My guess is, they were trolling the other protesters and trying to get one of the groups to do something stupid so they could sue.

That said, I bet it would hilarious to watch privileged hipster "anarchist" kids try to get organized well enough to disrupt WBC's protest. The resulting biatchfight would be worth the price of admission.

Have these "free speech zones" been challenged in court? Doesn't seem quite constitutional to force protesters far away from the thing they are trying to protest.

Politics have nothing to do with it, they're professional trolls. They extreme-troll and sue whenever their victim's emotions get the better of them and get them to do something illegal or impinging upon the troll's rights. How does everyone not know this by now?

If baby Hitler was killed, and everything else stayed the same, someone else would have emerged to take his place, after the awful aftermath of WWI. Maybe not in precisely the same way, but it was the Versailles Treaty that paved the way for Nazism. Hitler was just the spokesman.

If you want to change history, kill Josef Goebbels. Without his spin, Hitler never would have survived.

Don't show up to protest when they're expecting you and the people are ideologically fixed.

Now is the time for mini flash-protesting. Small protests everywhere... Start waving signs outside churches reading "JESUS SAID fark THE RICH AND FEED THE POOR" and other targeted protests. Maybe stand on a sidewalk outside a building with a hedge fund with a sign reading "Are you sure you're not scum bags?". Outside grocery stores with signs reading "What's the deal with agricultural subsidies?"

Little protests, slipping bits of doubt into the people day to day. If you attend a protest with a thousand like minded people you don't disseminate the ideas much.

That would explain a lot, really.

There was a short SF story I read quite a long time ago, that described how in the future, we'd developed the means to look back in time, not really travel, but to watch the great geniuses (Newton, Beethoven etc.) and try to fathom why so many of them had become paranoid eccentrics in their old age. At the end, one of the scientists has to shut down the program, when they realize the reason these old geniuses thought they were being watched all the time...is because THEY WERE.

Well, yes and no. Without Hitler, the Nazis would have been Rohmer, the SA and a bunch of drunks in beerhalls in Bavaria. The main competition to the Nazis when they were struggling to power was the German Communist party, and all things considered, we all would be much better off if the Communists had come to power instead of Hitler seizing it and them wiping them (and the rest of his political enemies) out.

Why does everyone seem to think that killing Hitler is the most likely way to prevent WWII? Germany was in a bad way at the end of WWI, and dolchstoßlegende was already blaming the Jews by 1919. If you killed Hitler as a kid, I'd be more surprised if there *weren't* still a WWII. The Holocaust might have been a much smaller pogrom, but it would probably still happen.

No, if you want to prevent WWII, you have to prevent (or at least radically alter the history of) WWI.

Save Archduke Ferdinand. It probably won't stop WWI, but it might delay it for a few years. We might not even recognize the war that it substitutes.

Everyone thinks about fixing things too close to the period of the event. Lot's of points in history you could drop a clue or vaccinate one person or, last option, kill someone.

FUN TURNING POINTS TO SCREW WITH!!! Drop off about 20 horses into one spot of the America's around 500CE.
Spread the idea of using cow pox to vaccinate Europeans before they visit the Americas.
Introduce glass making to China any time before 500CE (they perfected porcelain and stopped)
Sail around the Mediterranean with triangular sails around 400BCE and make 360 degree turns around square sail ships.
Teach the Romans how to make and use good saddles.
Commission Hitler to do his architectural paintings around the world instead of joining the army in WWI.
Install cameras around Jerusalem from 20CE to the destruction of the temple. Send in a forensic pathologist to verify certain deaths and, ahem, other events.

Okay, that last one is for me. There's lots of little places where tossing people a farking clue would have drastically changed history. Imagine if little things were changed long before the even of interest.

And if all else fails, send in a ringer. Replace leaders with deeply trained actors. This would be the course for situations involving people with high probability of being psychopaths.

Why? Lot of traffic on the town green is there? Also why is another persons use of a piece of pavement to walk/drive more important than someones use of it to protest?

I do. But a free speech zone is better than nothing and people will complain when they're gone. Land is increasingly private and areas in which to protest are becoming extinct.

As far as fair use of the land goes, well, feel free to protest and I'll feel free to drive and we'll see who wins.

You're still free to assemble on the town green, when there is one. It's just that not many people choose to do so, largely because they would be easily avoided by people who don't wish to listen to them.

You have a right "peaceably to assemble" but it doesn't entail the right to go wherever you choose, trespass, interfere with the rights of others, etc. For that matter, you have the right to bear arms, but not to bear arms in the airport.

You have a right to use the road. Neither you nor any other citizen has the right to do whatever you wish to do in the road. You may not stand in the road shrieking opinions, waving advertisements, or grilling weenies, but must comply with the the laws your duly elected legislature has established regulating the use of those roads for the benefit of all. The use of the road to drive is in fact more important than the use of the road to express yourself -- where the legislature expresses in its laws that the chief purpose of the road is to enable transport. If you don't like it, you are free to tell your representatives to change the law to accommodate your protests. Evidently too many citizens of Florida like the law the way it is.

They shouldn't be over. The people should be able to congregate wherever they like to voice their displeasure at the government. I can't imagine you're really happy about the government cracking down on free speech and the right to assembly.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

People who are more pissed off at being slightly late for work than they are at what a curtailment on such liberties means for the future should be deported to an island of murderous seals.

Behold, the logic that has lead to the current situation, where those who cannot afford to buy land on which to assemble (and on which to be ignored) are only free to be crushed by the police.

Yes, of course you can assemble! You just don't have anywhere to do it.

Name for me any group of people who have no place to assemble. It would not include the protestors in TFA, for whom a public and visible place of assembly was specifically set aside. Who are these people you are referring to who want to assemble but are denied place to do so? Be specific.

You're not bothered about their lack of a place to assemble, though apparently you are unaware of the fact. You're bothered by the fact they aren't being permitted to assemble in a specific place that you want them be, and that people have no legal right to mill around in. What is the difference between being allowed to protest in the road or in some out-of-the-way place? What you want, though you aren't saying it, is not a right to assemble (which the protestors are happily exercising) but the right to inconvenience and annoy others and better attract attention to yourself, which is the only advantage the road has over the shoulder. The Constitution does not guarantee this right. You have the right to assemble; you don't have the right to impede others. You have the right to speak; you don't have the right to an audience.

Being unavoidable is the only way anyone can get attention these days. Do you think anyone would have gave a fark about Occupy if they had rented a private park ten miles from nowhere and had a campout? It would have been seen as a circle-jerk, and that's all it would have been. Politicians are not listening, and they don't give a damn what the general population thinks, and free speech zone laws are designed to make it easier to ignore them. What the fark would the point of free speech be if the rest of the legal system is designed to ensure that no one ever hears you? The target isn't some private entity or group of civilians- the point is to influence the government, which is supposedly a public entity. What's the difference between the government clamping a hand over your mouth or sticking its fingers in its ears? So, yank 'em out.

You, undoubtedly, will call this whining. Well, whose government is it? "Everyone's"? Sure, act as individuals- if you want only those with money to be heard. Which is, of course, the point. Congratulations, you're a useful idiot of the 1%.
