Big tent Dems, bring em all in under the big tent.

Just because "God" isn't in their platform, maybe a Jewish person wrote G-d. Or they wanted to be open to Muslims. Or pagans. Or Wiccans. Or his noodley appendages might bless everyone.

OR maybe we are just ok with who we are and where we are going that we don't need to invoke the name, just follow some good practices of treating everyone nicely. (which is what Jesus said, anyway)

If there is a God, it is hard to imagine him giving a fark about either the Republicans or the Democrats.

Considering that He would have the whole universe to play with as sort of the ultimate model railroad layout, would He really bother with Jimmy Carter and Clint Eastwood?

OTOH, that hurricane idea was the sort of thing I would do if I were God.

Are the Dems showing the atheists in their ranks some love here or are they simply trolling the GOP into another ill fated fauxrage campaign in which they once again look like the boy-who-cried-wolf's retarded brother?

Both?

Nonsense, the Democrats aren't Klingons.

2012-09-05 07:52:56 AM
I'm of the opinion all of those dumbocrat commies really need to get their shiat together because I noticed a lot of last night's speakers mentioned God, as in "God bless America."

This is awesome! "Rile 'em up, and let the Far Right expose their general horribleness to the rest of the country, then rince and repeat as necessary". That is masterful work on the part of the Dems.

Sure, referencing God in political speeches is silly (WTF does "God Bless America" even mean?) but people love it and right before the election isn't the time or place to stir that shiat up.

Anyway, all I know is I want to smack the smarmy douche who wrote TFA. He sounds like a real twat with an over-inflated sense of how funny he is.

This. Although if he were going to give a fark about either of them, I would be inclined to think he'd be PO'ed at the GOP for using him for political advantage.

I also noticed a lot of 'God Bless America' last night at the DNC. Also, a lot of 'we are the greatest nation on EARTH!' I'd make a HORRIBLE politician. I'm a borderline Atheist (See "Agnostic"), so I'd refuse to say that 'god bless' crap, and, although I think the U.S. is still one of the best nations on Earth, it is still only ONE of the best nations on Earth. I don't buy into this 'American Exceptionalism' BS.

"We need a government that stands up for the hopes, values, and interests of working people, and gives everyone willing to work hard the chance to make the most of their God-given potential."

to

"We gather to reclaim the basic bargain that built the largest middle class and the most prosperous nation on Earth - the simple principle that in America, hard work should pay off, responsibility should be rewarded, and each one of us should be able to go as far as our talent and drive take us."

Didnt they end the night on a prayer?

I can understand *why* the Dems would do that, but jesus, that's just one other way to turn off the middle ground. It's like both the GOP and the Dems are finding ways to alienate middle America.

If there is a God, I'm pretty sure any war us petty humans can come up with will still fall just a liiiittle bit short of being successful. So if they really had conviction and wanted to see the left crumble, they'd encourage such a 'War on God' to see the smiting happen.

/I guess they are more realistic than they want to admit.

Mitt Romney failed to mention Afghanistan in his acceptance speech last night. Are Republicans waging a war on Afghanistan?

(reads the before and after versions) I like the new version better.

And if the Republicans actually believed in God, they wouldn't spend every waking hour lying their asses off.

They don't have to promote it. Just can't deny the right to practice religion. This is an overwhelming "so farking what".

Or it could be that god has no business being a part of a political platform. I don't begrudge anyone their beliefs, but do not make your beliefs an official postion of the US, we are not a Christian nation, nor a Muslim or Jewish nation. We are a secular nation and I absolutely despise that our national motto is "In God we trust", especially when people bring up the founding fathers as a part of their influence for how we should run the country because I am pretty sure they chose "E Pluribus Unum" which translates to "Out of many, one" which is not only a more fitting motto, but is exactly what many at the DNC were driving home, that Democrat or Republican, old or young, male or female, black, white or brown, we are one nation, one people, of many backgrounds and we all deserve the opportunity to succeed in life.

Also the last few words of Michelle Obama's speech: "God Bless the US".

NateGrey: Pretty sure I heard "God Bless America" a few times.

Pretty sure every speaker said "God bless America" or some such, and yes they did end with a benediction.

It's almost as if they view worship as a personal matter, that the majority of them proudly and happily embrace, but that the party doesn't see fit to foist on anyone through their platform or through their governing.

How terrible.

I don't disagree. However, the vast majority of people in this country, right or wrong, self-identify as Christian, or at least believing in some higher power. I'd LIKE to think that the more moderate people would look past this kind of thing, but...well, a person is smart, but PEOPLE are dumb.

