(The Daily Dolt)   The Democrats remove the word "God" from their official platform. Conservatives react with nuance and tolerance. Just kidding, they're already saying the heathen Dems are waging a "War on God"   (thedailydolt.com) divider line 37

The War on God started when Dems fought for equal rights for women, gays, and minorities. God seems to hate those people.

Big tent Dems, bring em all in under the big tent.

Just because "God" isn't in their platform, maybe a Jewish person wrote G-d. Or they wanted to be open to Muslims. Or pagans. Or Wiccans. Or his noodley appendages might bless everyone.

OR maybe we are just ok with who we are and where we are going that we don't need to invoke the name, just follow some good practices of treating everyone nicely. (which is what Jesus said, anyway)

Mugato: jst3p: Mugato: Sure, referencing God in political speeches is silly (WTF does "God Bless America" even mean?) but people love it and right before the election isn't the time or place to stir that shiat up.

I am not religious but you have to be intentionally thick to claim to not understand what "God Bless America" means.

Sorry, I really don't.

It's not what it means, it's what's implied by its absence. It's like the flag lapel pin. Failure to have either in a speech means you're an America-hating godless commie.

Sorry, I really don't. I guess if you hear a phrase so many times you don't bother to actually stop and think what the words mean but really, what does it mean? God, bless this chuck of geography? God bless the American way of life and fark everyone else, especially those who don't worship you? We're your favorite, right God? And why are we telling God what to do anyway? It's meaningless American exceptionalist bullshiat and our leaders shouldn't be parroting it like farking drones.

But 2 months before the election is not the time for this.

God has no business being part of a party's platform. A party's platform is supposed to be for all people, including those who don't believe in God.

I'm an atheist, and I don't care if every speaker ends their remarks with "God Bless America". That's different than saying the party wants to advance a Christofascist regime on the country, should they get elected.

I do hate the Democrats I've seen on TV trying to explain it as if it were a mistake "no, no, we're god-fearing, too!"

It would be better if it was embraced as inclusive move that was reflective of the American freedom of religion.

"Take heed that you do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. For then you will have your reward from your Father in heaven, and a tax deduction here on Earth. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, sound a trumpet before you in the megachurches and in the streets, that you may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, claim your just reward. And when you do a charitable deed, let your left hand prepare a press release as the right hand gives forth the donation, that your charitable deed may be well publicized; and your Father who sees will Himself reward you openly, according to the Prosperity Gospel.

"And when you pray, you shall not be like the moderates or liberals. For they love to pray in their rooms, after shutting their doors, praying as though God is in a secret place and as though public displays of self-righteousness were vainglorious and vulgar. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, do it standing in the megachurches and on the corners of the streets, that you may be seen by men. And your Father who loves good PR will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. In this God-approved repetitious manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
On earth by the GOP.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we monetize our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from liberalism.
For the GOP is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.
Amen.

"For if you rebuke the liberals for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will forgive you. But if you do not relentlessly attack the libtards and everything they stand for, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."

Didnt they end the night on a prayer?

Pretty sure every speaker said "God bless America" or some such, and yes they did end with a benediction.

It's almost as if they view worship as a personal matter, that the majority of them proudly and happily embrace, but that the party doesn't see fit to foist on anyone through their platform or through their governing.

How terrible.

Or it could be that god has no business being a part of a political platform. I don't begrudge anyone their beliefs, but do not make your beliefs an official postion of the US, we are not a Christian nation, nor a Muslim or Jewish nation. We are a secular nation and I absolutely despise that our national motto is "In God we trust", especially when people bring up the founding fathers as a part of their influence for how we should run the country because I am pretty sure they chose "E Pluribus Unum" which translates to "Out of many, one" which is not only a more fitting motto, but is exactly what many at the DNC were driving home, that Democrat or Republican, old or young, male or female, black, white or brown, we are one nation, one people, of many backgrounds and we all deserve the opportunity to succeed in life.

Also the last few words of Michelle Obama's speech: "God Bless the US".

x23: imontheinternet: Christians are just shy of 80% of the population

pretty sure in most (non-self-reporting) polls i've seen it is 75-80% that "believe in god" ... not "are Christians".

i see Christians *claim* that automatically means 80% are Christians but i am pretty sure that isn't the case.

I don't give a rat's behind if America is 98% self-identified Christian. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; ..." means a more than "you have the freedom to be a Christian. It means that America belongs equally to those citizens who are Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, agnostic, atheist, and so on.Don't expect others to participate in your dream of theocracy.

Oprah's a self-made woman who came from dirt-poor origins and being raped into pregnancy as a pre-teen, into being a titled beauty queen, college graduate and billionaire media mogul. Don't ever dis Oprah by associating her with Stepford Romney.

The following words do not appear in the document:

God, Buddhism, Islam, Hindu, Shiva, Vishnu, Adonai, HaShem, Zeus.

The word Islam appears 3 times in the RNC's 2012 platform. Therefore, the RNC must be more favorable to the interests of Muslims, right?

Interestingly the word Israel appears 15 times. Contrast this to the RNC 2012 Platform, where the word Israel only appears 11 times. So this must mean the Democratic Party cares more about Israel, right?

Son, maybe I need you to reinforce the message. Tell them not to be so in-your-face. If people want the truth, if they're ready for it, they'll come to it. Being pushy about it will only make people resent the message and the messenger."

Exactly.

Um, isn't that a sin?
Nonsense, boy, we're the Republican Party. We're above sin.
