I think the joke is based on the Japanese pronunciation of the company which is closer to "Toyoda" rather than how it is normally pronounced in English (apart from relatively famously the head of the US part of the company when they had their big recall a while back).

Okay, I RTFA and all it seems to be saying is that Toyota is back to being #1 in worldwide vehicle sales, having re-passed General Motors. Doesn't that imply that thanks to stimulus money etc. that GM was #1 thanks to Obama administration policies? As opposed to being bankrupt and oout of business as it would be without said policies?

And the Daily caller is citing that as a failure by the Democrats because?

Good. A good sales race is good for innovation and prices. Something we wouldn't have had, along with a ton of jobs, should the company have failed. Not to mention retirees like my dad, who would be likely sans pension if Romney and his ilk been in charge.

I too fail to see the problem.

Actually, TFA flat out says "Toyota had grabbed the top-selling title in 2008, but lost it to GM for 2010 after a battery of problems including the aftermath of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, floods in Thailand and the lingering effects of millions of recalls."

Heh... I love a good prank, but that was a shiatty thing to do to that woman. Apparently she had busted her ass trying to win the contest, too (Making a lot of money for the restaurant she worked at, as well).

I loved that the restaurant settled and gave her enough money to buy a new car. Who's laughing now?

It would have been funny if they did that, just long enough to see her spirit break, and then presented her with an actually car. Doing the toy alone was a douche move.

On the radio this morning (NPR, biatches!), I heard that GM sold 240K new cars last month. Toyota sold ~187K. So there's that.

"All the president's men" is the new code word coming in from Team Rmoney, is it?

It's not working.

2012-09-05 08:10:17 AM
The "larger truth..." is that Mitt Romney wanted to stop the government intervention bailing out GM and now the asshole is shamelessly trying to take credit for GM's continued existence while you mental midgets try to pretend that saying "Toyota has slipped ahead of GM again therefore Obama's people are lying when they assert it's number one again" essentially is you making some kind of important point.

The larger truth is that "Tucker Carlson's Daily Caller" is really the result of 3 million dollars in donation by Foster Friess (Yes, Santorum's sugar daddy) and other GOP fat cats.

It's a full time mouthpiece for the GOP (especially it's wealthy donors) and if I had to rate it as a blog I would have to be honest and say it sucks.

That's the larger truth here.

Absolutely... And it would have been a pretty good prank, but instead they looked like colossal assholes.

So the complaint is that GM has gone from #1 to #2 in worldwide sales and this is somehow Obama's fault.

I guess the unanswered question remains, where would GM be if we'd listened to the Romney and let the company go under?

GOP again making Obama's point for him. If the GOP and especially Mitt were calling the shots at that time GM wouldn't be anywhere near as strong as they are right now.

GM is at #2 in the world thanks to Obama and that bailout. Thousands of retirees pensions were saved thanks to a decision Obama made.

how bad is it when you can't even shill for your guy without somehow pointing out that he was wrong?

Fun Fact: the family that originally founded Toyota actually did spell their name "Toyoda." They changed the spelling when the company went into producing vehicles because "Toyoda" means "abundant rice field" in Japanese, and replacing the "d" with a "t" was thought to give the company name a more pleasant pronunciation.

Article explaining why Toyota is more competitive than GM, from 2005.
A close look at the numbers at GM and Toyota shows diametrically different conditions.

About 1,200 of Toyota's Japanese employees will retire this year. Within two years, each will switch from the company-backed health insurance scheme to the national health plan. At that point, Toyota's spending on its retiree's health care drops to zero.

Toyota pays health care costs for its employees in Japan in the form of premiums for medical insurance. But it does not continue to pay those costs for retirees. Former employees of Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. also turn to the Japanese government for health care coverage.

The American Big 3 pay - and pay and pay - for their retirees' health care.

GM covers the health care costs of approximately 125,000 active employees and 339,000 retirees. Health care costs for those retirees amounted to approximately $3.6 billion last year.

How selective Dems/Libs are in their facts...GM still owes ~27 Billion dollars to the US tax-payer. Currently at $21.24/share.....needs to be over $50.00/share to be profitable.

Indeed. Much like the Hot Coffee incident, we only got enough of the story to make the person who "won" the case look like an idiot instead of a victim, so when they got their settlement we could hear about a "record breaking case" and corporate whores could go on TV and talk about tort reform while the other party was bound by a gag order as a condition of the settlement.

So there was very little coverage of the skin grafts Hot-Coffee Grandma had to pay for, and there was very little coverage of the exact context of the contest. Also very little coverage about the fact that Grandma only got her medical bills paid for and free coffee for life, instead of some kind of cadillac settlement... oddly.

That got kind of off-track. Point is, I hate our country's press. They suck at their jobs.
