Dude, it's a cultural thing, and nobody had a problem with it. Even the Daily Fail was able to control itself.

He just didn't want to get a raging Iranian boner right there in front of the whole world.

Looks like he was being perfectly respectful. By the way, the crowds look amazing at the Paralympic Games. wtg, Britain.

This. He was more or less bowing. He clearly meant no disrespect.

Disrespect would have been to refuse to have the medal awarded by her...

Besides, no matter his beliefs, as mentioned in TFA, if he had shaken hands, the state run Iranian press would have thrown a shiatstorm

Nothing to see here except a little glimpse into different cultures thrown together on an international state.

so many layers to this......England should have known they shouldn't have sent a woman to do that. secondly, he handles it relatively well. he didn't turn his back on her or gesticulate like, "how dare they do this to me!" thirdly, had that been me, i would have tickled her tonsils with my tongue and had two handfuls of ass.

And titty.

Yeah, a small bow out of respect that she is part of the royal family is enough. Iran doesn't raise a fuss. Kate doesn't get offended. Everyone moves on.

I can't believe I'm on Fark... of course, this isn't the Politics Tab, but still.

So, the basic takeaway from this is .. Huh, so that happened.

Ummmmm...

Why?

Really, why?

You want to not let any women award medals if there is a single competitor who comes from a culture who might have a problem with it, or has a cultural rule not to touch?

Cause that is what you are suggesting.

Gee, generally the Iranians direct their Olympic/Paralympic douchiness towards Israelis.

As long as it is a choice based on the culture of Iran and not a law imposed by the theocracy i am okay with this.

OK, so scrolling down past the Duchess Crisis du jour, I see this:

The Ukrainian athlete who was ordered to give back her discus gold medal because of a scoring blunder did not turn up to the rearranged ceremony at the Olympic Stadium this morning.
...
She admitted yesterday she was 'very, very angry' after losing her gold in the F35/36 class, with organisers announcing the wrong medals had been awarded. Points rather than distance determined the final standings in the combined-class event.

Are the Judges "special", too?

Are the judges paralyzed? Some of them, but I don't see how that would affect them mentally.

Oh, wait. You don't know the difference between Paralympics and Special Olympics.

Well, normally a score of potato would be good enough for gold...

This is exactly how the GOP expected Obama to act when he met various foreign dignitaries. So at least we know the knuckle draggers will be sitting this thread out.

What was his disability? It doesn't list it on the olympic profile page, wikipedia, etc. Not that it really matters, just curious. If the guy had mental issues, it's kind of silly to even bring this up.

He was competing in the F42 category which is defined as:

"F42 -- Includes single above-knee amputation, double above-knee amputations, and athletes with combined arm/leg amputations. It may also include athletes with severe problems when walking, such as impairments in one leg from polio."

I guess it shouldn't surprise me to see everyone defending Islam where if it were a Christian religious athlete up there refusing to shake hands everyone in Fark would be screaming "Seeeee? Backwards farking religious nutbags!!!!!"

Double standards, only for some.

So is it culture or an oppressive government that disallows this?

You can not honestly say one way or the other.

Point is still valid, they only refuse to shake hands because of their constant disrespect of women. Its why women can't go out alone and why they are limited in their studies.

Again, double standards.

It looks like the organizers were far too respectful of his barbaric medieval religion. They should have half-naked women presenting medals at all ceremonies, so that pathetic primitive douchebags like him can't show up and claim their medals.

Yes I get it, when the mocking is against Christianity and its customs they are considered narrow minded but if its the religion of people that hate it then their customs of keeping women as second class citizens must be accepted. To say nothing of their killing of any man or woman accused of being gay.

If Fark had an article about a baptist preacher saving a houseful of orphans, the puppies and kittens who had a kennel next door while donating most of his pay to the battered women's shelter the first few posts would be, who cares? He still preaches about a religion that hates and Islam hates more than any other religion yet everyone just says "its his culture" without acknowledging its a culture that subjugates women.

Example to what I have been saying just mocking instead of attacking as you would other religions.

That's right. If the athelete is from the middle east don't send a Jew or a woman to present the medals. How hard is that to understand. Remember we have to be sensitive to their culture and not ask them to pull their heads out of their arses and join the 21st century!

Matisyahu won't allow women to touch him either. Let's get some manufactured outrage against the jews going.

Personally I think everyone thats a fundamentalist is teh ghey. Don't be afraid of what women can do to your tiny boner. Give in to it and eventually you won't be such an uptight assclown.
