10 worst?

It would have been much easier for the article writer to combine the whole NuDC fiasco into one big "WORST THING EVER" comment and go write an article about Quantum and Woody and whether Christopher Priest could ever finish the book.

Quantum and Woody blew goats. That's what you are pulling out as an example of 'Comics used to be awesome'?

Someone needs to let their web designer know that putting a tiny little Start Here button at the top of the article is not a great way to entice people to click through your slide show.

I've been reading Green Arrow and Action Comics since the New 52 debuted (I'm a sucker for starting at #1) and I like Green Arrow but don't like Action as much.

I don't like Arrow's new art after they changed around 6 or 7 (it looks like Aeon Flux sketches) but love Actions

And I although I like Arrow's stories, they haven't explained anything in 12 issues (who he is, why he does these things, and they've only given a throw away line about meeting any other superheroes)

Action's stories are all over the place and as a new comic reader, it's jarring.
One issue it's Superman's origin. The next Superman is black and in another dimension.
The next issue it's in the future 1000 years.

Zero Month is next month (That's when they'll go into origin/back story for all the "New" issues)

They jumped right into story arcs... but now that they got the first year under their belt, and know which ones are hanging around the origin comics are on their way for a couple o'months

I was actually looking forward to the new 52. I subscribed to my old favorite from when I was a kid: The Legion of Superheroes.

After about issue 6 of my subscription they send me a mail telling me that they were no longer offering LoSH subscriptions, but that they kindly changed mine to Superman.

To be fair, the one issue of Superman I've read so far was far better written than what turned out to be a quite disappointing rebirth of LoSH, but I was still dumbfounded that they wouldn't even honor my 1 year subscription that I paid for.

I'm not sure how you can do a worst list for the new 52 without devoting a slide to Rob Liefeld's Hawk and Dove.

Reyito: Zero Month is next month

Yeah, I know, but other books (from what I've heard) have touched on backstories. Action even had Krypton's destruction, Jor-el sending out the baby, Zod in the Phantom Zone and even Krypto the dog for crying out loud!

Green Arrow has NOTHING. I mean, I KNOW the backstory, but they haven't explained anything.

Also, and this may be typical for comics, I don't know, Green Arrow will be cornered, no arrows left, bloodied, and 100 guys pointing guns at his head "TO BE CONTINUED" and then next month he's back at HQ with bandages saying "Whew! I was lucky to get out of there!!!"

It may be typical of comics, since I don't know, but if it is, seems pretty lazy to me!

The backstories (which was a huge blunder in my opinion as well) are going to be addressed in upcoming Zero Issues.

After the fact, granted...but better late than never?

That's Grant Morrison for you. Sometimes the drug-filled insanity that he vomits onto the page sorta works, other times it's completely indecipherable.

The other thing I didn't like about Action was in the first couple of issues he was "Aw shucks" farmboy who was just understanding his powers.
Didn't have the outfit yet, can't fly, didn't even know he could breath in outer space (and ended up wearing a spacesuit). Very "Smallville".
And he was a kinda a dick, which I liked! He was just catching bad guys and wasn't the god like boy scout!

Then a few issues in he gets the suit, gets all preachy again and turns into "I am the defender of the planet Earth!" (where as to issues ago you were wearing work boots and didn't know you were an alien!)

Also, they built up a storyline over the the last several issues about Nimrod the Hunter who was this great hunter and was going to stalk and kill Superman and then he just walks up to him and 'pew pew pew' "I can't kill Superman!?!?!" and that was it!

And don't get me started on Superman killing off Clark Kent! I mean, I know it won't stick or anything (since he's still Clark Kent in Superman Comics) but there's a lot I just .... don't get.

Green Arrow is a more cohesive story

The New 52 has given us Lemire's Animal Man and Snyder's Swamp Thing, as well as some other amazing non-cape books like Demon Knights (BUY IT, damn it, if that book ends I'm going to cry) so it hasn't all been a total failure.

I'm generally not a big fan of DC's capes but I read some of the big tentpole books for the first 6-8 months like Justice League, Action, Flash, Batman/woman, et al, but aside from the Green Lantern books none have managed to hold my interest so I'm primarily back to Marvel stuff.

LiQuid!: none have managed to hold my interest so I'm primarily back to Marvel stuff.

The only Marvel I read is the new Avengers Assemble, which I got for my kids, it's noticeably geared towards a younger audience, but damn if it isn't fun to read every month!

