It all depends on if the firefighters used gasoline to put the fire out or not...

Kind of dumb to question the skills and intentions of the firefighters.

Even dumber to not question if what a politician is doing is actually in your best interest...

Firefighters are a socialist conspiracy to take over America, didn't you know? They're evil.

I know we needed to have more tax cuts and deregulation for the job creators, and to eliminate all forms of social spending other then subsidies to struggling industries who have only been able to make record profits.

And there you go. The firefighters put out the fire and you imagine that they were using gasoline. The Real Muricans who were seen pouring gasoline and lighting matches an hour ago told you so. They also told you that the firefighters showed up before the fire started and set the fire. Or wait a minute. It wasn't these firefighters, maybe, but it was the firefighters who were on the job in the 1970s. See, they forced you to allow some social inferiors to live in your basement free of charge, and you know how social inferiors are, with their crack pipes and lighters, and so a fire smoldered in your basement for 35 years, and it was only until just after some Real Muricans were seen pouring gasoline and lighting matches that this smoldering 35-year-old fire burst out and destroyed your house.

Yeah that's the ticket.

The 'gasoline' extension of the analogy is a bit over the top and... inflammatory (COMEDY!). However, it's worth noting that firefighters, as a rule, are not known for staggering levels of deceit and corruption. If a group of politicians showed up with buckets and hoses to put out my burning house, I probably *would* question their intentions, not to mention their competence (and probably inspect their gear, to boot).

/neither side is proposing significant tax increases on the middle class (sorry, but that's where the revenue is)
//neither side is proposing significant enough cuts to military spending
///both sides are bad, vote nihilism

Did the firefighters borrow 5,000,000,000,000 to put out the fire?
What shape was the house in after the fire? Would it have been better to just start from scratch instead of try to build around a burnt out house?

Suppose your house is on fire and the firefighters race to the scene. They set up their hoses and start spraying water on the blaze as quickly as possible. After the fire is put out, the courageous news reporter on the scene asks the chief firefighter, "is the house in better shape than when you got here?"

At which point the Chief says "We did what we had to do to put the fire out. It's now up to you to hire a competent contractor to work with the insurer to get the house back to pre-loss condition."

Unfortunately, we hired an ambulance chaser contractor in chief who set the house back on fire. It's time to hire someone who knows what they're doing.

The willfully ignorant are the ones circle jerking around this president who did nothing good for the economy, just tried to exploit the situation for his desire to change society. Pretty damned selfish way to go about it and people are continuing to suffer from George Bush III's manipulation of an already failed market.

Troll headline is trolling. It's not asking if you're better off than before the fire, it's asking if you're better off than before the fire department showed up.
I mean, firefighters show up, your house is all ablaze in pretty flames. They leave, and it's full of ash, everything's charred, water and smoke damage everywhere.

The message is not so much that such apathy would be bad for democracy, but that it would be bad for Obama.

The erosion of our confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and the political fabric of America. The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence.

Wouldn't the analogy be more accurate if you asked the arsonist who set the fire am I better of now that it has burned, then the fireman?

Might it be better to remember who and what caused the fire in the first place, rather than who and how it was put out?
