Yes, because Bill Clinton has such a long history of not pulling off political speeches.

2012-09-04 09:33:42 AM
even though I didn't always agree with Bill Clinton...the guy knows how to give a keynote speech. I mean...it's kind of what he did for a good portion of his life. i'm sure he knows how to handle this speech.

Instead of an empty chair, Clinton will address his rhetorical debate with a slightly used cigar.

I guess the Republicans are hoping that the DNC convention will be as bad - or worse - than their own. I don't necessarily see that happening but it's never a good thing for your own chances when you have to hope that your opponent screws up so that you can score some points.

2012-09-04 09:38:21 AM
In an Old West shootout, I'd probably want (young) Eastwood, but in politics, I'd want Slick Willy to have my back every time.

2012-09-04 09:39:20 AM
These guys have never seen Clinton give a keynote before have they?

/Protip: There will never be another moment at any national political convention that will come close to being as embarrassing, profoundly silly and disconnected from reality as Eastwood's empty chair rant.

I'm actually looking forward to the DNC this week.

Need something to counter the unremitting derp and bald faced lies of last week.

2012-09-04 09:40:31 AM
Yeah you really have to nit-pick on Clinton to find anything he's said that sounds anti-policy. In a venue like this where it's him vs. audience he's in his sweet spot.

And this is Obama, the guy that made the Kerry convention look vaguely exciting, so even if someone does screw-up I don't know if it'll be something the Dems can't recover from.

Conservative media will treat even minor things like they caught Obama having an affair with a man while snorting coke though.

Will penis-faced aliens with lasers shooting out of their fingers cast Obama into The Phantom Zone, thus making Sarah Palin automatically president?

I'm sure the DNC convention will be fact checked as much as the RNC one was....it will be very interesting to compare the results with the RNC convention lie-orama.

Not hardly, subby. Clinton knows what he's doing, unlike Dirty Harry. I don't believe for even a nanosecond that he'd get up there and do something that might hinder his party's chance at winning reelection. He's done some dumb shiat before, but he's not an idiot.

2012-09-04 09:59:26 AM
They call him slick Willie because he's got a nasty t-zone.

2012-09-04 10:02:01 AM
Pretty sure Clinton isn't senile, either.

Honestly, it would be kinda fun for a WTF moment at the DNC. I just hope it's one of those "laugh with the Dems" instead of "laugh at the Dems..."

Actually, his speech at the '88 convention was a disaster. People cheered when he finally finished because he went on so long.

Coco LaFemme: I don't believe for even a nanosecond that he'd get up there and do something that might hinder his party's chance at winning reelection.

There's that, however, I see two other angles: (1) He wants to reinforce his legacy as a good president -- and the most damning way he can do that is to compare how he left the country in 2001 and how the GOP left the country in 2009. (2) Bill looooooves campaigning; if you gave him the choice, he'd probably freestyle for the entirety of the convention.

2012-09-04 10:37:27 AM
There aren't a whole lot of politicians I'd trust to make a decent unvetted speech more than Bubba Clinton.

Good luck with pinning your hopes on the "other" guys doing as much damage to themselves as you just did.

It's a strategy that cannot possibly lose...

That was in 88.. A lot has changed since then including him being in the hotseat for 8 years. The Repubtards don't have an X president to call on because Reagan was pretty much a space cadet by 86 plus hes dead and Bush is persona non-grata. I find the Bush part quite humorous.. the fact that they can't call on their own X president is very telling of their policy initiatives.

Remember when SNL dedicated an entire skit to Phil-Hartman-as-Clinton jogging into a Burger King and stealing everyone's food?

Amazing what one sex scandal will do for a guy's reputation.

If your cunning plan involves Bill Clinton stepping on his dick while delivering a political speech to the Democratic National Convention then you may as well just take crayon in fist and start sketching Christie/Jindal 2016 signs.

so a little off topic but has anyone mentioned yet that the republican nominee for president almost literally has "empty chair" listed on his CV due to his time as the inactive chairman of bain capital?

Ulgh. I'd rather return to the days of "Dubya" then deal with a Chris Christie presidency. That guy is such a huge asshole.

My summary of the past few presidential transitions:

Jimmy Carter: "Hey Ronnie, look there are a few dents and scratches on this 67 Mustang and it doesn't run well, I can't seem to find any gas for it. I added some solar panels to the roof but haven't figured out how to make it all electric. Maybe you can figure it out. Also there's an outstanding bill for about 5,000 on it."

