Yes and no... the average American's life in general is an affront to the fact of that picture. While a 1-ton hamburger is an extreme example of it, it is just a one time event, vs. how we over consume in general every day vs the vast majority of the people on earth. And like 99.99% of us, you and I on a daily basis block that out of your mind.

while you have a valid point, there are a lot of people who donate a lot of money to a plethora of causes foreign and domestic.

anyone suffering from american pig guilt can find a 800 # where they too can send donations by merely turning on the TV for 1/2 hour.

No, it is not a troll post. It is exactly right, and it is pretty disgusting. You know....these things aren't either/or....you don't have to either disavow worldly possessions and join the peace corps, nor go out of your way to prove the world's general impression that we are inconsiderate, callous, clueless, fat-asses. The third option would be to appreciate the things you have while retaining some farking dignity and consideration for those less fortunate than you. How much did it cost to make this.....thing?

America has some great ideas and good intentions for the world, but man, we are just fundamentally flawed in some way. I can't explain it exactly except to give examples- our religion of consumerism, our infatuation with celebrity.....the fact that we have more than 200 bases in 80 countries.....and a higher per capita incarceration rate than anyone but the most totalitarian regimes.....weekly mass shootings....etc etc etc.

We are fat, violent, and corrupt. Like Rome before the fall. Most of the world now sees us as a joke if not an enemy, and these days it seems like we are going out of our way to prove them right.

/end rant.

That's the thing about a free society, individuals are free to do stupid shiat. It does not mean the country as a whole is as you described. The U.S. gives more to those starving kids than any other country. If everything we did somehow had to pass judgement and not be offensive to all the poor and unfortunate people in the world today, we'd be a pretty sad country.

...and that cheeseburger, no matter how large it is, is not going to save Africa

These records are almost the stupidest crap of all time. Next year someone will make one bigger that looks even less like a hamburger. The only record worse is stuff like "800 people did this all at the same time" and groups constantly getting bigger.

Oh my gosh, you were one of 2,000 people to stand outside on one leg while singing the theme song to Laverne and Shirley, GOOD FOR YOU!

Fair enough. It's an extreme example, obviously. Though it's not hard to come up with lots of extreme examples....

However, it would be wrong to say that only a small portion of our society is ignorant and indifferent. Since June of last year, over 50,000 people have been killed and 650,000 displaced from Sudan's South Kordofan. How many Americans care, or have even heard of it? Would you guess it draws more or less interest and publicity than Here Comes Honey-Boo-Boo?

People in Africa are starving because they (as a society) are too stupid and/or corrupt to feed themselves. Look at different societies throughout world history and what they have accomplished. Look at the incredible architecture found in other societies and then look at the mud huts in Africa. Even with decades of assistance from the rest of the world, Africa is still a shiathole. That will never change as long as there are still Africans there.

I agree with you there. People in this country don't have a clue, or care to. If the shiat ever hit the fan in this country, and people had to live without their daily dose of stupid shows on tv, or Internet BS like Facebook and others, they'd never make it.

/ignorance is bliss I guess

No, because if we made that monstrosity for those kids, some warlord would swoop in and eradicate them to eat it for themselves.
