The book is barely 200 pages long. That's not enough to justify a trilogy.

I dunno, the shorter gap between 2 and 3 strategy is what Back to the Future and The Matrix did and I think it makes you feel like you're back too soon, or that you never left and the middle film is still going. Not sure why they're doing this. Return of the King was in December like the two before. Do they not think There and Back Again will be good enough to be Oscar bait?

Maybe they're concerned about it being one big fight scene. I mean, if two is "The Desolation of Smaug," it seems like the dragon's bit it all wrapped up. All that's left is the five armies and going home.

So three books equals three movies, but one book shorter than any of those is also three movies? I think profit might be a motivating factor.

The more I think about this, the more my excitement about seeing the first film this December is tempered by the realization that it will end with me walking out of the theater dejected that I will have to wait so long to see the rest of it. Two films I was iffy about. Three is just stupid.

Also, does anyone know by now where they are breaking it up?

I just want Smaug to show up in some capacity without having to wait another year. Maybe a prologue?

There's no facts on where it's broken up yet, but based on the trailers I'm sure that part one at least contains Bilbo finding the ring. I'm guessing it ends with the group escaping the orcs by eagle.

Part two probably ends with the defeat of Smaug.

This gives at least one major action scene to each film (orcs, Smaug, Five Armies), plus there's however the appendix information and the battles with the Necromancer are inserted.

I agree to an extent. I thought two was acceptable but three is ridiculous.

Shameless money grab for most part.

If however, they show the dwarf battle outside the gates of Moria, then some might be forgiven.

Any idea what PJ intends for that female elf 'Tauriel' he's added into 'The Hobbit'?

/PJ's info page says there is no Legolas/Tauriel pairing.

As far as The Hobbit goes, *sigh* I guess I'm one of the suckers who is going to pay no matter how many ways they slice it. I just the hope the barrel scene is as good as I can imagine it and Smaug is over the top petty and greedy.

I know very little about the Hobbit lore but the trailer they have where the dudes all sing their little song is pretty homoerotic. Guys singing together in movies with a heavily serious tone in our day and age might as well be a sausage party gang bang scene. That song better be followed by them decapitating monsters and drinking their blood as they blare Iron Maiden. I have the obvious complaints as well but this is strangely a big one for me. I hate that trailer, a lot.

But a 9 hour hobbit movie is just stupid. You can read the book in less time.

I rather like the idea of BC's voice as Smaug. In my head, it seems to fit and I'm hoping it plays well on film.

According to Benedict Cumberbatch, you see Smaug's eye open at the end of the first film. But he said that before the third film was announced so if anything, his reveal is possibly pushed back to partway through the second movie.

Although his eye opening would be an awesome way to end the first film.

I'm sure after the third movie is released on video, someone will make a fan edit that remains true to the book, ignoring the appendix stuff. That should be a great film.

I'm still looking forward to the trilogy and will keep giving them money as long as they keep making Tolkien films.

Part one, journey as far as laketown. added action sequences but there are actually a fair few in the book. 'Nice' movie. Smaug may appear in storytelling cuts.

Part two, storytelling leads into full movie retrospective of smaug's takeover and desolation, cut with Gandalf's side story with the Necromancer. Epic saga stuff

Part three, dragon killed, battle, aftermath, the end. Action, betrayal and nice ending movie.

Why does he need motion capture for a dragon? They're going to have a guy in a body suit on all fours acting like a dragon? Seems unnecessary.

The book is a children's book but these aren't children's movies. It's the story of The Hobbit from the point of view of The Lord of the Rings.

I'm guessing Part one, The story up to entering Mirkwood or possibly escaping the spiders.

Part two, the journey to Laketown with all the side stuff with Galadriel and the White Council, Beorn, The assault on Dul Guldur. Possibly meeting Smaug

Part three, The dragon dies 5 armies and the journey home.

I'm ok with the trilogy approach. One assumed 2 and 3 will then be shorter, and I prefer the shorter wait between movies. The only sad thing is that fantasy movies fit so well with Christmas time, but that's a small price to pay. I saw the trailer in IMAX this past Friday and the movie looks great, brought back Gandalf and Gollum, and Freeman looks to be a great Bilbo. They kept the same theme, which is an excellent piece of music. And Cumberbatch as Smaug should be cool. Haters gonna hate, but I think it's easy to get excited about this one. Also Skyfall looks pretty good I must say.
