I'm totally sure that harried moms whose kid is done with his half-eaten ice cream cone will totally put it in her purse when they're getting onto the train.

Totally.

This operation can in no way have less than stellar results. Surely the organization whose crown jewel is only eighty years behind schedule will produce results which will not be facepalm-inducing.

Yeah but at the same time they're raising toll by $.25 per ride and giving you a 9.π% return every time your card has between $1.27 and $2.14 left on it.

So it's win-win

FTFA: The transportation authority removes 14,000 tons of trash from the subway annually, it said. A spokeswoman for the city's Sanitation Department said the reduction in trash at the two pilot locations had not burdened its collection operations at street level. "Sanitation has monitored these two locations and there has been no negative impact," the spokeswoman said.

The riders are not taking it home, they are just distributing it in a way that is not negatively affect the city's sanitation department..... yet. If the transportation authority promotes this program for all it's stations it will be noticed...... no money saved.... the problem was just moved around into someone else's department.

At Eighth Street, a rider wrote, in blue ink, "stupidest idea ever," before apparently being bested by a traveler with black ink, who crossed out the first word.

"Idea ever"? Wat?

That makes a hell of a lot more sense than getting rid of garbage cans to make the stations cleaner. That's like making a public restroom cleaner by removing the toilets.

Let's be honest here -- the only reason MTA's removing the trash cans is the unionized "cleaners" don't clean worth a damn. Yes, there's a lot of traffic, but I've never seen a filthier subway system than NYCs.

Nearby, in a narrow alcove between a pay phone kiosk and a vertical beam, riders appeared to have fashioned a rogue receptacle. Detritus piled about three feet high - a mélange of crushed energy drink cans; bottles of water and, in at least one case, vodka; mounds of wrappers and paper cups; and what appeared to have once been a white T-shirt.

I'm simply saying that life, uh... finds a way.

In Philly, the 13th Street subway station of SEPTA (Slow Expensive Poor Transportation Anomily) was a public restroom. I remember in Paris, trash bins were either removed or welded shut because terrorists placed nail bombs in them. This was done in the Metro stations and on the streets of the city. Removing the bins in subway stations will cause people to put trash where ever they can- in the tube cars, for example.

This has got to be the most retarded idea I've heard of. It's right up there with "if we don't put ashtrays near the building, people won't smoke there", when what really happens is people who were smoking as they approach the building throw their butt on the ground, annoying themselves for having nowhere to put it, and the non-smokers for having butts all over the sidewalk.

/Non-smoker just for the record.

I think this is probably true, but I actually salute the MTA for experimenting with the idea. It could be that over time if prople think they won't have a place to throw away their junk they won't bring it down the steps in the first place. Again, I think probably not but it's pretty easy to reverse the decision here if it turns out wrong. Yay for trying new things, I say.

But that's exactly the idea. There;s a garbage can outside of every subway station in the city. It's retarded to remove ashtrays from building entrances, but moving then from the door to 30 feet away works nicely, at least from the experience of buildings where I've seen it done.

It's just like the state parks removing their garbage cans and adopting the "carry-in, carry-out" policy. Assholes just leave their trash everywhere instead.

Clearly, we should kill all of those doctors.

JackalRabbit: getting rid of trashcans to stop trash is like getting rid of abortion to get rid of legitimate rape.

Double grins...

I don't know how it is in NYC, but in civilized parts of the world making it easy to dispose of trash means people use the receptacles. I've been given anecdote that in Indianapolis, after the Indy 500 it would take weeks to clean up. People were worried about the same trash problems when NASCAR was going to start doing their Brickyard race. NASCAR brought thousands of extra trashcans which they emptied frequently and the anecdote goes it took three days to gather up all the trash cans.

If you're worried about bombs then keep the openings small. Then the largest bomb is a few inches across. You will never eliminate bomb threats in crowded commuter passages but it's pretty easy to keep people from dropping backpack bombs into the trash cans.

2012-09-03 01:57:09 AM
just got back from burning man - no trashcans and very little trash on the ground. Too bad most people can't be like burners.

Well, to be fair, the station garbage cans just provide food for rats.

2012-09-03 02:06:28 AM
Well, the floors have to be mopped and swept anyways, might as well take out the trashcans and have the brooms sweep up the trash instead of having the janitors empty trashcans AND clean the floors.

They exist. I work at a shopping center on a military institution. One of the major hurdles is force protection. We need to implement bomb proof trash cans.

And I want to bomb London flat because of it. Was the most annoying thing ever. If I stopped in to buy a water in a shop, I was wedded to that damn bottle for the rest of the day. I brought along a messenger bag to carry books and stuff in - and it spent most of its time as my personal trashcan. It was the farking IRA; the most piss-poor piss-ant excuse for a terrorist organization ever. Considering the Mayor of London thought the 1666 fire was perfectly okay, and Churchill let the Germans bomb Coventry for shiats and giggles, why, o why couldn't they let some retarded Irishmen (sorry: more retarded than usual Irishmen) play improvisational civic planners, and let me throw my trash away in a perfectly acceptable manner?

I never figured out why smokers are such pussies about the butts. You just had it in your mouth and were sucking on it. You already stink. Putting it out on the sole of your shoe and then pocketing it until you reach a trash bin is not a problem.

Or the people who smoke in their car but don't use the ashtray. Retards.

yeah , this bound to fail the subway platforms are gonna look like a landfill, it will start slow a few people with put trash under a bench or in an out of the way corner and a few more will do the same thinking no one will notice just a little more trash and little by little over the course of a day it will pile up.

they will end up spending more on labor to pick the stuff up than they save on disposal cost from the small amount of trash that does not get dumped on the platform .

been a while since i've seen an ashtray in a vehicle. perhaps it's time you trade. as for the sole of the shoe, in the military we field stripped em. squeeze off the end, then easy to pocket and dispose of later - with even less odor to the pocket.
