...which Michelle Obama never claimed. Her speech refers to her father being a worker for the city's water department (presumably a pretty good middle-class Union job), but then having to put two kids through Yale. It also refers to Barack's grandmother working in a bank and getting promoted several times, (again, a presumably pretty good middle-class lifestyle), but then had to put her grandson through Harvard.

In TFA's world, claiming that a middle-class family struggled to pay for their kids' tuition for Ivy League schools is falsely claiming you grew up poor.

In TFA's world, going to a free magnet school and then taking out student loans for your kids is evidence you're actually rich.

So stop talking shiat about how poor you were growing up. It's not convincing anybody. It only reminds us that you rich people believe ordinary people, if we weren't stupid and gullible, would be rich too. It isn't so. The log cabin story hasn't worked since Abe Lincoln.

This piece is a weak effort at 'retaliation' because Anne Romney's poor attempt to make their early years seem lean and uncertain went over like a lead balloon. Or in the case of the Romney's, a gold balloon.

But it's nice to see Romney is sharing the logs in eye with his wife. That's special..

Both Obamas had good educations and were from hard-working middle class families that grew wealthier over time so that they were able to afford upper level education. Having access to a good education and enough money to afford higher education is why they were successful.

That's kind of the f*cking point. The middle class is being destroyed by the rich. A strong middle class is essential for continued wealth in this country. How does anyone not understand that?

I wouldn't call either of the Obamas rich. They were from middle class families that worked hard and as a result had successful careers. I come from that background, my dad had a lot of children, we were by no means rich, but he became very successful and was able to afford to put all of his kids through college AND give us a choice of where to go (most of us borrowed thousands in student loans but he helped a LOT). I attribute much of my success to my parents, I am incredibly grateful to my family for that, even if both of my parents are voting for Romney in November. :)

I went to a private school (a year's tuition there was more than a year of in-state tuition at UMD). I'm pretty sure that my parents' combined income during that time was under $150k (and since my mom was out of work for a year or two, likely under $100k).

It also doesn't account for the fact that there are many people who find ways to afford tuition at a school (high or college) but are left searching for other ways of eating, sleeping and reading during those years.

If only Obama had sold some stock, he would have been able to fix his car and get better shoes.

Yeah. I don't watch her much either. I thought her decision to start OWN was really poorly timed and thought out. She should have done it 10 years earlier and she should have included her own show from the get go. Instead she decided to add/replace another channel in an already saturated market.

We know enough about Obama's upbringing to know that the "grew up rich" claim is bullshiat, but let's look at Michelle:

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was born on January 17, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois, to Fraser Robinson III, a city water plant employee and Democratic precinct captain, and Marian (née Shields), a secretary at Spiegel's catalog store...Her mother was a full-time homemaker until Michelle entered high school.

Sounds like they were rolling in cash. Those big "city employee" and "secretary" bucks. And full-time homemakers are rich - just ask Ann Romney.

I love this whole rich vs. poor argument, and its sheer absurdity. Nearly everyone in the upper echelons of politics are rich. From state government and up. Hell, even a lot of people in LOCAL government are richer than the average citizen. It takes money to even run winning campaigns for things like the local school board. I personally know someone who spent almost $50,000 running for school board of a county with about 150,000 people (she won, and her husband is a doctor.)

It's cute that the people love to posture politicians as being "for the common man" or "against the common man" based on their party. Although there are exceptions, virtually everyone in congress was wealthy before they won their position, and on top of that, many of them come from dynasties who have been in government for decades or longer.

If you think any of these millionaires are going to go out of their way to lose money by passing laws that would negatively affect them, you're an idiot. The most you'll ever get is the token law here and there that sounds great on the surface but ultimately doesn't affect them.

Some of those people did wind up going to elite schools and earning a great living. Some didn't. There is nothing "unconservative" about looking at 2 people who grew up with the same story many did who managed to do big things. In fact, that is SUPPOSED to be what conservatism is about. That is building a better life for your kids and taking pride in their accomplishments looks like. That's the American farking dream, you homely dickheads.

bdub77: I wouldn't call either of the Obamas rich. They were from middle class families that worked hard and as a result had successful careers.

