Isn't giving them all a grade in a class without a teacher illegal? They compound it by giving them a 65. It's not the student's fault that the teachers aren't there - that's the administration's fault. So, the students are penalized further,

Sounds like this school's administration (represented in this article by the vice principal) is living in a dream world. They probably have been doing these things for longer than we think, but no one has called them to task on it. Hopefully this ABC news exposure will do just that.

Just thought - they have to be saving a pretty penny not having a teacher or staffing with a lot of subs. Wonder where that money is going?

Student: "They got to stop this problem, they need to hire a math teacher."

See if you can get them to throw in an English teacher. I wouldn't look to ABC's writers, though - so far in this article I've counted

2 mispellings
1 lack of closed quotes
1 absence of an apostrophe
1 improper use of a comma

2003-11-22 11:14:55 AM
Subject/verb agreement, please.
2003-11-22 11:16:52 AM
2 + 2 = I'm Batman...

23 * 3 = Wait'll they get a load of me...

3864 / 56 = Holy Rusted Metal, Batman...

/got nuthin'

Holy Differential Equation, Batman!

Kids gotta learn about Batman sooner or later.
2003-11-22 11:23:53 AM
Ha ha! I thought it said they were watching a "Bartman" movie.
2003-11-22 11:25:16 AM
So all these kids' GPAs are going to get completely hosed... brilliant.. when they try to apply for an outside program or pre-college class they'll have to explain why they got a D- in math? Jesus.. if my kid was in that situation I'd be on the bloody war path.
2003-11-22 11:25:52 AM
You can thank unions for the dumbing down of american kids.

They would have plenty of math teachers if it was not for unions.
2003-11-22 11:27:02 AM
"Won't someone please think of the children?"

You know, besides Blockbuster.
2003-11-22 11:29:04 AM
Am I the only one that finds it funny that the "education reporter" wrote this?

Okay, horrifying not funny.
2003-11-22 11:30:06 AM
I hope they at least got to see the really good Batman movie.

Methinks both the author of the headline and the students quoted in the article are sorely in need of an English teacher.
2003-11-22 11:34:17 AM
There was a story like this last night on CBS about those schools for foster kids. An undercover camera caught them watching movies, showed the "principal" playing dominoes while talking to the undercover cameraman, just overall poor conditions.

Once class had no computers and was run down like hell. They caught up with the owner of the school at her home - a NICE home, complete with her 2002 Jaguar. She insisted that she makes "no money", even though the state gives her $24,000 per student per year.

Headline writer need Engrish teacher
2003-11-22 11:38:45 AM
Hey I watched the wonder years for 8th grade english class! (all year while teacher had a mental breakdown.. )
2003-11-22 11:42:41 AM
But $87,000,000,000 in free money for Iraq (Halliburton)
2003-11-22 11:43:22 AM
They should have played Pi, I actually watched that movie in my Math class with my teacher present. More educational than the Caped Crusader.
2003-11-22 11:45:25 AM
I read that as Bartman the first 3 times I read the headline.

Very confusing.
2003-11-22 11:45:33 AM
Shouldn't they be watching Sesame Street? Problem solved!

Student: "We're not learning anything at al , just learning about Batman."

That article was just plain painful to read.
2003-11-22 11:48:39 AM
It's pretty obvious why there's a math teacher shortage. I mean, if you're good enough at math to teach it, you'd probably rather go into comp sci or engineering or accounting or something where you get paid decent money not to be abused by a bunch of snot nosed monsters.
2003-11-22 11:50:26 AM
"Hello Good Citizen. My name is Batman. Would you like to be my sidekick? Would you like that? Would you like to ride with...BATMAN?!"

/Snickers Batman commerial. Best. Commercial. Ever.

OK I can appreciate that there is a shortage of teachers who are qualified to teach mathematics. However, in the article the classes without a maths teacher is year 8. Unless what students learn for mathematics in year 8 has advanced considerably since I was at school, I find it hard to believe that they could not find anyone whether or not he/she specialised in mathematics to teach the class. It is only year 8 maths not year 12.

