12th grade level should be the minimum. That was a hell of a speech.

I didn't see the speech. I didn't see Mrs. Romney's speech.

But this kind of analysis is the shiat I can't stand.

Well, Ann's was still a bit above her audience, but good for her for aiming high.

You always talk TO your audience, not DOWN TO your audience. Romney knew what she was doing.

That's about what I'd expect. People at and watching the RNC can't process the English language beyond a certain threshold, so if Ann went up there and started speechifying, a whole mess o' folks would turn off their magic talking picture boxes and go back to shucking corn or whatever it is they do when there's no Klan meeting that night.

Meh. Doesn't make much difference to me, though I preferred Michelle's. Many speeches are written at a fairly low level, for fairly obvious reasons.

You really should watch it. It's a great example of effective public speaking. If, as I've heard, she wrote it mostly herself then it's very impressive.

I don't need to hear other people give speeches for that. I can just use math and science, and they usually can't.

It does say something about what they expect our intelligence level to be. The Democrats are trying to win us over by explaining things to us. The Republicans just lie to us with impunity because they presume that we are idiots.

Well, just look at their philosophies on how humanity was created.

Democrats/Liberals generally think that we evolved over time, however we can't be 100% sure but that's the conclusion the best scientific evidence we have leads to

Republicans/conservatives believe God did it. Everything. 6000 years ago. And that's that.

It had to be easier for Ann Romney to deliver her speech. She just had to think "I'll talk to them like I talk to my staff. I just need to be extra careful to not shriek 'No spots on the good silver or it's Yo Quiero Deportation-o!'"

Frankly, if you can't understand a speech given at a 12th grade level, I don't want you in my national politics.

It is kind of a made up metric. There have been a lot of good/powerful/motivational speeches using short words and simple sentences. The best have a good mix, with a lot of shorter sentences toward the end, for emphasis. The biggest key is the delivery and in my opinion Michelle had the better delivery of the two speeches.

I am reminded of the Lotus Sutra....from wiki

Upaya (Sanskrit: upāya, literally "Expedient Means" or "pedagogy") is a term in Mahayana Buddhism...often used with "kaushalya.' Upaya-kaushalya is a concept which emphasizes that practitioners may use their own specific methods or techniques that fit the situation in order to gain Enlightenment. The implication is that even if a technique, view, etc., is not ultimately "true" in the highest sense, it may still be an expedient practice to perform or view to hold; i.e., it may bring the practitioner closer to true realization anyway.

Agreed. Various metrics don't necessarily agree even among themselves on the "grade level" of a given piece of writing anyway. I don't think its a valuable tool.

I've noticed this too, but just let it slide. He'll be shortly posting about his 1 black co-worker/friend to prove he's not racist, or simply call us racist for insisting he is racist.

Or calling you racist for assuming that only black people live in cities?

But yeah, I would have just gone for public schools vs. private schools. Maybe also throw in some subtle snark about the Republicans being the ones who wrecked said public schools.

The Obamas speak to us as intelligent adults, not a bunch of immature children.

I can see why some people don't care for that I guess.
