As one of the most vocal here against BBC America for their presentation of Doctor Who last season, I have to say that they did a better job this season with the first episode.

No add-ons, only three commercial breaks, the first stretch of show was nearly 20 uninterrupted minutes... BBCA is getting better. Now, if only they would just air the damn show without commercials like BBC 1 does, they would be perfect.

/1.5 million viewers for the episode... sounds like a decent enough number. UK Numbers (the ones that count) put the episode on par with past seasons.

How many more episodes will we be watching Amy and Rory repair their relationship or prove to each other how much they love each other?

I'm getting really f*cking sick of the Amy and Rory marriage counseling.

And isn't the Doctor supposed to be dead as far as anyone in the universe knows? How did the Daleks know how to get in touch with him?

1) Amy Pond treats Rory like shiat alot, even when she's trying to be nice. Rory is too naive/devoted to realize this. They will always have problems because Amy will never be truthful upfront and Rory will never fail to assume she's truthful.

2) Time travel, for one. It's possible the Daleks can detect the Doctor and send him a message, as they have similar time travel capabilities. Two, they might be unaware of what time period the Doctor comes from. The Doctor dies, and the Daleks know when, but when he has a magic police box, the Daleks could just as easily assume it's the Doctor from earlier in his own timeline, and not dead yet.

I hope to god that when the new Companion takes over, they start the show with this:

"My name is Clara. I was a Dalek, but then a man with a chin found me. He lives in a box that's bigger on the inside. I ran away with him, and now we travel the universe narrating our adventures for no other reason than to piss off Farkers who need something to biatch about."

2012-09-05 06:33:31 PM
Yea, Amy Pond is getting kind of annoying. Sure, guarding her inside a box for 2000 years is nothing compared to getting all emo, kicking rory out, and then convincing herself it was for his good and not her just being a biatch. Right.

ActionJoe: My biggest question about the episode....how did the Doctor get to Skaro? I thought Galifrey and Skaro were both time locked and destroyed?

Skaro was devastated but not destroyed per se nor timelocked like Galifrey. The prequel shows the Dalek messengers getting into his head and summoning him with illusions.

TheManofPA: Maybe this season's swerve is they'll kill a major person in the Christmas episode and the new companion is Adric 2.0

From what Karen Gillan has indicated between the lines in interviews, Amy's departure in the episode before the Christmas episode will be by getting killed off, with maybe the possibly of an escape hatch or not entirely dead or something. Whether that means that she will be presumably dead but we don't see the body, or if it means getting uploaded like her daughter, I don't know. I haven't heard shiat about how Rory will leave other than that it will be in that same episode and that River will also appear in that one.

I have lingering questions about what River said at the end of "Flesh and Stone" just before going to pop by her parents' garden at the end of "The Wedding of River Song" (her perspective). Although the Doctor is enquiring about her prison sentence, it is not clear that River is talking about her sentence and her fake murder of the Doctor: Doctor: "Octavian said you killed a man." River: "Yes, I did." Doctor: "A good man?" River: "A very good man; the best man I've ever known." There was a lot of ambiguity in "A Good Man Goes to War" as to whether the title referred to the Doctor or to Rory. Hummm, will River kill her dad in a few weeks?

The Amy intro would have been fine before the cold open, just like Jack's and Clyde's comparable monologues at the starts of Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures. It would have served a purpose there, explaining the rather high-concept and non-intuitive premise of the story to the neophyte viewer (and remember, BBCA and Moffat were very aggressively trying to get beyond being a cult show in the U.S. last year). Putting it between the cold open and the opening credits negated its usefulness, and it horribly broke up the show's rhythm. The cold open ends on an exciting or suspenseful high note, and rolls into the rousing, high-paced, exciting credits sequence & music. Putting a quiet, gentle narration about Amelia and her imaginary friend in the middle of that was horribly stupid.

It was like having a Law & Order type monotone statement ("In the criminal justice system...") stuck in between David Caruso's sunglasses one-liner and the "Yeaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!"

It's amazing how times have changed.

The script of "An Unearthly Child" was tweaked to make Susan the Doctor's grand-daughter, lest there be concerns about hanky-panky between a geezer and a moist, tender, young teen girl, so petite and so ripe for use. Even the Fifth Doctor could only show physical affection (arm-over the shoulder, congratulatory hand-shaking and the like) with Adric, not with the ladies. All mentions of the sexual component in Ace's & Glitz's relationship were excised from the Dragonfire script, and she could only hint obliquely at not being a virgin in Curse of Fenric.

Now, however, there's Jack swapping spit with men in "The Doctor Dances". Amy tries to rape the Doctor in "Flesh and Stone" and "Meanwhile in the TARDIS 2". Amy and River are fairly blunt in discussing their marital relationships. And not only is there little or no controversy with a submissive, beastial lesbian character, but she and her mistress are seen as strong female role models and the public clamour for a spin-off.

BBC in the UK has the licence fee ($230 a year) hence no adverts. But they are not allowed to use that money to support broadcasts overseas, such as BBCA. Hence BBCA needs adverts.

/The other BBCA complaint, that they don't have lots of BBC shows, is because 25-50% of BBC shows are made by independent production companies, shows like Sherlock, Merlin, Spooks, Life On Mars etc. So BBCA would have to buy those US rights on the open market and the production companies will have either asked for too much money or sold the rights to someone else.

Not again.

Most of the multi-episode companions since Mel Bush have had 'mobius' relationships with the Doctor (Mel, Rose, Mickey, Jack/FoB, Sarah Jane, Martha, River, and Amy -- plus non-companions Jackie, Elizabeth I, and Sally. The only multi-episode companions since Mel who have met the Doctor at the same time as he met the companion have been Ace, Adam, Donna, Wilfred, and Craig.

Finally watched it yesterday on Itunes. Yes, I know the Daleks being able to openly weep goes all the way back to their '63 debut, but "Why do they hate you so much?" just sounded goofy. Only argument.

Anyways, feel free to scream "HELL NO," but with more ape-like qualities (even if they remain bipedal), a lower albeit hidden jaw, better biological reaction traits, and better story direction for the themes they represent, the Mandrels would be cool to see again for the 50th or the season after.

I think it was added with BBCA's airing of "The Impossible Astronaut". By that point, I was acquiring HD, commercial free, uncut BBC versions of the show a few hours before BBCA broadcast, and just retaining the DVR subscription to the BBCA airings to do my bit for the ratings. It was kept up through "The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe". So throughout 2011, but only 2011.

They could do that now that Ten has left. Since he dumped her right after she made that episode and started dating Five's daughter. And no need to retcon it, she could travel with him for a year, be dropped back five minutes after she left with him saying "I'll be back" but not returning, hence the letter she wrote.

Holly FARK, I just noticed something.

Oswin or "Clara" or whatever the Coleman's character will be called will be the companion during the 50th anniversary. The writers and producers have occasionally revisited that fateful day, and/or the preceding day. Remembrance of the Daleks took place on 22-23 November 1963. The Ninth Doctor was shown in one of the photos in "Rose" to have been present at Dallas to watch Kennedy's assassination on 22 November 1963. The K-9 episode, "The Cambridge Spy" featured time travel back to 23 November 1963.

What's Oswin's surname?
