You need to recalibrate what 'utter failure' is. Presiding over the greatest economic collapse in just shy of a century is utter failure - which happened about 6 months before Obama was inaugurated and a year before the first budget he presided over.

The economic policies that led to that once in a century collapse were stewarded by no only a republican, but a group of individuals Romney has tapped to advise him.

That, I think, also qualifies for 'utter failure' status - far beyond the high-ish unemployment we face now that has a lot to do with biased tax incentives against hiring and austerity in public hiring.

Especially given that when he took over, the general consensus was that the sky is falling, capitalism was permanently discredited, and at any point the entire world economy was going to fall apart. So in four years he has gone from the verge of total economic description to people complaining that economic growth is too weak, so therefore we should consider voting for the "complete world economic destruction" party again.

CNN's coverage was really... weird last night. It was almost like they were trying too hard not to be seen as "librul" but came off more as a bad parody of Fox News. When one interviewee was talking about the importance of education and how the two candidates differ in this regard, the news blonde interrupted and said, "well the most important thing is the economy so how about that?" The questions their reporters asked were leading to the point of making the statement themselves. I finally broke down and flipped to MSNBC where Maddow and Hayes were doing actual policy wonk stuff and as long as Matthews didn't talk it was actually really good.

Vegas math is then just like real math? Gross and net are both real things, you know. Of course, we could just elect another Republican and have both a gross and net loss in jobs again.

/I'm pretty sure the issue here is in determining which metrics to use to determine these figures, and that they are all equally true.

Obama was handed an economy that was a gigantic pile of shiat. He and his policies have turned it into an OK economy. There is still more work to do. If he had started at any other point than -800k jobs/month, and had made as much progress as he had, he'd be running unopposed. It took George Bush 8 years to destroy this country's economy. Obama's gotten it back to positive in just over 3.

There is still more work to be done, and there are significant differences between the democrats and the republicans in the ideas on what needs to be done. The republicans want to implement many of the supply-side, trickle-down policies that do not work, and lead to the risky behavior that caused the crash in the first place. The democratic policies implemented by the President and the congress (when the republicans didn't hold a 41+ seat majority) helped. Once the republicans got 41 though, they have stood in the way. The economy is not where it is because of the republicans, the economy is where it is in spite of the republicans.

Are you really going to blame job losses that occurred in the first months of 2009, before Obama's stimulus went into effect, on Obama? Really?

There really isn't anything that misleading int he 4.5 million jobs claim if they are starting the count from when his policies could actually go into effect. It's actually MORE misleading to think shiat that happens on his first and second day in office in the economy is in anyway his fault.

It's funny/sad how much CNN has to stretch to get to the same level of mendacity of the RNC. All because they're afraid that Republicans will call them biased. No wonder nobody watches them anymore.

Let's see if I have this right:

Then, not only does Obama get the train stopped, he gets the train moving back UP the cliff, to the point where we are now on level ground and moving forward with increasing momentum.

And that's the criticism? That Obama had to pull the train back up the cliff before we could move forward as a country?

In comparison, the jobs lost under the Hoover administration (-6.4 million) were not regained during the Roosevelt's first term (+5.5 million). That gain consisted mostly of alphabet soup jobs - WPA and the like, which were reduced or eliminated as we transitioned into a wartime industrial footing (many military jobs, plus "private" manufacturing jobs that were 100% government-subsidized). It wasn't until the late 40s and early 50s that unsubsidized private sector job growth approached pre-Depression levels.

In sum, Obama has done in three years what took Roosevelt and Truman 16 years to accomplish. Truly, Obama is history's greatest monster.

The problem, of course, is the "hurr derr" electorate that only listens to soundbites will buy into the "belief" that Obama has failed and could potentially make a "close" election a steal for RMoney and Co.
