The Crack Hotels of the DNC
September 03, 2012 8:49 PM
By John Fund
The DNC shines the spotlight of the world stage on our Queen City. Delegates from all 50 states, 15,000 journalists, and more than 350 foreign leaders will experience Charlotte . . .

- Charlotte Business Journal, August 31, 2012

I can't speak for the delegates or ther foreign dignitaries, but many of the journalists I have spoken with here are appalled at the accommodations in Charlotte to which they were assigned by the DNC. National Review was assigned to two Knights Inn properties. Everyone who saw them fled immediately across state lines to an available Marriott in South Carolina rather than stay there. As one of our political correspondents reported:

The Knights Inn was the worst hotel I have ever seen, and I've stayed in many bad motels in my life. Two guys were dealing drugs in the room next to me, and a prostitute was working out of the parking lot. And this was in the early afternoon. The room itself was dirty, full of other people's stuff, etc.

I have never requested a hotel change in 3 years at NR. This was the first time I felt absolutely compelled.

It's not as if the DNC couldn't have figured out something was wrong with the properties. TripAdvisor had these recent comments on one of the Knights Inn properties: "wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy," "scared to death," and "pimps and prostitutes at night."

Nor was National Review singled out. Staff members from Politico and the Hill abandoned their assigned hotels, too. Staffers from the Hill found refuge in a cheap Microtel and considered it a comparative oasis.

Tucker Carlson, editor of The Daily Caller, told me that the Quality Inn his staff was assigned to was "the worst hotel you can imagine." TripAdvisor carried these recent reviews: "barely a Bates Motel," "scary area and parking lot," and "the worst."

Some of the scarcity of good hotels is due to Charlotte's relatively small size. It is the least populous city to host a national convention since the GOP held theirs in New Orleans in 1988, and the Big Easy had lots of hotels because of its popularity with tourists.

But there really is no excuse for anyone, especially women, to be assigned to hotels that are beyond dingy and in some cases clearly unsafe.

So the DNC didn't give the best accommodations to reporters from the National Review? Shocking - I hope they don't bias their coverage of the convention as a result....

2012-09-04 08:14:43 AM
What does NRO have against the people of Charlotte?

2012-09-04 08:15:29 AM
Thats pretty funny. Given the type of journos in their list of publications, I would imagine the crack-whores complained about the smell and had them thrown out for putting off the customers.

2012-09-04 08:16:42 AM
They probably saw some persons of color and assumed they were drug dealers and prostitutes. Talk about white flight.

2012-09-04 08:17:44 AM
At least it was a female prostitute, unlike the RNC.

2012-09-04 08:18:11 AM
This was not an accident. I am from Charlotte and someone is telling the author and Tucker Carlson "F*ck you, I hope you die in the parking lot". We do have plenty of nice accomodations, the Knights Inn will never be one of them. I am hard pressed to think of a more dangerous place to be in Charlotte after dark.

2012-09-04 08:18:20 AM
I don't consider myself a petty person, but I wouldn't exactly roll out the red carpet for incendiary assholes like John "Obsessed with Black Panthers" Fund and Tucker "Hurting America" Carlson either.

On Craigslist the M4M ads spiked in St Paul in 2008 and Tampa in 2012.

NotSoup: At least it was a female prostitute, unlike the RNC.

Why else would these guys be complaining?

PDid: They probably saw some persons of color and assumed they were drug dealers and prostitutes. Talk about white flight.

I lived about a mile from the hotel in question for 8 years. The area is pretty well mixed. Someone was most likely selling dope(they always are) and if any woman no matter what color is hanging out in that parking lot she is a whore.

2012-09-04 08:24:20 AM
So, it's better than Tampa?

2012-09-04 08:24:37 AM
In the old days, that's the type of accommodations journalists preferred...

Maybe this has more to do with the fact that Charlotte, like most of North Carolina, is a shiathole.

It's like that time that elite paramilitary group of Black Panthers surrounded that polling place and wouldn't let any white people vote.

Boo farking hoo. These are journalists. They are supposed to go into war zones and hang with the troops. Murrow did radio reports from rooftops during blitzkriegs, for shiat's sake. Daniel Pearl was abducted in Karachi and has his head chopped off. And Carlson is biatching about hotel accommodations? Fark him. It's past time he did some real journalism.

2012-09-04 08:34:11 AM
So, NRO doesn't book its own travel arrangements? Since when does the DNC book travel for all the journalists who show up? And, if the DNC didn't book the travel, then why couldn't the person who booked the travel for NRO have looked up the hotel the way the reporter did?

I'm just asking questions.

What kind of pussy journalists take accommodations and then biatch about them? They couldn't arrange it themselves?

Is there some security issue that required journalists covering it to go through the DNC? I don't see why NRO didn't book it themselves, on their own terms. I almost never hear of journalists covering shows like this not on their own company's dime. I go to Las Vegas every year for CES, and we book rooms in a hotel of the company's choosing, not the CEA's. Was all of Charlotte filled already that they couldn't handle it without logistics from the DNC?

Thises.

I can only assume this is common practice for both the DNC and the RNC, but why in the f*ck is it their responsibility to book rooms for fatbloggers?

Can any journalists here weigh in? Is it common practice, for instance, for the NFL to book rooms for sports journalists at the Super Bowl? If so, why?

Odds are they just saw a bunch of poor people and freaked out.

Besides, I though an NRO reporter would be a bootstrappy tough guy who carries a gun and would be able to protect themself.

Personally if I saw I was booked to stay at a Knights Inn I would be on Priceline/Hotwire getting a decent room before I left. Not out of fear of poor people though, out of fear of bedbugs and other sanitary reasons. I thought everyone knew places with the "Knights Inn" branding are shiatholes, especially journalists who travel a lot.

Especially coming from someone who in their profile says they live in PA. Their state liquor board makes ours seem sane. Now excuse me, I'm going to go to my local grocery store and buy a single can of beer and a bottle of wine without having to use a breathalyzer.

I always thought our "not before noon on a Sunday" law was nuts, until I went to Massachusetts and realized this supposedly progressive state outlawed Sunday sales, period.

You must be pretty young, you've only been able to buy liquor on Sunday in Pa for the last 5 years or so... and even then, only at certain stores.

I can remember when you could not buy an airlines drink when flying over Pennsylvania on a Sunday.

I'm surprised. Tampa is pretty much an extension of New York anymore and therefore...fairly Jewish.

You'll find your hate soon enough. Sometimes, it's natural and normal and healthy to hate a group based on their actions. To not feel hate for some people is abnormal.

Emotions are neither negative, nor positive, it's the given situation and our reaction to that situation that colors the emotions as negative/positive.

Seeing puppies makes me happy = Healthy.

Seeing puppies get turned into asphalt makes me happy = Unhealthy

Seeing a strange man give my wife a hug makes me jealous = healthy

Seeing my wife give her brother a hug makes me jealous = Unhealthy

The GOP is in such a sad state of affairs. They have the absolute worst candidate in the past 100 years or so, and very little left of any semblance of sanity on policy. Given the shape of the current economy, they should be winning Florida, PA, and OH, as well as Va. and NC. So, even with the Jim Crow like voter suppression going full force, they're likely going to lose in November. At that point, the far right will surely explode into something resembling Derpageddon. I fear for Ted Nugent.

Seriously, these morons were booked at a 'Knights Inn' and thought it would be decent? Aren't those rooms 49.95 or something?
