systematic voter suppression is just the Republican party's way of protecting you from big government, because what's more governmenty than letting citizens participate in it.

I am wondering if there is some legal way to prevent this purge. Does anyone have any ideas?

HELLYEAH I do!! Get a shiatload of fertilizer and a barrel of diesel, then...oh, legal...

Well, call the ACLU or some other commie-lib people that actually think eligible voters should be able to, y'know, vote. E-mail everyone you know, call people, etc, tell them where to go and what to do to re-register or whatever, and have them do the same.

I'm saying that, unless you have another source, all we know is there an unconfirmed report by someone claiming to have been visited by the Obama campaign, and she knows that of the supposed 20000 purged voters, two were Democrats, in a state with a Democrat governor and lieutenant governor, and she's already concluded that the evil Republicans are behind it. Very much this. There's going to be a lot of shady business going on nationwide, and a lot of people who would rather you just not vote. I don't know about the rest of the country, but in PA, be sure to have a government-issued ID with a photo and an expiration date. They'll be more than happy to turn you away if you don't have one.

The Secretary of State is the election official in CO. He is a Republican. So partisan one, that after he was elected, he announced he was going to continue working at his law firm (which was the CO election law firm for the GOP) during evenings and weekends.

This email is not exactly factually accurate, but Scott Gessler has been working very hard to suppress the independent and Dem vote here. Most of his efforts have been fruitless when they are statewide or flat out ignored by designated election officials on the county level. But he's doing his best.

And hey, he's put in hundreds of thousands of dollars and countless man hours and he has found 6 illegal immigrants who voted. Maybe. Except that maybe he hasn't.

You really have to think about the thought processes going on in the people who frothed over the Acorn shiat.

Either you have an organization that takes every application for voter registration and turns them in flagging the ones they think is fraudulent, which Acorn did.

OR.

You have an organization that looks at every voter registration, picks out ones they think are fraudulent (or perhaps registering for the other party) and throws those away, never to be turned in.

Which is worse?

One of my friends had just registered over in Colorado. He said they're basically out in force (especially when Obama spoke in Boulder yesterday). And it's not like you're made to register Democrat. You can still be any party you want.

Funny how Obama is trying to help people register while the GOP is excluding people via Voter ID laws to stop the massive voter fraud (massive meaning tens of people that were caught for it years ago).

2012-09-03 12:37:09 PM
For those who may be suspicious of an anonymous post in a DailyKos diary, there are other sources for the Colorado purge:

The Associated Press (published in the Austin Statesman): http://www.statesman.com/news/nation/colorado-voter-purge-finds-many-s uspected-ineligible-voters-2445872.html

Tara Culp-Ressler, ThinkProgress.org: http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2012/08/30/774461/colorado-voter-purg e-finds-us-citizens/

Ressler mentiones these tid-bits:

"Although Gessler denies his attempted voter purge has any political motivation, about 40 percent of his letters were sent to registered Democrats, while only 13 percent went to Republicans. Voter suppression tactics, such as Gov. Rick Scott's (R-FL) failed voter purge in Florida, do tend to disproportionately target Democrat and Latino voters.

Despite the fact that Republican lawmakers across the country have been pursuing similarly aggressive strategies to tamp down "voter fraud" in their states, the only real threat to democracy is the voter suppression they perpetrate under the guise of stopping it. When pressed on the issue, even the authors and biggest proponents of stringent voter ID laws cannot cite examples of in-person voter impersonation. This is probably due to the fact that a person is more likely to be struck by lightning than commit voter fraud."

I had a friend who worked for ACORN. Yep, every single voter registration form was counted. If someone turned in 7 and was given 20, there better be 13 blank ones turned in too. Legally, they had to turn in even stupid nonsense - but on the plus side, they got many, many people registered who simply wouldn't have otherwise. One trip they did IIRC was to a low income senior complex - young people, yeah, often laziness. But elderly people who want to vote (hey, better late than never) and don't have easy or any internet access, can't get out to the secretary of state, etc.. they provided a *damn* good service.

On the flip side, a coworker of mine registered to vote on her college campus. Found out on election day that she wasn't actually registered.

I'm surprised more conservative groups don't do that sort of thing more often, especially during freshmen events week stuff. Be the star of your Young Republican group! Just make sure not to get your "toss" and "submit" piles mixed up!

In tune with GitOffAMyLawn, my name had been purged before the recall primary. I had not moved in 7 years, hence the same polling place/district, and had voted at every election during that time. I was turned away and had to go home, print out a utility bill between 30 and 90 days old, come back, and re-register before I could vote. And the WI GOP wants to do away with same day registration, which would have meant I could not have voted at all.

StreetlightInTheGhetto: Which, of course, is the whole damn point of the certification process...

The funny thing about that was the courts laid out that burden of proof is on proving the names are false. Whenever we found a duplicate, or an obviously fake name we would document the petition number and line, and report it as fraudulent to central so that they didn't count it. If something was suspicious we flagged it as suspicious and reported it. But when these people signed bullshiat names just so they would be found they didn't think their plan through, since we were under no obligation to make sure it was legit, and "their team" would have to spend their resources finding it.

One example I marked as fraudulent, that wasn't counted:
Name: Worthless Hippie,
Address: 666 Get a Job Lane,
City: Fark You

One example marked as suspicious: Minnie Mouse. Minnie is a legit first name, and Mouse is a legit last name. The address the provided showed up within the city listed. Suspicious? Yes. Known fraudulent? No. Would most people with the last name "Mouse" name their daughter "Minnie." Most wouldn't. Could Minnie grow up and marry a man named "James Mouse" and take his last name? Absolutely.

That happens a lot, particularly on college campuses for some reason. It's blatant fraud and probably 90% of the time, it's committed by Republicans. But very rarely a Democrat will do it too, so both sides are equally bad.

IIRC: what brought down McCotter's campaign is that his staffers took a single proper nominating petition and copied it a few hundred times. They then turned in these copies saying that they had the requisite number of signatures to put his name on the ballot. McCotter, like him or not, was completely in the dark (so he says) about all this.

His staffers get free room and board for a few months or so, McCotter gets to spend more time with his family.
