Ed's got the same old axe. Sure he replaced the head 3 times and the handle twice, but it's still the same old axe.

I really can't stand them, that one "song" simply gets overplayed far to much. Every radio/Bar across the US has to play it at least once a day.

/my vision of hell is burning on fire while ronnie van zant sings Fireebirds over and over.

This would have been a funnier headline had the dead died of old age.

Pretty much this.
It's not like anything original has come out of them.
I know one hard core fan.
My old High School sweetheart. She's been stuck in 1973 since then.

They're also blatantly pandering to the Tea Party crowd. I very much doubt they're playing "Saturday Night Special" or "The Ballad Of Curtis Loew" anymore - or booing the Govnuh in "Sweet Home Alabama".

/at least I saw them when Powell and Wilkeson were still alive

Pants full of macaroni!!: /at least I saw them when Powell and Wilkeson were still alive

I saw them 3 or 4 times, the last time was in 2001, Leon had recently died and many people were wearing hats in his honor. They played 'Tuesday's gone'. 2 days later, ON A TUESDAY, 9/11 happened. Coincidence? Yes.

I saw them about 10 years ago, they did it then, but a lot has changed since then.

Zero respect for any band that uses a rebel flag in their imagery. I'm a racist prick and even i hate what that flag stands for....

Yeah, I saw them in like the late 90s when they definitely had more than 1 original member still around .

Depends on what one means by what it stands for. It is but an object and therefore, like all other objects, it's what its used for that's good or bad, not the object itself. The Confederate flag can be used as a symbol of racism and hatred. Or it can be used as a symbol of where one if from. For any one person to say what any object represents to them is what is while at the same time refusing to recognize that it doesn't mean the same thing to other people is arrogant and self centered.

Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines were 2 of the most important members (songwriters/singers). So subby is pretty much correct. Not the same band without those 2 guys.

Look at you attending community college like a big shot. Did you learn that little pseudo-intellectual tidbit in your Intro to Art class yesterday?

We're not talking about something somebody painted with their ass cheeks and hung in a modern art exhibit, we're talking about a flag that was created for a specific purpose and flown by a specific group of people attempting to achieve a specific goal in a specific era of the history of a specific country.

It means something specific. Flying the confederate rebel flag and trying to convince people it doesn't inherently symbolize racism is as sensible as flying the hammer and sickle and trying to convince people it symbolizes freedom.

You can claim it means whatever you want to you, people are just going to think that means you're too dumb to know the history behind it.

Even when all those guys were alive they were terrible.

So terrible that I walked out on them.

Twice.

Sucky music sucks even with a Southern accent and wearing a Keystone Kops hat.

I saw them in July----Heart opened for them and I really wanted to see Heart. Stuck it out for about half of "Skynyrd". The did play Saturday Night Special, but to be fair I don't think the crowd understands the anti-gun message.

They've just been animating the corpse for Weekend at Skynyrd's ever since.

Saw them at a hockey arena in Lewiston ME summer '76. Same arena where Ali beat Liston with the phantom punch in February '64. The Cate Brothers (current single - 'Union Man') opened. (for LS, not the boxing match)

Isn't it the war flag anyways, and not merely the "south is great" flag anyways?

/not that it matters, I don't believe for a minute that the folks with the ron paul banners next to the confederate flag in Monroe County, Michigan are fine upstanding folks.

With that said, Cloudchasers posts always fit the mold of apologizing for or muddying the waters of douchebags. I don't know why a furry so constantly stands up for folks who would stone him in the town square if given the chance, but I guess if it works for him, that's fine.

And, Saturday Night Special is their best song. Sweet Home Alabama or Freebird are great, but on my stations they get more playtime than Bohemian Rhapsody. It's that bad.

Lynyrd Skynyrd's album Second Helping is a great example of how Record Plant turned music recording into an art form. If you're a recording junkie read up on that place during the 1970's.

The current county fair horsesh*t lineup of Skynyrd might draw the racists and rednecks, but that's not how the original band operated. As others have noted, the song Curtis Lowe is them giving props to a black man -- a white kid from the South in 1974 singing this by the way. On that same album is their cover of J.J. Cale's Call Me the Breeze, which is some of the finest Southern Boogie ever laid out on tape. The horn arrangement on the track still gives me an eargasm.

But yeah, the current "Lynyrd Skynyrd" is a goddamn joke.

That would be like using a swastika to proclaim that you are from Germany. EVERYBODY knows what the confederate flag symbolizes. And it ain't " Hey, I' from down south."

I heard one of their new songs on the radio.

Apparently, 1990s pop country = 2012 new rock song by classic southern rock band.

Vegan Meat Popsicle: it doesn't inherently symbolize racism

Actually, it symbolizes secessionism. Sadly, racism tends to be inherent to one race (the human race), but seceding from a nation over something that is not, say, genocide or apartheid or bigotry AGAINST HUMAN RIGHTS, is something that can and should be avoided.

And I mean, I think slavery is one of those issues that went beyond "racism." I look at that word as the person who thinks this minority group or that minority group gets more government benefits, or won't hire/rent a house because of color, or thinks Obama was born in Kenya. Slavery falls under a worse category.