He was referring to when they were growing up.

There's no question that the Obamas are quite wealthy now, and they'll only be getting richer after he ends his second term and either enters the speaking circuit (doubtful - at least the for-profit speaking circuit) or writes another best seller about his presidency. He mentions it in his speeches on tax policy, including himself in the percentage of those who should have their tax rate raised.

Personally, I hope he creates a social justice and charitable foundation, like Clinton and Bush did. (Bush quite less so)

2012-09-06 01:09:04 PM

Need money to start a business or go to college? Why can't you just ask you dad for it, like I did?

Mitt and Ann going to school and living off of sales of stocks that Mitt's dad bought for him is white-person-poor.

Barack and Michelle going to school by student loan and scholarships is black-person rich.

Back in the 90s I was student manager for the men's basketball team at a fairly prominent D1 college program (mid-major with some national titles). One of the players went to Whitney Young- he pulled a double major in engineering and music (you may laugh at that one, but he had a hell of a voice and even sang the anthem before a couple of our games). she pretty clearly describes a middle class life growing up. After they got together, I don't doubt they had money issues early on.

When I was born my dad was a cop and drove a VW Beatle that literally had a hole in the floorboards where you could see the ground, as MO described. He just got back from dropping my little bro off at a $120,000 a year special needs boarding school in CT. My FIL just told me a story recently about how he and my MIL had to dig through the trash to find a pre-approval for a $10k loan so they could afford a down payment on a house when he was in law school because his parents didn't have the $ to lend them. He makes a little under $1,000,000 a year now.

Just because it didn't happen to you doesn't mean it didn't happen to anyone. Why do you begrudge people the fruit of their labor?

The interest, people! They couldn't touch the principal!

Oh, the humanity!

Look, here's the fact. Obama's campaign is exaggerating the humility of his origins in an effort to bestow "common man" appeal on him as contrast with Mitt Romney. This is purely an attempt to deceive voters - Obama did not come from particularly humble origins, even if he also didn't come from Romney-level money.

I'm not taking a position on whether coming from money is good or bad, or whether we should aspire to finding "common man" leaders, or any of that. But it pains the hell out of me to see Democrats willingly drinking the kool-aid, apologizing for deceptive campaigning merely because the person doing it is on "their team", and focusing on bullshiat "character" issues instead of focusing on candidates' policy platforms.

NPR was interviewing people at the American Legion Convention & they interviewed some old lady who was going on about how she couldn't wait to get rid of Michelle Obama so they could have someone who "looks like a first lady" in.

they're not saying they were poor.

Michelle did - she alluded to it by saying how "she and her husband understand what it is to struggle to make ends meet." She spoke of their early years--about how a young Barry drove a car that was "rusted out" and found his furniture "in a dumpster," how they both came from families that had to "scrape by." BS! But the only lie a Democrat will ever recognize is when it is said by a Republican.

There are millions of Americans who are struggling to make ends meet that do not consider themselves poor. I am one of them. You are being disingenuous.

Well, lessee....

I grew up at about the same time as Barack Obama--he's three years older than I am--in a similar small town in California. Small resort towns are great for the touristi, bad for the regular residents, because the economy fluctuates so wildly from year to year. We didn't lack for the necessities, but my family struggled, since my mom was a teacher and my dad chronically unemployed at a time when the safety net for people like us was much smaller. After their divorce, my mom worked two jobs to keep me and my sisters fed and clothed.

But we weren't "poor" by any stretch of the imagination--we always had clothes and food and transportation and only had the lights cut off once. Poor, to us, were the migrant workers out in Salinas. We were middle-class, maybe lower on the spectrum. So when Michelle Obama says she understands what it's like to have to struggle to make ends meet, I can easily believe it; much more so than when ol' Mittens says he understands the plight of the working man.

