No, it is not a troll post. It is exactly right, and it is pretty disgusting. You know....these things aren't either/or....you don't have to either disavow worldly possessions and join the peace corps, nor go out of your way to prove the world's general impression that we are inconsiderate, callous, clueless, fat-asses. The third option would be to appreciate the things you have while retaining some farking dignity and consideration for those less fortunate than you. How much did it cost to make this.....thing?

America has some great ideas and good intentions for the world, but man, we are just fundamentally flawed in some way. I can't explain it exactly except to give examples- our religion of consumerism, our infatuation with celebrity.....the fact that we have more than 200 bases in 80 countries.....and a higher per capita incarceration rate than anyone but the most totalitarian regimes.....weekly mass shootings....etc etc etc.

We are fat, violent, and corrupt. Like Rome before the fall. Most of the world now sees us as a joke if not an enemy, and these days it seems like we are going out of our way to prove them right.

That's the thing about a free society, individuals are free to do stupid shiat. It does not mean the country as a whole is as you described. The U.S. gives more to those starving kids than any other country. If everything we did somehow had to pass judgement and not be offensive to all the poor and unfortunate people in the world today, we'd be a pretty sad country.

Fair enough. It's an extreme example, obviously. Though it's not hard to come up with lots of extreme examples....

However, it would be wrong to say that only a small portion of our society is ignorant and indifferent. Since June of last year, over 50,000 people have been killed and 650,000 displaced from Sudan's South Kordofan. How many Americans care, or have even heard of it? Would you guess it draws more or less interest and publicity than Here Comes Honey-Boo-Boo?

People in Africa are starving because they (as a society) are too stupid and/or corrupt to feed themselves. Look at different societies throughout world history and what they have accomplished. Look at the incredible architecture found in other societies and then look at the mud huts in Africa. Even with decades of assistance from the rest of the world, Africa is still a shiathole. That will never change as long as there are still Africans there.

I agree with you there. People in this country don't have a clue, or care to. If the shiat ever hit the fan in this country, and people had to live without their daily dose of stupid shows on tv, or Internet BS like Facebook and others, they'd never make it.

Well obviously we can't go through our lives in a constant state of depression because there are always starving people elsewhere while we enjoy lives of comfort. However there is a point to be made here; we don't have to be ostentatious arrogant assholes in our lives of comfort. This cheeseburger arguably crosses that line.

The "starving children in Africa" gambit. Oh, ffs, this has nothing to do with that. The craptastic situations in Africa (or any other places mired in similar situations) are due primarily to local or regional conditions; climate, resources, culture, and the like. Handing over that monster meat thing. or the stuff that went into it, or the time, effort and resources that went into it, to the unfortunates half a world away would have no effect on their long-term situation. Generously sharing the surplus wealth of our overly-affluent society will not improve their lot; it will only enable them to continue to exist as they do now. Those that give will assuage their "guilt" and continue to consume, while those that receive will consume and make no effort to improve their situation. Whether this is due to genetics or memetics is open to endless debate that occupies time and changes nothing.

Modern Western culture tries stuff and advances, for better or worse, because it can.

Archaic tribal culture tries to hold on to traditional ways, for better or worse, because it can.

For now.
