Props to the police for doing the low impact raid. They could have gone all SWAT and busted down the door, but they made it easy on themselves and everyone else by just ringing the doorbell.

Make no sound, tip-toe across the floor. If he hears, he'll knock all day. I'll be trapped, and here I'll have to stay.

The Portland Police have been doing a decent job of getting away from being trigger happy after a few high profile lawsuits against them. For a department of 1000+ officers they're pretty damn good.

Yeah, good stuff. Except the fact that this is in Oregon [liberal stronghold (I am very liberal socially)], so we'll see a similar post in about a month involving the same guy.

There have been studies that show that, on average, police who fire their gun have 3 time the average amount of complaints/disciplinary actions. Now, I'm all for judging most shootings by police as 'good', but even I'll admit that generally speaking, having to shoot in the first place means the police officer didn't do the best job possible.

There are stories in the old west about a single Marshall riding out to a gang of bandits and getting the dozen of the to surrender without a shot fired, and ride back to be tried/incarcerated unshackled. He apparently did that stuff all the time. As far as I'm concerned, that dude should be the subject of tall tales, except that his real actions were crazy enough without exaggeration. He's a paragon of a police officer.

There are lots of good and bad police officers; most are mediocre. Sometimes you just don't get the dude with the skills to successfully talk criminal X down and things go fubar. Sometimes there just isn't time, sometimes the individual is just too crazy/dangerous. But on average a good officer won't have to fire their service weapon in the line of duty at all.

A *GOOD* officer would have been able to talk down the Branch Davidians at Waco.