And the elected republicans and the punditry might not even be so blatantly racist but they gotta attack every last little program or event she is involved in like she is doing something extremely partisan by trying to get kids to eat healthy or whatever. I've never seen a first lady's feel good programs attacked like that by people at that level of political notoriety.

It pains me to see holier than thou democrats/liberals trying to shame other people with their same political beliefs into not using an effective tool to move an agenda or push a narrative. Some people need these kinds of more simplistic contrasts or even hyperbolic verbiage to help convince them of something. if democrats refuse to court that voting bloc in the name of taking the high road all you'll have is feeling good about yourselves while the right wing steamrolls your ass and takes their agenda to the house...the executive... and the judicial...

Subby has an interesting interpretation of what "rich" means. Both the Obamas grew up middle class. But they're also black. So I guess any black person who isn't living on food stamps in the ghetto has to be considered "rich."

My next door neighbor is a lawyer (LLD, Tulane), drives a Lexus, and is very, very black. He has no "black" accent, wears good suits, and send his three daughters to an academically very demanding private school. But he's obviously racist since he made a sizable donation to the Obama campaign in 2008.

Dude, do you hear yourself? This is word parsing at its worst! Conservative claims do not revolve around the President or First Lady's use of the word "poor" specifically... that's a red herring. The issue is that Obama's campaign is playing up his "common man from humble origins" credentials when the fact of the matter is that Obama is not a common man and does not have particularly humble origins. Conservative complaints about this are essentially valid, whether or not they are also hypocritical. Obama should be honest with voters about his fairly privileged and lucky background.

I will - I believe Obamacare will hurt the middle class very hard by raising tax on manufacturers and importers of pharmaceuticals, and that tax will be passed on to consumers, most of whom are middle class taxpayers. I disagree with his foreign policy and I believe we need to use more of our own natural resources instead of relying on other countries.

you have to go for something more unexpected. Maybe how you got into Colgate, but didn't go there because you wanted a campus near the ocean...so you enrolled at Aqua Fresh instead.

The most creative I've heard was from high school friend after I got accepted.

"Colgate? What degree are you going to get? Your MFP?"

Why does the DEM party, who should be reaching out to Independents and not their base, try to portray the Obamas as poor? I would never care if they were poor, rich, middle class or whatever. Its a puzzling narrative besides the fact that its untrue.

If you had to count on scholarships and student loans to pay for school, you weren't privileged.

This is what I find so amusing... for all this accusing Mitt Romney of having a background that disconnects him from the realities of the common man, you guys are just as disconnected! You think relying on scholarships and student loans makes you underprivileged?

I want you to go listen to a song for me.

Not sure why you're amused. She detailed in her speech how rough her and Barry had it in their lives. Its a snow job so they can slather Romney with the "rich and disconnected" juice. Her speech was all over the place in rhetoric-If her and her husband overcame so much and made it, then her narrative of the country not being a place of equality holds no water.

According to Michelle herself:
...she alluded to it by saying how "she and her husband understand what it is to struggle to make ends meet." She spoke of their early years--about how a young Barry drove a car that was "rusted out" and found his furniture "in a dumpster," how they both came from families that had to "scrape by."

You sound rich and disconnected.

Is it so incomprehensible to people that you can have difficulty managing and then later your situation can reverse itself and you can have money? Is it that "once poor always poor" and therefore if you become wealthy later you must never have been less-wealthy? Is it that only the rich can become rich(er) and the poor must remain poor? So that Michelle's account of their early years is a lie? I'm not even sure what the right-wing narrative is on this one.

The farking article is merely a run-down of various media and pundit reactions to Michelle Obama's speech. That's it. Why shouldn't they quote the Onion while they're at it?

Damn, you people are stupid. It's really amazing how stupid you are.

When Obama went to Harvard he had a mini-refrigerator in his dorm room. To keep his dog steaks cool!

Obama went by the name Barry Soetoro during his time in Indonesia....Soetoro translates to "the spear that was thrust into the side of Jesus". Hmmm....that sounds just about right - I mean left.

These are starting to sound like Bill Brasky anecdotes.

