I just hope that this all passes bloodlessly and that the country regains stability soon. It's sad how far it's declined over the last decade and god knows the region needs stability.

I do think it's a little freaky. My boyfriend said last week he heard about things going down, but it hasn't been in the news from 5-5.30 (stupid gym tvs) although other world news has.

I just want to say that I'm kind of proud of these Georgians in a way; I mean, you just get democracy in the few decades, you hold on to the damn concept any way you can. Here we're just letting it get old and corrupt its way towards death. Not that it's good to have giant bloody revolutions or anything, I too hope everything gets settled peacably, but I feel like some people might be thinking 'No, let's not have half-assed, in name only democracy like some countries do.'

Might be worth pointing out here that there are small numbers of American troops in Georgia. Basically military advisors, sent there to teach them how to deal with terrorists.

Our reasons for interest in this country - well, we want to stop the spread of terrorism of course, but it's probably just coincidence that a pipeline across Georgia would be a great way to get oil out of Azerbijan. (sarcasm)

Politicaly difficult for us too, Shevardnadze did a lot to bring the end of the USSR and is well liked in the west for that reason, but thing have really gone downhll since then.

At least credit for a bloodless revolution. Had this happened in US or other Western 'peaceful' countries, they would be turned into swiss cheese for entering the political headquarters.

By the way, the flag looks like England's flag because both honour Saint George, each's national saint.

Main issues in Georgia as far as I know include religious oppression and lack of action by authorities against it, several human rights issues, and several nationalities who want more autonomy, such as Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Ajaria.

Stalin was Georgian. He had 20 million Russians killed. On the plus side, the wine is good and the women are hot...if ya like a big bush,,,

speedfreakR34, the election in Florida wasn't stolen, the rightful winner is in the Oval Office. If it HAD been stolen, then Gore would be there.

I'll admit, I'm baffled.

What are you trying to say? Do the quotation marks around 'peaceful' mean that you think a country that can't be overthrown by a group of unarmed protesters cannot be truly peaceful? Should Western nations begin allowing mobs of protesters to enter their parliament buildings? Should the right of the mob to overthrow the standing government and install their own leaders be guaranteed?

I believe they already made a game about this...

Here ya go Weisenheimer

Early in the year, the company, ChoicePoint, gave Florida officials a list with the names of 8,000 ex-felons to "scrub" from their list of voters. But it turns out none on the list were guilty of felonies, only misdemeanors. The company acknowledged the error, and blamed it on the original source of the list -- the state of Texas.

Revolution begins in Russia. In a related story, a Typhoon Class Nuclear Submarine surfaced right in the middle of New York Harbor today. The captain popped the hatch and declaired "Here I am."

There is another reason we were sending military advisors to Georgia. There have threats by Russia in the past couple years of going into Georgia and taking care of their problems for them. The terrorists who have been causing Russia problems (like blowing up an apartment building and taking hostages at an opera house) are all opperating out of Georgia. Some say they have been opperating with tacit support from the Georgian government.

When the US sent military advisors to Georgia, Russia raised a big stink about it and increased their military presence along the Georgian border. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I believe most terrorist actions happening in Russia originate and operate from Chechnya, not Georgia. I could be wrong, though.

2003-11-22 03:39:22 PM
BBCPFC The terrorists are Chechnyan, but Chechnya is still part of the Russian Federation and borders on Georgia. They are using the Georgian border to hide from Russian retribution.

Some of the Georgian people support the Chechnyan rebels tacitly because they share a resentment of Russians held over from the time they were controlled by the Soviet Union.

Not to mention Russia seems intent on re-asserting its power over these two states again.

There is a place in Georgia, called the Pankisi Gorge, and some guys who don't like us, are hanging out there. It is believed to be one of the lesser known areas where Al Qaeda and friends hang out, along with various isolated locations in South America.