However, mathematics is an important subject and if there is such a shortage of maths teachers. Here is a suggestion.

Offer fully paid university degrees to students willing to study mathematics with the provision that they must after the degree spend 5 years teaching in public schools. If they do not meet this criteria they must then pay for their degree.

"I'm Batman"....

"I'm BATMAN"....

"I am B.A.T.M.A.N"....

"Batman be I"....

"Batman is me"....

*points to himself* "Here be Batman"

Anyone else care to expand on Mr. Keaton's famous line from Batman?

Back when I was at school we went nearly a whole year without our French teacher. She was in the building, but actually coming to class and teaching was never a priority. Long story short, none of us learned French but we sure as hell wern't going to complain. Best lesson of the week.

"But $87,000,000,000 in free money for Iraq (Halliburton)"

You could fund the present US public school system with 100% of GDP. It won't make a difference as long as the unionize anti-competition thugs run the show. The education business in America is the largest government make-work project ever invented.

Personally, I wish I had a richer knowledge of how to fight evil clowns.
2003-11-22 12:08:13 PM
Senior year of high school, in my computer graphics class, we had a substitute teacher. We thought, great, this guy looks like an asshole. Nope, he whipped out Spaceballs, and popped it into the tv, and that's how I spent one afternoon in high school. Watching Spaceballs in class.
2003-11-22 12:09:34 PM
This is also the year that 8th grades apply for high school, and class work is a key factor in the application process.

Okay, maybe I've lived a sheltered life, but since when have students had to apply for Highschool?! Isn't going to highschool sort of a given? (assuming you actually want to go and stuff)
2003-11-22 12:13:53 PM
I wish I could go to that school!
2003-11-22 12:15:29 PM
Arrgh mates! I be Batman, ye scurvy dogs!
2003-11-22 12:16:53 PM
Parent: "She reads, and basicly just sits in classroom, do absolutely nothing, there's no teacher."

I think the parent must have gone to the same school.

Marge : There's a man here who says he can help you.
Homer : Is it Batman?
Marge : He's a scientist.
Homer : Batman's a scientist.
Marge : It's not Batman!

So, how are all of these kids supposed to know how to count out change when they go to work at the local deli?
2003-11-22 12:44:38 PM
What about Techwar?

2003-11-22 12:45:48 PM
Isn't Michael Bloomberg that mayor of New York? Jesus tapdancing Christ... a school in a city run by one of the richest men in the world can't find money for a math teacher? Why doesnt Bloomberg just donate their salaries and import someone. In Pittsburgh right now, there's a shortage of jobs for teachers.

"Parents say the school tried to appease them by giving all the students a passing scores of 65"

This is outrageous. If I were a parent I would hold a public protest against the school board and threaten a lawsuit. I thought thinks like this couldn't happent in the U.S.
2003-11-22 12:56:44 PM

I think it's very important that these kids learn about the use of shark repellent.

wait, maybe that's science, not math.

Don't worry. Countries like Japan, are working on the math teacher shortage.
2003-11-22 01:03:43 PM

There's a public high school and a vocational one in my town, you had to apply to one or the other. That's probably the situation there.
2003-11-22 01:14:25 PM
The mysterious lack of s's on the articles today puzzles me.

I must agree with doctechnical. Judging by the grammatical and spelling errors in this article, that town has more problems than a nonexistent math teacher.
2003-11-22 01:46:30 PM
...but of course they probably have football coaches.

2003-11-22 01:46:35 PM
Ok all you grammar nazi's, riddle me this:

What is the difference between "cannot" and "can not"? Is it one word or two? I'm only asking because this chick said she'd sleep with me if I found the answer. I can't possibly imagine her actually going through with it, but I want to find out so I can rub it in her face. Um... the answer I mean.
2003-11-22 02:02:46 PM
"Batman's a scientist"

Am I the only one that thought of this?
