Why even bother at this point?

Firing Bobby Valentine will satiate the fans, but won't actually fix what's wrong with the team. Getting rid of Beckett helped, but they may not crack 80 wins this season. Next season could be just as bad. You think a different manager is going to be a complete 180? That will be 3 different managers in three consecutive seasons, all ending in possibly the same way. What is the FO going to do if a new manager fails to right the ship? Fire him and put someone new at the helm for 2014? This isn't Goldilocks and the Three Bears, here. You can't keep hiring and firing managers until you find one that the team won't run roughshod all over. Tell the overpaid pussies to deal with whoever the FO hires or they can find somewhere else to play.

Or not.  I figure he will ride out the season, not sure about the second year of the contract.  I imagine a few more players will go in the off season.  There are not a lot of magerial options out there right now unless they get creative.  As for this was a planned trip, yeah right, there is nothing you can believe out of this F.O..

I will say that the last few times I have seen Valentine interviewed he has looked like he can see the writing is on the wall.  Instead of his usual bluster.  Still, I think it is a 50/50 chance he will be here next year.

Seattle is really nice this time of year. They might just have wanted to come out and enjoy themselves.

// Why subject Seattle to this 3 ring dysfunctional circus? Typical of a masshole though, wherever they travel to, its always all about them.

Valentine's not the problem.

The problem is that all your starting pitchers suck this year. Lester and Buccholz weren't supposed to suck. But they do.

Yeah, there's a month left. Only way it makes sense is if they have someone in house that they want to try out, but don't want to commit to.

I have a feeling Dusty Baker may be up for the job since the Reds haven't seemed to talk to him about a new contract.

Dear Red Sox ownership:

Please don't do this. We'll have to cover other MLB teams like Pittsburgh, Angels, possibly LA. Or even Baltimore. Hell, Cincinnati is tied for the most wins in MLB, period (82).

And both the owner and GM have said that they are NOT heading west to fire Bobby, and that the trip was planned a month ago... but don't let that stop the conspiracies.

What's the status of Farrell's contract with the Blue Jays? He might do alright in Boston.

I don't think there's a single way to fix the team. Just putting in a new manager isn't going to suddenly fix things. Francona was great, and we still ended up with the end of last season going like it did. At this point, I wouldn't mind the Sox just bringing in a retired player from the team to mange them for a year. They couldn't get much worse, yet it might help the morale of the team. Also, they need to hire Varitek as pitching coach. Whoever they have now isn't doing any good, and Tek has shown that he can get great performances out of the pitching staff.

I couldn't agree more.  But I don't think it is likely, unfortunately.  I would love to see Tek in a Sox uniform again.

Has he stated what his plans are since retiring? He always struck me as a guy that would end up coaching in some capacity after his playing career was over.

No but as the Sox got rid of him, the F.O. said they wanted him in some capicity in the future. As I recall.

I would love to see Tek coach, not sure how committed to the game he is for the salary a coach makes.  Life back on the road for virtually nothing in MLB terms.

I lost Val when he did those bogus commercials with that charlatan Jordon's Furniture pony tail dude.

He doesn't have any credibility with the fans because he doesn't look like he's taking anything seriously.

Also his own show on NESN and the NYC radio gig.  Bobby run the team, get off the media. But that is Bobby V..  We replaced Manny being Manny with Bobby being Bobby.

I really have no opinion of him, I prefered Francona, but it is what it is.  Lots of flawed pieces from top to bottom.  Add to that the injuries and the fact that 1/2 the team are call ups, not really a suprise.

THIS. Some friends of mine back home who work in the Cleveland sports scene said that ESPN bosses got out the hari-kari knives when Cleveland and Miami went at it in '97. They loathe the idea of small market teams making it to the Series.

Given the situation he was coming into, I think the Sox fans wanted to see a Belichick like skipper being filmed pre-game looking somber and carrying a clip board.

I don't have any qualms with his managing style per se but the New Eng fans want him out.

The red sox created their own drama. Now if they can somehow infect the yankees, then I'd say it was a banner year.

Banner - not to be confused with pennant.

Given the situation he was getting into, the Sox fans would have been unhappy regardless. Everybody was still pissed about how the team treated Francona on his way out.

The right skipper could've won over fans and just made the Sox brain trust look like asssholes w/ how they treated Franconia.

A sox fan has a short memory if their sox are doing well.

High in Boston, 72. High in Seattle, 72. No rain either place.

I'd trade Labor Day in Dallas with either of those. Currently 100F and they're spraying for Mosquitos from the air.

Pretty sure Generation D was being serious about seattle weather in september, we normally get a nice indian summer, hell we've had 40 days without rain and none in the forecast.

Any manager who's worth a shiat would not want to come in & manage this bunch. It all started to go wrong for the Sox when they decided marketing would attract more fans that hard line baseball. Plus the Boston sports media loves to bang the B's nest.

Pressed for comment, John Henry said that this was not the time to contemplate major changes to the structure of the Red Sox organization, and that furthermore, he was a steel drivin' man, oh Lawd! John Henry was a steel drivin' man, Red Sox sources confirmed.

And to think it was just in 2011 that those Red Sox were declared the Best Team Ever, even before the season started. And actually I wouldn't care if it's three different managers in three years, because Valentine has shown he has a tin ear for clubhouse politics and he just seems to be out of his depth in Boston. When you see Dan Shaunessy write his column trashing Valentine (just like he did for Nomar, Tito, etc.) then you'll know that Bobby V is about to be fired.

I'm a Sox fan and I haven't a clue. I was as surprised to see it here as you. If they had fired him, definitely main page material. Until then, keep it on the Sports tab.

Waive every current player on the team, bring up any and all decent prospects from the minors, and re-hire this guy:

It may take a while, but problem ultimately solved.

Valentine looks like he's phoned it in these days with some of his decisions.

Between all the injuries, underachieving players, and guys who just don't give a fark, this team is an unlikeable and unwatchable bunch of losers. A team that claims to be on par with the Yankees needs to be stable, and all of the players need to be on the same page. Now I only hope to see Aceves have another tantrum, because that' the only interesting thing to watch.

Last year was a mess, so they fire Tito, who lost the clubhouse, and hire Valentine, and then take away his authority. They probably won't fire Valentine now because it would actually be doing him a favor.

This Red Sox is like a tumor that has metastasized to all points in the body. It's going to take an awful lot to fix this mess, and it's likely to get worse before it gets better.