Ronald Reagan: "Hey George Sr, here are the keys to this here Mustang. Now look, I took all the dents and scratches out, I took off those silly solar panels Carter put on, put spikes on the front of it, and mounted some lasers on the front. The lasers don't really work but they make it look scary. It'll roll right over countries, but, look, the spikes and lasers cost a bit, so this car you now owe about 15,000 on it. Well, actually more like 30,000 when you account for inflation the past 8 years.

Bush Sr: "Hey Bill, I mounted a machine gun on the top. Look, umm, I might have taken out like oh another 15,000 on it so there's about 45,000 owed on this baby. I might have hit a few cars, but I fixed up the dents. OK maybe there are still a couple. The engine started making a weird sound, I don't know what's up with that, never good at engines."

Clinton: "Hey George Jr. George, over here George. Your dad asked me to watch this for you for a few years. He didn't take very good care of this classic car. He added a lot of bells and whistles that was doing nothing for it. I fixed up the engine, which was badly in need of repair, it cost me a little more than I thought, you now owe about 60,000 but now you shouldn't have to pay a dime more to keep it in tip top shape. In fact this baby's a collector's item and will probably improve in price the next five to ten years if you treat it right. I took off a whole bunch of unneeded crap like machine guns and lasers and spikes, and replaced it with some powerful halogen lights so people won't run into you. Stop twiddling your thumbs and pay attention, George. Now, there might be some stains in the back of the car on the upholstery, don't worry about those. Giggity."

George: "Hey Barack, what's happening man? OK look, this car is gonna be your legacy. I'm gonna be honest with you. This car doesn't look good, OK? Stop staring at me like that. Yes, I realize it's still on fire. Look, I might have driven it off a cliff. OK a really tall cliff. The nitrous I put in the back of the car kind of blew up when it hit the bottom. Someone keyed my car back in 2001 so I added dual mounted machine gun turrets, it's all automated. OK they are broken now but they looked really cool like 5 years ago. The engine is kind of in bad shape. I stripped some parts off and gave them to some of my buddies, so I'm sorry it's not much to look at. Also you owe like I dunno 200,000 on it. So I'm gonna give you like 4 years to repair it and then you can give it to my younger brother Jeb. If you find any powdery substance hidden in the seats, it's mine, just give me a call and I'll come pick it up. Listen, I'm only gonna tell you this once. Don't scratch up this car, it's a classic."

Obama 2012: "Hey guys I realize I owe you all a lot of money, like 400,000. I told you guys I'd have it fixed in four years. Well, it was kind of a mess when I started looking into it. This thing is about 2/3 fixed, it runs now, I've spent the past four years working on it 24/7 and it's a lot better than it was, but I gotta be honest it was literally on fire when I got it from George. I took off one of the machine gun turrets but he welded them to the frame of the car, they are very hard to remove. It now runs partially on electricity which is pretty cool. You give me four more years and I'll have this thing in tip top shape, but yeah it's gonna be a while before you get your money back."

Romney: "Look at this car, it's like half finished! Forget about four years ago when Georgie drove it off a cliff. Why do you continue to blame him for something that happened four whole years ago? Folks, Obama is on the wrong path. I gotta be honest, I'm a pretty bad mechanic and driver, but I'm a great businessman. When I get the car, I promise to hire some people who know about cars to strip it for parts and give my friends the parts. In exchange, most of you will get an IOU (I'm sorry, I mean a voucher) which entitles you to 1% off MSRP at the local Hyundai dealership. I know you want a little more from me, but I'll give you more specifics after you give me the car."

And from what I can tell, H.W. isn't too sharp anymore, either, which is kinda sad.

But yeah, I don't know if I'd call "someone giving a really long speech" to be disastrous, but anyone bringing up a long speech he did 25 years ago and saying that he's got just as much chance of pulling down the convention as Eastwood is reaching so far that they may as well just legally change their name of Stretch Armstrong.

Clinton is going to deliver a speech, not humiliate himself in an attempt to show that he's slipping into senile dementia.

2012-09-04 01:20:50 PM
Bill Clinton? Someone is worried that Bill Clinton might give a speech without direction, "oomph" or significant substance? The guy who once famously forgot his notes, yet delivered the speech anyway, and still took questions?

Yes, the speech was about (IIRC) the CGI, which he'd know plenty about anyway - just like politics and the DNC. I suspect Bubba's got some working knowledge of those.

// be funny if he had an empty chair there anyway
// "This is where Mitt Romney would sit. Moving on..."
