You'd think a newspaper would do a better job of keeping their vault tidy.

There was nothing in Al Capone's vault
But it wasn't Geraldo's fault.

NOT TRUE. There was an old, rusty license plate.

Why are the Assistant D.A. and bailif huddled with Al?. Conspiring?
Where is Elliot?
Where are the jurors going for lunch?

He got out early in 1939 for good behaviour, after spending his final year in prison in a hospital, suffering from syphilis. Plagued by health problems for the rest of his life, Capone died in 1947 at age 48 at his home in Palm Island, Florida

Man, looking at those photos, there's a huge Lex Luthor or Wilson Fisk vibe for me.

I've been down in the sub-level vaults at Tribune Tower, and can easily believe that these plates, and a lot more, had been misplaced down there for this long. Everything below sub-level 3 is a poorly lit maze.

I was looking for the old pistol range; we never did find it.

If Geraldo Rivera had simply hired an archivist, the big news of his career wouldn't be about how it took a nose dive so quickly...

Doesn't much look like Robert De Niro, there. But I thought Bob played better a better Capone than Al.

/whut?

sweet-daddy-2: Why are the Assistant D.A. and bailif huddled with Al?. Conspiring?

It was just a tax case, wasn't like they were trying Capone for murder, and anyways back then, the antagonism we assume DAs to have for those they prosecute wasn't always present.

What I want to know is who the fark was still using glass plate negatives in 1931? That should have been a good ten years past their last gasp as a practical medium.

At the Tribune in 1931? They're lucky they had something as advanced as glass plate negatives. The owner, Robert McCormick, was a notorious isolationist, racist cheapskate.

That's too cool. My husband and I just got married on August 18th. We went to Chicago for our honeymoon. We went on the gangster tour. the tour guides were funny and gave a lot of information. I ended up purchasing a book from them. Haven't finished the book yet, but the pics were awesome. I would do that tour again in one minute. I loved these pics.

I'm surprised their morgue didn't turn out to be an actual one, with the dessicated remains of a long-forgotten archivist who's probably still drawing a paycheck.

Palm Island, is a man-made island in Biscayne Bay (I can see his house from mine). It's within city limits of the City of Miami.

It wouldn't surprise me. Newspaper cameramen used large-format cameras into the 50s at least. By the 40s, Weegee was using a Speedgrafix with celluloid negatives and was also one of the first photojournalists to shoot with a 35mm, iirc, but he was a freelancer. I could see newspapers being more conservative and forcing cameramen to stick to the old ways and dry glass plates into the 30s.

Looking at the images, there's no doubt they're glass plates; one is even cracked.

Because between massive downsizing, reorganizations, and sales to private equity firms the first thing they focus on is the organization of their archives. I'm shocked they weren't thrown out the window into a dumpster in an attempt to consolidate space.

I'm surprised Zell didn't put them all up on eBay to try to pay down debt.

Chicago Tribune threw out many amazing historical items from the "lower Michigan Avenue" level sub-basements when they emptied them out (back around '99) to make space for their new "Internet" teams. The levels below that were pretty much ignored for the last couple of decades, even the great Sam Zell couldn't do anything with real-estate that far below ground level.

Yeah, even the most notorious gangster in Chicago had cleaning lady problems. She was an Irish washerwoman named Molly Capone (no relation) and she used to go into the vault to empty a few bottles of rotgut to get her in the mood to dust a little. She also emptied the vacuum cleaner (a 1929 Hoover) in the vault while she was in there. Al cajoled and threatened but he couldn't get her to change.

We think she stole as well, because when Al fired her she bought herself a sumptuous casa in Havana, Cuba, which she named Dustlands.
