Maybe they should stop going to Porn sites. Highly doubtful the FBI would release your computer for anything as small as $200 anyway. Besides, we have to balance that budget some way and what better way than going after people who hate taxes. See, no new taxes, but you'll pay none the less.

hej: Reminds me of a friend/ex-coworker that placed a snip of electrical tape over the front facing camera on his smartphone. He was concerned that he would be monitored by his carrier and/or law enforcement.

that is a capability on some of the software used by FBI,CIA and NSA

as for whether or not they are particularly interested in YOU is a whole other question.

but it is certainly possible

Karac: RexTalionis: One of the other attorneys at my firm got it on his machine. We have no idea how it got there.

99% of the sources of computer viruses break down into one of 3 categories: skeezy porn sites, skeezy gambling sites, or opening email attachments from people you don't know.

I'd bet on it being porn.

To make it 100%, the fourth category would be "remote security holes from unpatched OSs". I don't use AV software because I don't need it. Never fooled by emails or IM conversations. Never gone to shiatty web sites that give me spyware. Always de-clicked on "Install this BS" checkboxes from various legit software. Always updated my OS.

/AV software gives you a false sense of security
//it's not going to save you from that last couple of points, either

labman: Seemed pretty clear to me it was a scam and not the FBI.

Well, the closest it comes to saying it wasn't the FBI was some random guy quoted as saying ""The FBI is not taking money from you, or wanting any money from you in that manner." - not "This is not the FBI talking to you through your laptop." And given that most WND readers believe anything on their computer screens with a least 3 fwds: in the subject line and that Obama has already personally implanted them with tracking devices, then subby's headline gets to be much more reasonable.

I've had to clean that virus off of a friend's computer. Turned on your webcam and everything. He was convinced it was the FBI.

Of course he's got MS and his brain doesn't work quite right anymore.
