Y'know what? No. Because you don't want to discuss anything. You just want your vengeance, and anyone who dares get in the way of it deserves your vengeance as well. So...*favorited!*

I am going to get a LOT a flack for this, and you know what? I don't care.

GO! STATE! BEAT! BOBCATS!

I don't know how to say this anymore without sounding like a part of the "football culture" the NCAA described PSU as having. I hope you all will understand that I am supporting a University that I love. I am supporting the students. I am supporting alumni, staff, and faculty.

I am NOT supporting what happened.

Agreed. Not affiliated with PSU, but we need to just move on. The immortal words of Mrs. Bobby Knight can not be said enough: The horse is dead, get off it.

Navy's option offense isn't looking as well-oiled as it has in previous years. I can't imagine that's because Notre Dame's defense is that good -- even as a fan/alumnus, I'm not that delusional.

2012-09-01 11:43:17 AM
Does Navy know they're supposed to play defense in this game? Almost all Navy does is run the ball and they're getting out rushed by Norte Dame.

A lot of that excitement and atmosphere is due to the students and alumni of the teams playing the games. Minus that, college football is just a sloppier version of the professional game.

Slow To Return: steamingpile: And watching it this morning I could see where the college game could catch on where the NFL failed, college does have more of an excitement feel to the game since even when losing people still shout.

A lot of that excitement and atmosphere is due to the students and alumni of the teams playing the games. Minus that, college football is just a sloppier version of the professional game.

I see it as the pro version is just a slowed down version of the college game, I have been bored a lot watching pro games but college is rarely boring. The big difference is college fans support their team win or lose, just like a lot of soccer fans. Pro fans start shiatting on their team if they lose two games, like giants fans wanting coughlin fired the middle of the season they won the sb, pro fans are just dicks.

I'm torn about this. As a general football fan and someone who knows people who work the university I always liked PSU because I respected the hard nosed old school football they play. After what happened, not sure where I stand. I want to root for them on behalf of the students, but I also want to see them fail for a few years just to show everyone involved in the coverup that their efforts at covering up child abuse to save the football program was all in vain. I think in the end the latter wins out. I'm already tired of the resilience angles ESPN is taking. So lose for a few years and then make a comeback

I did hear about that. Someone died earlier this week at a Texans game as well. I would venture to say alcohol was involved in both cases. I'm surprised things like this don't happen more often. I've seen some pretty rowdy crowds in Knoxville and I don't know how there isn't more fights, accidents, etc. Although it helps that there is no beer sold in Neyland stadium (the trick is to take in airplane bottles and pour them in your soda. Not that I know anything about that).

Judging by your handle, it would appear that you have a personal tie to the college game.

I was talking about trying to get the college game to catch on overseas, where there's little-to-no personal ties to the college game, ie students and alumni. The game would have to stand on its own merits, and as such, it essentially amounts to a sloppier version of the professional game.

Unless you think Bama could beat the Giants or Patriots?

I agree 100%. Much more passion involved from fans and players. More tradition with 100 year old rivalries. I like the slower paced games because it allows for more momentum shifts ( in the pros if you go down by 14 you're screwed, in college you can fight back). Also you see more trick plays and a greater variety of plays in general. I can watch NFL because Iove football but it doesn't compare to college

The accuracy suggests that it works pretty well relative to other predictors. It allows you to identify teams that aren't that efficient offensively (Houston) and extremely efficient with a slow pace (Wisconsin, Alabama, LSU). Just looking at raw scores make it seem like some teams are unstoppable offensively, when in practice, they score so much because they get 20% more plays than your average team.

I'm assuming it's there to provide incentive to not run it out of the endzone, but I wonder if teams especially those with good kickers and coverage might try doing really high kicks that fall short of the endzone now that anything inside the 25 is a win for the kicking team. Even if you only kick the ball to the 10 yard line, if it's high enough that you can get a tackle at the 22 yard line, that's now a win for the kicking team as opposed to the loss that it used to be.

SharkTrager: geom_00: I am going to get a LOT a flack for this, and you know what? I don't care.

GO! STATE! BEAT! BOBCATS!

I don't know how to say this anymore without sounding like a part of the "football culture" the NCAA described PSU as having. I hope you all will understand that I am supporting a University that I love. I am supporting the students. I am supporting alumni, staff, and faculty.

I am NOT supporting what happened.

The students and alumni that outed and stalked the victims, particularly those STILL under 18, to the extent that one is in witness protection and another's entire family had to move in secret?

Those students and alumni?

Or the staff who physically witnessed abuse and refused to say anything because they were afraid of getting fired?

That staff?

Knock it off. There have been dozens, if not hundreds, of threads for people to argue about that. This isn't one of them.

Aaron Murray is not looking very good on deep throws without AJ Green. And I know it's buffalo but I like that both the running backs are breaking arm tackles at least.

You... you don't really pay a lot of attention to sports, do you?

There are a lot of teams I'm not up on all their pre game rituals, big deal, few people are. That still doesn't make it a college atmosphere, the games of theirs I have watched on TV never seem that loud big deal. The only team I have ever heard people agreeing was a college type atmosphere was green bay and I hate green bay. Now lets shut up and just watch the games because I really don't care, just relating the college game being more exciting over NFL games.

Check it out at @TFGLiveOdds.

12349876: PluckYew: Donnchadha: So whose bright idea was the "Touchbacks on kickoffs come out to the 25" rule?

Team doctors?

I'm assuming it's there to provide incentive to not run it out of the endzone, but I wonder if teams especially those with good kickers and coverage might try doing really high kicks that fall short of the endzone now that anything inside the 25 is a win for the kicking team. Even if you only kick the ball to the 10 yard line, if it's high enough that you can get a tackle at the 22 yard line, that's now a win for the kicking team as opposed to the loss that it used to be.

