It's okay if Ryan lies about and or exaggerates every single thing because Biden exaggerated once.

He's exaggerated millions of times.

Ah, so he's the anti-Obama: campaigning solely on things he hasn't accomplished and the media refuses to hold him accountable as opposed to the media demanding answers on things never promised while ignoring actual accomplishments. He DOES make sense as the VP pick!

Knew "this" guy in high school. Had a sweet drag racing car that was perpetually in the shop.

Paul Ryan's lies say more about the people who will vote for him than they do about Ryan himself.

Ryan saw an opportunity. The conservatives needed a smart, econ-savvy deficit hawk. Ryan isn't any of those things, but Republicans haven't seen one of them ever, so all he had to do was pretend to be one and say he was one and BAM instant cred.

Its magical.

The point I'm wondering is WHY Romney and Ryan are lying like that. This is an incredibly stupid thing to lie about, yet they go about it like nobody will care. Their Base may not, but everybody else isn't that stupid. The Republicans aren't running just against Obama, they're running against all of the shiat they've done (or in their Base's case, NOT done) for the last twelve years. You won't get anybody but a deluded Republican diehard to believe that gas prices shot up under Obama (they've, in fact, been lower than the Bush era) or that life suddenly went to shiat in January 2009. There's a point of twisting the truth and misinterpretation and outright insulting people's intelligence. And since I'm not a Republican troll that likes to do the 'everybody is stupid so this shouldn't offend you' bullshiat, the answer is 'because the Republicans, at long last, are not afraid of masking their contempt for everybody who isn't in their shiatty little club.'

If Ryan is lying about this shiat, he's lying about other shiat. And that's probably why the press is going after Romney's campaign: if they're lying about this, what are they hiding? We've got two months to figure it out. And I'm damn sure Obama already knows and is waiting four weeks to reveal it.

Ryan's whole image is fake
His "working's man cred" is along the lines of a summer job he had in High School flipping burgers.
His biggest accomplishment that has led to his financial success is marrying a rich woman.
The pure black girl he dated wound up spending half a year in prison for financial crimes.

LarryDan43: It's okay if Ryan lies about and or exaggerates every single thing because Biden exaggerated once.

And Al Gore-well, he told the truth but we were able to distort what he was saying enough that e then we able to brand him a liar, so because he kinda in our mind lied, and that was terrible character defect, it makes it totally okay for Ryan to make shiat up.

there are two things about this marathon lie that really disturb me

1) it's pointless and easily detected. if you are going to be a liar you need to be a better one than that. Lie about the important shiat not the utterly pointless biographical details

2) His BROTHER is the marathon runner who has actually accomplished what Ryan only claims. I find it a little telling that being a congressman and a VP candidate isn't enough to cool his sibling rivalry. He actually has to claim his brother's minor accomplishments as his own as well.

Guntram Shatterhand: The point I'm wondering is WHY Romney and Ryan are lying like that.

For us underachievers lying is the only way to promote ourselves. For example I've been running three hour marathons, sailing the seven seas and rescuing polar bears on my summer vacation and I've invested in a 100 million dollar venture. Much better than: this summer tried new kind of potato chips while watching reruns of American Idol and I'm still hoping to win the lottery.

And the media will never report when Ryan or Romney lie. Instead the reports will be framed as "The Obama campaign alleges that Ryan lied about..." because heaven forbid someone's feelings get hurt.

Modern journalists are scum.

Lies simply are not scandalous or galvanizing in the media. Accusations are, but not from news. You need other candidates and prominent political figures to call someone out, and what this gives you is a thousand experts all waxing nonsensical about tangential topics or doing mental gymnastics. Those things get people watching, which is f*cking ridiculous.

The thing about Ryan is: he thinks he's John Galt. Seriously.

Ryan merely plays the game many politicians play. You develop a proposal, include certain assumptions, and then have CBO do a cost analysis, knowing full well that in doing their analysis CBO must use your assumptions without commenting on the likelihood of your assumptions becoming reality. Voila! Your plan works. Of course those inside the Beltway know it's a farce and they know the game you are playing. After all they play the same game. But you've fooled the rubes outside the Beltway who will be voting.

No he doesn't. He wishes he was, but deep down he knows. That's the power of all Republicans: they think they got it locked up, that reality depends on the consistency of their beliefs. Therefore, if he believes it with all honesty, it will be true. But deep down they know it's bullshiat, and that's why they're so angry all the time and looking for things in the shadows. They're always on the cusp of being really found out, and it slowly drives them mad.

Or, in Ryan's case, into looking like Gollum.

Two things:

1) They probably do think that no one cares. And for the vast majority of the people that will be voting against Obama for them, that is in fact the case.
2) The GOP in general is in severe denial of the existence of GW Bush. How many Republicans do you know that will admit to having voted for him? The policies that Romney and Ryan are espousing are Bush 43 redux - hell, a lot of the advisers on Romney's campaign worked in GW Bush's administration. But the only people that are making that link are Democrats (why not be proud of W's policies?)
