One Bad Apple: What's the Czech word for "Lawn Dart" ?

Albatross?

I don't know what it is with these planes that they crash so often.

I've flown an L-39 once. It's your basic trainer design from 50 years ago - slow to accelerate but fairly forgiving with the straight wing. But you can't get slow, just like any other airplane.

I wonder how many of those there are flying in air shows in the US? Whenmi lived in Lock Haven PA I used to know a guywho had a one. One of the nicest guys you'd ever want to meet. Unless he was taking the thing out at 9 am on a Saturday. I lived beside the runway and damn it was loud.

I hope it's not him.

Slow is a relative term.

I'll bet that piece of wreckage jettisoned to the right of the fireball was the pilot in his ejection seat.

Feeling toasty, it appears.

Lee hasn't had his out in quite some time. At one point he had lost flight status for medical reasons, but has since been cleared. Still, I don't see the Albatross up very often...

Only the military is allowed to have ejection seats. The FAA doesn't like the idea of pilots leaving the plane in flight, so all the ex-military jets in civilian hands are supposed to have the ejection seats disabled.

It's important to point out that that soon-to-not-be-an-aircraft is moving from right to left in that photo, just before setting a new world record.

I was at the Davenport air show about 20 years ago and the day after the show they lost a Harrier and pilot.

How difficult is it to re-enable the Ejection Seats?

According to the local Sheriff -- jet had an ejection seat. Imagine the pilot tried to maneuvered away from people.

judging by the fireball just call the area the field of creamed and mail a few pieces of burnt grass to the widow.

Going by the limited info in TFA the probable cause would be mechanical failure or weather. Let's see what the investigation reveals.

Disabling an ejection seat involves removing the pyros. Re-enabling that feature would require access to legally controlled burny-stuff.

Or MacGyver-ing some big ass-springs or something.

The rockets in the ejection seat have a set shelf life and have to be replaced every few years. Importing new rockets from Russia or one of the ex-Soviet block countries is sure to get the BATF really interested.