Utah was doing this on Thursday night, Northern Colorado never returned a kickoff past the 15.

My friends at OU always made fun of me for being an Ohio State fan. They asked why I didn't go there and always accused me of not supporting the Bobcats. I told them that I have been an Ohio State fan since I was 5. I have gone against the Buckeyes once.....when they played Ohio in 2010. It would have been twice but I didn't get to see the Ohio State/OU game in 2008.

If you think the formula sucks, you're welcome to join our public pick'em pool and test us out. Pick about 12 games each week, focused heavily on BCS conference teams.

Well Ohio State fans compose Cleveland Browns fans and Cincinnati Bangles fans. Browns fans are known for being bitter assholes that love their team and (at least the majority that I have met) Most Bangles fans tend to be annoying bandwagon fans that never watched until Carson Palmer started playing.

I'm from Toledo so I'm not a giant asshole but I know that we can be. Toledo was generally the Switzerland of the Ohio State/Michigan rivalry. Both sides could live freely but we'd still sneer at the other side.

Seeing as how there is a discussion about pulling for a team where you didn't attend college let me give you a CSB: I grew up in Knoxville. A lot of my friends went to UT. My dad was a fan and on weekends we would go driving through the mountains listening to the games on the radio. Hence I'm a huge UT fan. I ended up going to and now working for a college that isn't UT but had a better program in what I wanted to do. The college I work for now doesn't even have a football team. There are various reasons people pick a favorite college team, but you don't have to go to the college to be part of the football community. I'm not sure you would get that overseas. The guys in the UK I know who are football fans usually are gamblers who like to bet on the games since there are more points scored than in soccer games so they see it as more fun.

Taking a time out while the home team is running off, then running the QB for 30 yards for stat padding's sake? Ya, good luck in the 2nd half, Ohio. You're gonna get your ass kicked.

Chunks McGunks: the_ed_dawg: steamingpile: I never made excuses, I told you last night but you ignored that, I have never given you excuses I really just don't care but I do recognize more difficult conferences over a long season while other people ignore that fact.

I would pick but I know I will only be about 50% at best, its impossible to pick better unless your hobby is writing a computer program to pick for you. But I like going out in public and not subsisting on a diet of MT dew and Cheetos.

Excuses shown in bold.

I won my office pool last year at about 60% picking 20 random games a week. Not impossible by any means.

That's my point, I had a 50-50 shot at getting that right. One pick off will make you a tick higher or lower, the average person does not have the time to pick winners with more consistency. Now adding in point spreads may be interesting but indifference still rules.

See, that's weird because I like gambling on soccer. The possibility of a draw makes it more interesting to me, and you get crazy money lines sometimes.

Wolves are two levels above Northampton Town and were still +120 to win this week in the Carling Cup. That's a great line for a prohibitive favorite.

I wouldn't do it either. I hate having to pull for teams I don't like just because I picked them. I'm not even going to do it again with the chance of a reward. And holy Christ. The way Georgia is playing they could actually lose this game if thy give up a score here and it looks like at least a field goal.

runaway06: Donnchadha: There are names on the backs of PSU's jerseys... wtf is up with that?

The bad news...none of you will see a bowl game in your career
The good news....you get to break tradition and have names on your jerseys!

I was talking that over with some other college football fans. We pretty much all agreed that the whole not playing a bowl game, from a football fan (and not a football revenue fan) perspective, was kind of ... meh.

There are just so damned many bowl games that we had to wonder 'what's the point?' From a fan perspective it's fun to see your team play one more game, but aside from the Rose Bowl or the championship game, it's kind of pointless. Either you end up in the championship game (and as a PSU fan, we don't really do well there), or you end up with another also-ran team that you really don't care about beating.

Yeah this is bullshiat, I missed most of my games because they were teams I hated, you can never take emotion out of it if you are a real fan. In my picks UF went 5-7 one year and bama went 6-6 the year they won the NCG.

Penn State doesn't count as a Big Ten team this year as far as I'm concerned. I'd rather see michigan win than Penn St this year.

If someone wants to do it to double check, they lost the last two games of 1997; then I counted 62 losses in 1998-2011. With no wins (all vacated) that is 64 straight losses coming into this year. This game makes 65. I was using wiki to count so I may have made an error by 1-2 games.

I'm going to be stunned if this guy's head coaching career amounts to anything. He may end up not being that bad, but the dumbest decision he ever made was staying at Penn State. The team will be bad, the situation will be tough, and he's going to be on a relatively short leash in spite of Penn State's potential suckitude.

'Cuse with a TD with 2:40 to go!

I'm still not sure who I want to root for. Syracuse is the local-ish FBS team. Dad went to Northwestern for grad school (but never really got into the football there, so it's not like he raised me to be a homer.) I picked Northwestern in the pick 'em whatever thing that the_ed_dawg and ffish do, but this week doesn't matter.

I'm one of the few who does like the horizontal stripe on Northwestern's unit, so I'll go with those, I suppose. Plus it would be more fun to have a TD drive within the final two minutes to win.

Just bear in mind that when you switch, SD channels will become unbearable to watch. If a game I want to watch is on an SD-only channel on my cable, it's damn near the equivalent of not being on TV at all (unless all the other games really, really suck, I'm not watching a game in SD).

QFT

Grew up on Cal football and thought I understood football futility. Then they turned the corner with Bruce Snyder. Got to watch Cal stomp Clemson at the Citrus Bowl in '92 (finally)

Then I went to Vandy and I fully understood football futility. Dowhower and Widenhoffer era if you could call it that.

Been to 1 NFL game and it was a bore, though it was at FedEx and it was the Redskins vs. the newish Texans so that could have something to do with the disinterest.

There is NO comparison IMO
