I remember when we had US leaders that understood how the outside world operated, and thus shiat like these people weren't allowed to obtain power, much less control of the most strategic shipping lane in the entire farking world.

For those saying "so what?" it used to be a woman could just walk around not even covered in Egypt and it was a normal thing- on the women's rights scale they are currently regressing.

Had a friend who went there recently on vacation with her husband and son and dressed conservatively and even then she was called a whore and worse. Yeah wanted to go there to dive but definitely won't be going now...

You mean when we traded monstrous, communist-loving dictators that were friendly to the USSR (and even ones that weren't so monstrous) for monstrous, "freedom loving" dictators friendly to the US?

Yeah. That foreign policy worked out REAL well. You know how we have all those South American and Middle Eastern countries which hate us?

I'll let you ponder on that for a bit.

You know how I know you don't know anything? Last time I looked women are walking around with very short skirts all over Japan without a widespread epidemic of sexual assaults. And the last I did look was... Just now.

Mini skirts are the only good thing about summer in Japan.

That's a bit simplistic. I just spent the summer in Oman. I walked around in jeans and a t-shirt when Omani women wore full black abaya and usually niqab (face veil) as well. Men stared, granted. But NOBODY ever touched me. Not me or any of the other young women in the program. They were completely respectful. Not all Middle Eastern cultures are the same.

Egypt, however, is getting worse and worse, and lots of people are trying to figure out why.

Yeah, I know that all Middle Eastern countries aren't the same. But I get a bit pissed off at the Saudis, though. And that's ignoring the fact that they pretend to be our friend one moment, and stab us in the back the next when it's convenient.

They are legendary hedonistic perverts, and have a huge culture built up around sexual victimization - especially of foreign workers - and of underground homosexuality. Yet to hear them talk, they hold themselves up on an ivory pillar of moralism which detests, among other things - women having rights and sexuality.

Huh. You know who else does that?

I dunno, here in the US every college campus it kitted out with rape phones...

Not saying I'd prefer to be a woman in either Japan or Egypt, but just want to point out that the US isn't exactly some kind of paradise of women's liberation when it comes to sexual violence.

As TFA points out, said violence can be a backlash to gains women make in other spheres. Brute force sexual violation is the last refuge of the terrified mysoginist, and in each of these nations, women are targets in the places where men feel their power threatened.

Well I don't really remember saying the US is. To talk about your point, an area where hormones and booze is rampant you can have a lot more cases of sexual violence. HOWEVER, in most of the rest of society you don't need reminders to please not sexually harass someone.

Have you see the side by side pictures from the classrooms in the 70's vs today's? I'm not sure if this BBC article has them. I saw this on the BBC website the other day and dug into it a little bit. It's partly due to unemployment - but mostly islasmism. They are are really sliding back into the dark ages with this stuff.

Arab mentality, plain and simple. The cause is rooted in cultural and social factors, the patriarchal attitude, inequality between men and women.
The politically correct sheep can foam at the mouth but that's reality. I suggest some reading: 1, 2, 3.

Because religion makes people stupid.

Religion has always been around and it's a bit simplistic to think of that as the sole cause. I think it's often used as a scapegoat and an excuse for both religious and non-religious individuals since time began.

I dream of the day where that excuse becomes a very weak and flimsy shield.

So if what is forbidden and unthinkable becomes the fuel for sexual desire, then Egyptian men ought to really get off on femdom porn?

Is there a way to check if this could be real, google stats or something?
I mean, if there's money to be made, how about targeting adverts directly at unilingual men of such countries?

Yeah, right, I know - 'who buys porn?'. But maybe if they understood what was being said..

How do you think the people of half the world feel about the US behaving in precisely the same way? Preaching freedom and imposing dictators is not a great way to make friends with them-the-people.