2012-09-02 10:20:14 PM
Teen Titans 1-9 was a ton of fun. I bought it for my son, but ended up really enjoying it myself
Same with the Flash
Justice League just isn't that good, I keep forcing myself to read it
Green Arrow.....Yea, no
Redhood and the Outlaws is way to forced as well
Green Lantern (all the iterations) started off really strong, but then fell apart
Action started off fun, but then sucked
Superman is still allot of fun
The various Batman titles just jump around from good to crap

IDK, I'd like to give them more time, I honestly can't stand Marvel these days, but its just hard to justify

I was pleasantly surprised that what I would have gone with as the single worst thing was their #5: the absence of Oracle. (That said, Gail Simone is killing it in her writing on Batgirl and I'm very curious as to how it's going to develop.)

2012-09-02 11:55:49 PM
How about Tim Drake allegedly not being an official Robin or Stephanie Brown having completely disappeared or the fact there may not have been a Teen Titans before the present one

Completely unrelated. It looks like it will be similar to 'DC Universe Presents' with a short, unrelated stories a couple times a year. First up is 'Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld'.

I like Batman Incorporated

2012-09-03 02:38:25 AM
I like it just fine, but I guess my tastes haven't changed with the times enough to really get behind it. I like new Batman just fine, but don't like that just as a bunch of crazy great stuff was happening in 2009-11, they did this soft reset and took away that momentum.

I am looking forward to the Sword & Sorcery, picking up Demon Knights and Swamp Thing and such.

But I'm not totally psyched about it anymore. Its lifestyle filler when I'm bored, not core entertainment like it used to be.

Still reading the Green Lantern titles as well as Supergirl. However, the new Superman just leaves me cold and haven't quite decided if I like The Flash or not. I feel the New 52 just cut me loose as a long time customer and I'm about ready to walk away.
I do have a subscription for the new Captain Marvel (by Marvel Comics, naturally) that is keeping me going to the comic book store.
Time will tell.

What I don't get is that the main point of starting over with 52 #1 issues was to give new readers a starting point from which to start reading. The idea was if you never read any DC comics before, you could start there without needing to know what came before. When this idea failed (Legion of Super Heroes comes to mind specifically), they came up with the idea of the upcoming Zero-month. The purpose? To give new readers a starting point from which to start reading. What's next? Negative-1 month?

The irony is, Marvel is still much easier for new readers to get into than DC. And they don't do it by rebooting their universe whenever the mood strikes them, but by ensuring that every now and then, a character has a new jumping-on point where shiat is explained to new readers without erasing their history (OK, apart from Spider-Man).

The problem DC has is an inability to think long-term; what happens in five years time when shiat has gotten too complex to attract new readers and your writers are referencing pre-reboot stories and nobody knows what is and what isn't in continuity again? Are you gonna re-reboot and lose a bunch more fans?

Nope.

Cancelling a good book like Batgirl 2009 so Geoff Johns and Company could fix Barbara Gordon because they find it to difficult to masturbate to cripples is one of the major reasons I quit reading new comics altogether.

Well, I'm fine with the reboot and starting over. So I like that he's more rash and stupid but you're right, he does seem to get his ass beat in every issue.
He also seems to get laid in every issue so you can't complain about that!

But it's really the art that bother me. It just looks weird so half the time I honest;y don't know who HE is vs. anyone else! And the men all look like women. It's just strange artwork!

Valiant is starting to resurrect itself (without their licensed titles -- Magnus, Solar and Turok) and are so far creating some good stuff.

So far I've seen XO-Manowar, Bloodshot and Harbinger, and I think Shadowman is due before the end of the year.

There are already four issues of it out and it's pretty great. I actually think his fantasy writing style suits comics more than novels sometimes.

New 52 turned out better than I think anyone (myself included) thought. Earth-2 is alternate dimensions done right, the core Batman title is as good as it's been since Loeb/Sale, both Morrison books are strange and wonderful, and Green Lantern's core title is the crazy, sci-fi, buddy cop movie I always wanted it to be. Even Red Hood and the Outlaws is just shy of excellent and a ton of their one-offs (Vandal Savage, Batman Beyond) are great, but my GOD have a ton of the titles stagnated. Already. (Supergirl, anything Liefeld is writing, Stormwatch)

Still, nice to see it work out as well as it has.
