Oh FFS...

TFette from a Hungarian family here, and I wish I could believe this was completely out of step, but it's not. NO ONE likes gypsies in Hungary- they tend to "homeschool" their kids and just live off government assistance, but by this point it's really just set up as a self-fulfilling prophecy really. If you were Roma in Hungary and wanted to do well in life I honestly don't think you'd ever have a chance.

Last time I was in Mississippi, blacks and whites got along passably, blacks could vote and frequently won elections, and there was no overt hatred anywhere that I could see, over and above some smoldering resentment on both sides.

Since the Roma do not work, collect an income off the taxes paid by the main population, no not follow social customs of the region, make no effort to integrate and even less to improve themselves, the hatred of the locals is understandable. When people are despicable they deserve to be despised.

Pretty old formula: divide the people, stir up hatred---keep them fighting one another so they won't unite against the government.

You didn't know that? After the good guys got rid of those awful Nazis, the only thing left to do was have an ideological showdown with one CLEAR victor. (I mean, besides those backwards folks in what used to be Yugoslavia, of course.)

My grandparents were Hungarian and they hated the Roma. They were born in the early 1900s. This is nothing new. As far as I can tell, everyone hates the Roma. Russians, Ukrainians, Czechs, French, etc,.. anyone from that region.

White women barely dressed most of the year? Black people a big part of your population? Klan idiots starting up again? No, just some gypsies who are 8% of your population.

I spent some time in Romania and Hungary over the summer and I learned a thing or two. On the drive from Bucharest to Brasov, the Gypsies were lined up all along the side of the road hawking berries and such. On the train from Brasov to Budapest, there were little shacks along the tracks and even like a Gypsie flea market. Like something outta Snatch. "they ain't bad fellas." Right.

Crossing the border between Romania and Hungary was sorta like crossing over from Mexico to the U.S. It really was a stark contrast. I do have to say though, Budapest is one hell of a town. Liked it better than Paris by a long shot. I would gladly go back to Budapest....Paris not so much. 7 euro cokes....for farks sake.

Incidentally I understand BBC wants to use the native spelling, but if those letters just don't work in English maybe respell things so I can godam read it? "Ferenczi"? You realize those letters don't go together like that yes? "Szombati"? You know I can't read that right?

You can't help but sympathize with the anti-Roma sentiment. Roma culture is entirely incompatible with modern society.

I was in Greece a few years ago, and saw several "crippled" Roma children beggin in Athens - it turns out their parents bind their feet at early ages, MAKING them crippled. They are then put in wheelchair and expected to beg for money.

Pimping out your kids, stealing, and living in squatter camps on public land does not jive with the modern world.

Hungarian is actually far easier to read than English because every sound has just one letter associated with it. The trick is there are some "letters" that are actually two letters together, and "sz" is one of those that makes the "sss" sound. So there you go. (Before you ask a single "s" is a "sh" sound- so it's pronounced Budapesht, not Budapest.)

Actually learning to speak Hungarian on the other hand, well heh good luck.

You know subby, every time I hear about a white power march, it's in a Northern state. There is poverty in Mississippi, sure, and we know you look down on poor people from your lily white communities. But at least impoverished communities in MS, didn't have 87 shootings in one weekend. I'll stay down here in a civilized part of the country thanks.

Probably too late. It would have been a lot easier to become a banker when a huge chunk of the population (Christians) weren't allowed to do it.

the French view them as a burden on society, yet most Roma don't get social benefits. Most don't have French citizenship (even if born in the country), so they don't qualify for most things.

Hollande has promised to end forced expulsions, but isn't following through yet.

Nope actually those are Hungarian runes, which were used pre-Christianity and a lot of people still can read/write in (I can spell my name is the furthest I got). I think it's an old Turkic script which is why it's similar to German/Scandinavian runes- ie like how the French use the same letters as the English- and in recent years there's a big push amongst the nationalistic crowd for it to be used more often.

Same thing goes on in Romania. It's a catch-22 for them at this point: as a Roma the chances of someone giving you a job are slim, so you're either selling various hand-crafted low-value household items like brooms... or you're on welfare. Or both. This assuming you're not actually busy stealing from other people, running various gambling street games, or pimping.

Of course, being firmly entrenched in your traditions which require you to give precedence to your own clan's authority rather than actual law enforcement isn't really helping, either.