2012-09-05 08:52:16 AM
Oh my name it is nothin'
My age it means less
The country I come from
Is called the Midwest
I's taught and brought up there
The laws to abide
And the land that I live in
Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it
They tell it so well
The cavalries charged
The Indians fell
The cavalries charged
The Indians died
Oh the country was young
With God on its side.

The Spanish-American
War had its day
And the Civil War too
Was soon laid away
And the names of the heroes
I's made to memorize
With guns on their hands
And God on their side.

The First World War, boys
It came and it went
The reason for fighting
I never did get
But I learned to accept it
Accept it with pride
For you don't count the dead
When God's on your side.

When the Second World War
Came to an end
We forgave the Germans
And then we were friends
Though they murdered six million
In the ovens they fried
The Germans now too
Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians
All through my whole life
If another war comes
It's them we must fight
To hate them and fear them
To run and to hide
And accept it all bravely
With God on my side.

But now we got weapons
Of the chemical dust
If fire them we're forced to
Then fire them we must
One push of the button
And a shot the world wide
And you never ask questions
When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour
I've been thinkin' about this
That Jesus Christ
Was betrayed by a kiss
But I can't think for you
You'll have to decide
Whether Judas Iscariot
Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'
I'm weary as Hell
The confusion I'm feelin'
Ain't no tongue can tell
The words fill my head
And fall to the floor
If God's on our side
He'll stop the next war.

"Take heed that you do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. For then you will have your reward from your Father in heaven, and a tax deduction here on Earth. Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, sound a trumpet before you in the megachurches and in the streets, that you may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, claim your just reward. And when you do a charitable deed, let your left hand prepare a press release as the right hand gives forth the donation, that your charitable deed may be well publicized; and your Father who sees will Himself reward you openly, according to the Prosperity Gospel.

"And when you pray, you shall not be like the moderates or liberals. For they love to pray in their rooms, after shutting their doors, praying as though God is in a secret place and as though public displays of self-righteousness were vainglorious and vulgar. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, do it standing in the megachurches and on the corners of the streets, that you may be seen by men. And your Father who loves good PR will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. In this God-approved repetitious manner, therefore, pray:

Our Father who art in Heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
On earth by the GOP.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
As we monetize our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from liberalism.
For the GOP is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

I'm with you. Also seems odd to me that some people on the right seem to regard the US Flag like a religious icon. ( I remember that BS controversy from the late 80's)

If I were Christian, I would think holding symbols of the State in such regard would be akin to blasphemy.

/ not that it shouldn't be shown respect, just like anyone else's flag (eg. Union Jack, the Maple Leaf flag, the German Bundesflagge, ect, ect)

Exactly.
How can we use the lord God's hallowed name for our personal gain?
Um, isn't that a sin?
Nonsense, boy, we're the Republican Party. We're above sin.
I'm pretty sure it's on the list. In fact it's number 3. If there were only 5 commandments, that'd still be one of them.

Also from the platform:

Faith. Faith has always been a central part of the American story, and it has been a driving force of progress and justice throughout our history. We know that our nation, our communities, and our lives are made vastly stronger and richer by faith and the countless acts of justice and mercy it inspires. Faith- based organizations will always be critical allies in meeting the challenges that face our nation and our world-from domestic and global poverty, to climate change and human trafficking. People of faith and religious organizations do amazing work in communities across this country and the world, and we believe in lifting up and valuing that good work, and finding ways to support it where possible. We believe in constitutionally sound, evidence-based partnerships with faith-based and other non-profit organizations to serve those in need and advance our shared interests. There is no conflict between supporting faith-based institutions and respecting our Constitution, and a full commitment to both principles is essential for the continued flourishing of both faith and country.

The following words do not appear in the document:

God, Buddhism, Islam, Hindu, Shiva, Vishnu, Adonai, HaShem, Zeus.

The word Islam appears 3 times in the RNC's 2012 platform. Therefore, the RNC must be more favorable to the interests of Muslims, right?

Interestingly the word Israel appears 15 times. Contrast this to the RNC 2012 Platform, where the word Israel only appears 11 times. So this must mean the Democratic Party cares more about Israel, right?

God has no business being part of a party's platform. A party's platform is supposed to be for all people, including those who don't believe in God.

I'm an atheist, and I don't care if every speaker ends their remarks with "God Bless America". That's different than saying the party wants to advance a Christofascist regime on the country, should they get elected.