As a child, Obama once used the scrotum of an antelope to parachute off the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro.

Or by being well connected. Not that I'm implying that's how she got in, but their list of alumni is typically is more notable for who their parents are than for their own accomplishments.

So are you saying that her family is well connected?

No, that's why I specifically said I wasn't implying that's how she got in. Jesse Jackson and Michael Jordan's kids? Probably.

Not for everyone. My daughter got in [and did quite well there] because she busted her butt to do so in sixth through eighth grade. And her mother and I are neither wealthy nor famous. In fact most of the Whitney parents I met were just plain solid folks who were a mix of working class, middle class, and upper middle class. The common denominator was kids with goals.

You're accusing me of pedantism while ignoring the gist of my argument to raise a semantic issue that doesn't even make sense? That's not very high quality commentary. Another way of saying that one lacks privilege would be to say, "they are unprivileged". The effect of my choice of the term "underprivileged" was to moderate your own point.

We're waiting.

Considering his father died in 1982 in a car crash and his mother died in 1995 of cancer, it may be a little difficult to find a tax return they filed in the past ten years.

Are you saying there isn't a powerful strain of southern white redneck mentality present in the frothing, mindless hatred of Barack Obama? This isn't just a fringe element, it's a significant part part of the right wing voting block, and the fact that none of the GOP candidates have made any effort to distancae themselves from the clearly racist vitriol that these degenerate inbreeds are spewing is the most disturbing aspect of American politics in the last couple years.

Your point seems to be that they were privileged and that conservatives complaints are valid. I would not refer to anyone who has to pay their own way through college as privileged and would wager that a sizable majority would agree with me. Conservatives are claiming Michelle lied about something. I have yet to see any reasonable argument that she did. By paying for their education in the way that 10s of millions of 'regular' Americans do, they do have some 'common man' credentials. I'm sorry if it bothers you that they are 'playing it up', but it is a political campaign and drawing contrasts with your opponent is a basic strategy. You have devolved into saying things like " not particularly humble origins" or "fairly privileged". You began the game of semantics trying to defend the idea that conservatives have a valid point that Michelle Obama lied about something. They don't.

Is anything she said untrue?

How is "scraping by" the same thing as "poor"?

I "scraped by" for more than a few years, living paycheck-to-paycheck, skipping any indulgences, nothing left in the bank at the end of the month, but I wasn't "poor", by any stretch. I could pay my rent, feed myself, have an occasional beer. Didn't have cable TV, didn't have a car. Got by fine with broadcast and public transport.

Are definitions and concepts really this hard for you, or are you just faking it, as usual?

Personally, Im pointing out that her story is false and misleading-Im sure they both had their ups and downs like most people, but to advance a platform that Romney is out of touch, someone is deeming it necessary to embellish the "struggle' that these two experienced. The fact is they both went to prep high schools and Ivy league colleges-Barack grew up in Hawaii for Gods Sake. No one can deny that The Prez and first lady lead very different lives than the rest of us. The whole narrative is completely unnecessary.
Should people not vote for Romney simply because he is rich? A rich family guy who doesnt need this scrutiny seems idealistic to me-a positive trait. I can understand independents hammering his policies as Gov and his plan for the future, but I cant get on board to the falseness of the Dem attacks and the fake stories of struggle from Michele Obama. I'll take their struggle any day.

I went to a prestigious magnet school (Hume Fogg), I also went to "the Harvard of the south" (Vanderbilt). My mother was a SSG during my H.S. days and a SFC in the army during my college years. Are you saying because I went to a good prep school and a well regarded private university that somehow the pay of an E-7 in the army is now "upper middle class"? Can you take a minute and review http://www.militaryfactory.com/military_pay_scale.asp and tell us all how 40-50k a year makes someone upper middle class? Honestly, let that bitterness flow through you. I know it's a completely foreign concept for people like you that just aren't that capable, but sometimes people are able to succeed on merit alone. Imagine, if you will, a world where you don't need mommy and daddy to buy your way to success. I know, as fantastical as rainbow-farting unicorns.
