I hate Facebook as much as the other basement dwellers here, but I don't see much difference between this and states that offer online registration.

wademh: I'm all for making voter registration easy but via facebook? That's more like an illiteracy test.

This.

Since voting requires one to be of-age to do so, and facebook allows one to lie about their age, this would require that facebook have access to your personal information , such as ssn, to verify that you are a valid voter.

Considering they aren't even trustworthy enough to not track which sites you access via the "like this" feature and your browser cookies, it would be unthinkable to grant them access to anything as important as legal documentation relating to your person.

Was this snark? The state already allows on-line registration. All this is is another way to get the word out. Facebook, in this case, is nothing more than TV/Radio/email.

Let's just be clear here:

Registration =/= Voting

every year in every state thousands of registrations are thrown out. Just because you register Micky Mouse to vote doesn't mean that cartoon character gets to walk into the voting boot. Walt Disney Corporation doesn't need him too any way. They are rich and what they have is better than a vote: money.

RTFA, you need to give your drivers license number when you register. You could be registering from the facebook account of Weedlord Bonerhitler himself, but you still have to give your real name and ID verification when you register.

Facebook has done nothing to make me feel comfortable that any of my data is protected. And they continually put in more crap to make it harder to manage security around the data. Entering a DL through FB == It's out there, and it WILL get compromised and it WILL get disseminated at some point. At least state sites require SSL processing, and have discrete databases, which are generally not worth cracking. Facebook is information galore. It stores everything, relates it to users, and TA DA!

*shudder* People are practically begging to give Facebook data. It's scary. I think too many places are desperate to be trendy that they don't think, and do stupid things, like this.

I am already registered but thought I'd take a look at it to see what it looked like and confirm my registration. It says "Site under maintenance." Pretty much when Nevada tried to do something high-tech, that's kind of expected.

Pennsylvania has websites that are closed on weekends (not down for maintenance; closed). It's pretty much par for the course, state-website-wise.

That said, how is this any less secure or more abusable than someone filling out forms for people on the sidewalk? I mean, it would be utterly absurd to throw a fit about in-person registration drives. No self-respecting party would ever try to shut down an organization for doing that, right guys? ...Guys?

Problem? The Government can't do anything right and the free market does everything better. So its clearly a great idea to let Facebook handle all our voter registration from now on.

In fact, lets have Facebook replace all the polling stations. We can all just vote online with them. The poor can just use the internet at the public library.