It is somewhat baffling. If the phrase were "God blesses America", it could be seen as an observation. "May God bless America" sounds like an expression of hope, or a plea for His protection or benevolence. "God bless America" sounds like a command. Who would be bold enough to command God?

pretty sure "God bless America" is a plea.

I've always been struck how a lot of prayer sounds more like orders than requests. The Lord's Prayer doesn't say "please forgive us our trespasses" or "would you be so kind as to not lead us into temptation" it pretty much orders it

And if I didn't pass it on, I would have all sorts of awful bad terrible things happen to me.
Now I don't really believe in all that mess, but this morning I broke my favorite coffee cup and then went out and found I had a flat tire on my pickup truck, and had to change it in the rain. So just to be on the safe side, I am passing it on.

The Democrats are just responding to changing demographics. Atheists and agnostics are the fastest growing segment of the populace. They are 12-15% of the population with a rapidly increasing percentage expected to reach around 20% by 2030 as most of the Boomers die off.

Serious Black: skullkrusher: Epoch_Zero: skullkrusher: Vegan Meat Popsicle: I don't know why the talibanicals are always so worried about atheists starting a "war on god". Even if I wanted to, I don't even know how to lead a war against someone's imagination.

that's probably not gonna happen

It's pretty fetch.

greenboy: Nina_Hartley's_Ass: I'm just going to attribute the mother lode of derp on Fark today as a panic response to the stunning success of the convention's opening night.

The right heard a big noise and now they're just sh*tt*ng all over the place.

And the fact that michelle obama gave a speech that was actually pretty impressive versus the fact that female romney took speech lessons from oprah. As first ladies go, obama did more to make her husband look good than female romney ever will.

Oprah's a self-made woman who came from dirt-poor origins and being raped into pregnancy as a pre-teen, into being a titled beauty queen, college graduate and billionaire media mogul. Don't ever dis Oprah by associating her with Stepford Romney.

I have no problem with this whatsoever. An agnostic party is a party I would join.

let's not go crazy here. the association was with the tones and intonations that romney used were imitations of oprah. Any comparison was for the purpose of showing that romney has never worked. she takes, buys, and steals the things she wants.

keylock71: Good.

Let the regressive, knuckle-dragging authoritarians throw a hissy fit.

Keep your god in church where he belongs.

True that. God is like your car. It helps you get where you want to go, but once you're there, you leave it parked outside or in your garage. You don't drive it to your desk, or your schoolroom, or wherever.

imontheinternet: Christians are just shy of 80% of the population

pretty sure in most (non-self-reporting) polls i've seen it is 75-80% that "believe in god" ... not "are Christians".

i see Christians *claim* that automatically means 80% are Christians but i am pretty sure that isn't the case.

I don't give a rat's behind if America is 98% self-identified Christian. "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; ..." means a more than "you have the freedom to be a Christian. It means that America belongs equally to those citizens who are Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, Sikh, agnostic, atheist, and so on.Don't expect others to participate in your dream of theocracy.

GhostFish: NateGrey: Pretty sure I heard "God Bless America" a few times.

Didnt they end the night on a prayer?

Pretty sure every speaker said "God bless America" or some such, and yes they did end with a benediction.

It's almost as if they view worship as a personal matter, that the majority of them proudly and happily embrace, but that the party doesn't see fit to foist on anyone through their platform or through their governing.

How terrible.

Well how very Christian of them.

No, really. Jesus actually said to pray in secret, and that those who pray in public and who make a show of their piety are hypocrites at best. Matthew chapter 6.

/Atheist
//I actually like the first half of Matt 6. You shouldn't make a big deal out of your piety (or lack thereof), or of your charity (especially if your charity is motivated by your piety {or lack thereof}).

Coco LaFemme: I'm an atheist, and I don't care if every speaker ends their remarks with "God Bless America". That's different than saying the party wants to advance a Christofascist regime on the country, should they get elected.

If every speaker did, that would seem to be getting into Ceterum censeo Carthaginem delendam esse territory.

You're confusing atheists/agnostics with Nothingarians -- the more general category of the religiously unaffiliated. Overall, atheists/agnostics combined make up about a quarter of the "None" category overall, and apparently have for a fair while. However, they currently seem (according to the Georgetown/PRRI study of Millennials) about 50% of the 18-25 "None" demographic. Thus, atheists/agnostics are growing at least proportionately to the "Nones", and possibly a LOT faster in the youngest cohorts.

And it didn't sound to me like the amendment passed with a 2/3 voice vote, but they put it back in anyway. Done deal.
