Doctor Who graduated from the Hollywood Upstairs Medical College?

Craddock instead prescribed cyprostat, a drug used to treat prostate cancer and manage sexual deviation by reducing testosterone

How the hell do they figure reducing testosterone would make him less gay?

TFA has it.

Craddock instead prescribed cyprostat, a drug used to treat prostate cancer and manage sexual deviation by reducing testosterone

He was just "managing" the gay.  Gay is self-evidently deviant.

And isn't the chemical castration that's sometimes applied to pedophiles also about testosterone reduction?

"There's medication you can go on for these things."

*head-desk*

Where's the religious connection?

Both men were at the time members of the Exclusive Brethren, a conservative Christian group whose members shun television, radio, and the Internet and do not vote.

Knew it had to be in there somewhere.

Wait, conservatives Christians who don't vote out of principle?

"Doctor who?" is the eternal question whose answer will destroy the universe.

Huh? The rest of the stuff doesn't seem particularly odd for a religious group but what's wrong with voting?

He doesn't need a regular doctor, he needs to see a therapist. Or an analyst. Or one of those guys who does both, you know, an analyst-therapist.

Where's Tobias when you need him?

I have a sense, that it may not have been the intended result... The doctor probably fancies a bit of booty plundering himself.
And he might as well make sure that when he hooks up with a young male patient, that he stays boyish.

His mistake was to forget the roofies.

fusillade762: He was just "managing" the gay. Gay is self-evidently deviant.

At one point, that's how it was looked at, yes. Now the only remaining homosexual-related behavior in the DSM IV is Ego-Dystonic Homosexuality. Basically put, you're homosexual, and hate yourself for it, which incidentally sounds kinda like this case, I have to say.

That said, I'm not sure how you can say that a drug that has been clinically indicated to "manage sexual deviance" is "not clinically indicated" in a case like this. Ethically, I think prescribing it was shady, and at the very least, grossly negligent- this probably could have better been taken care of by a psychiatric referral over drugs- bearing in mind that many patients will refuse psychiatric referral because of the negative stigma it carries with it.

In fact, I notice the patient's wishes are barely discussed in this article. I dunno about you, but this sounds exactly like the sort of patient who would make unwise demands based on little to no medical expertise, ala: "Yanno doc, I came to you looking for help, I don't want no bleedin' head shrink. Can't you just give me something to make me not gay?!"

If you were going to "treat" a case like this without any counseling or psychiatric intervention of any sort, what would you prescribe? Preparation H? I dunno. There's apparently a lot missing from this story.

If you lower testosterone levels/activity, you lower sex drive somewhat, and you no longer want to screw men (or women). The doctor's reasoning makes sense.

Why not just go for sex reassignment surgery? Then it wouldn't be gay anymore...

I'm imagining it's John 15:19: "If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you." KJV

It's often interpreted by some sects as a command for Christians to stay aloof from earthly politics and affairs, to be "in the world but not of the world". It's part of the rationale for why JW's refuse to serve in the military, for example.

As for trying to "cure" homosexuality with hormonal alterations, why not ask Alan Turing how that turned out.

FTFA:
Craddock instead prescribed cyprostat, a drug used to treat prostate cancer and manage sexual deviation by reducing testosterone, in circumstances which were not clinically indicated, the commission alleged.

Sooo, patient comes in and asks for help in managing his sexual deviation, and doctor prescribes something that will manage sexual deviation, and doctor then gets in trouble for prescribing medication that will manage sexual deviation in a patient presenting with sexual deviation that needs management.

Sounds about right...for doctors.

So he's giving the gay guy medication that's used in the feminization process for m2f transsexuals? Apparently these "exclusive brethren" (a gay bar name if I ever heard one) take their hints towards sexuality from the Iranian mullahs.

was going to say THIS.

For the less historically minded, it ended up badly. Turing wound up killing himself and set back the onset of the information age by decades. He was prescribed medication to reduce testosterone, which it was believed would cure his queerness. It was a not unheard of treatment back in the late 40s.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who knows that when you reduce testosterone in adult males, estrogen production increases.

StrangeQ: Perhaps you missed

Well, I missed the bit where the doc himself belonged, yes, I suppose.

But then again, so did the patient, from what I can see.

FTA: In a letter of complaint to the commission, the patient wrote that he came out as gay at the age of 18 and was informed by a church leader, "There's medication you can go on for these things."

If not that specific denomination/organization, then a very similar one. I have a feeling that- had this happened in the US, we'd be hearing about it from Fox News, and it'd be spun as a "Religious Freedoms" issue.

Hon, Mark and David Greer were part of the Alternative Medicine "Biomedical" autism treatment movements, the same group which includes Andrew Wakefield and Jenny McCarthy.

Oncology Doctor David Gorski - better known as the Skeptical Blogger Orac - comments on the long history of quackery the Greers have commited.
