William Howard Taft was mobidly obese when he was President and there's talk that he had sleep apnea too.

However, within a year of leaving office he lost 80 lbs which was not only instrumental in extending his life, but also seems to have resolved his sleep apnea. He didn't die until 1930, 17 years after leaving the office of President.

If Teddy Roosevelt decides to hunt you for sport you'd be smart to cut out the middleman and mount your own head on a decorative plaque and have throw pillows made from your skin, with an apologetic note about your lack of festive tattoos.

Clinton got pretty healthy during his term, right?

How many healthy Presidents are there?

Carter, GW Bush, Bill Clinton, W and the nearest one?

5.

Five healthy Presidents, all vastly ahead of their peers in health.

Taft is the person to have served in all three branches of federal government. That's actually really impressive.

They're males ranging in age from almost 43 to 69 in culture that only started getting any serious traction behind nixing smoking and improving diet in the past 30 years. They're all going to look like lepers comparatively.

43, actually, since one President was counted twice.

Came here to say the same thing: the guy was shot and kept talking with the bullet in his chest for 90 minutes, then survived that ridiculous Rio da Duvida trip (seriously, read Candace Millard's "River of Doubt" - it's incredible) while contracting malaria and losing almost 60 pounds. Only a person of top-flight health and strength could have lived through either of those episodes.

On a side note, Taft could be considered the father/grandfather of the modern GOP. He broke away hard from TR's progressive policies to the point of causing TR to leave the Republican Party with all of the progressives. Plus, he undid the jurisprudence that was slowly unwinding Plessy v. Ferguson when he was Chief Justice.

I notice a fair amount of gunshot wounds listed. Those do tend to have a negative impacts on health. I also wonder why they didn't list Lincoln and his bouts with depression.

No, Roosevelt didn't try. He succeeded. However, being a conservationist, he returned Taft to his natural habitat.

The dead corpse of Teddy Roosevelt is probably more robust than the pasty, underfed, underpaid little intern they got to put together the slideshow over at fox.

If Fox had done the right thing and included Taft, Subby would have had to fall back on Chester A. Arthur, who had Bright's disease and was dead within a year of leaving office.

Cloudchaser Sakonige the Red Wolf: Because William Howard Taft was a Republican and this is Fox News, that's why.

Teddy Roosevelt was a Republican as well. The GOP just wants to sweep TR under the rug and forget he existed because he doesn't fit in with the 'narrative'. He was too forward thinking and progressive.

-First President to appoint a Jew to the Cabinet
-"The only wise and honorable and Christian thing to do is to treat each black man and each white man strictly on his merits as a man, giving him no more and no less than he shows himself worthy to have."
-Established the National Parks system and many aspects of land conservitorship
-Busted up large business trusts that were hurting the economy and was in favor of strong worker's rights, without the need for labor unions
-While he was the Assistant secretary of the Navy, his boss was doing nothing after the explosion of the Maine, Teddy took advantage of Secretary Long's absence to call a full meeting of Congress and get full appropriations of men and materiel for the looming Spanish-American War. He did this within a 4 hour timeframe while Long was having a massage.
-Commisioner of the NYPD that walked beats and fought internal corruption.

Considering that TR was the first President of the US in the 20th Century, his attitudes and ideas were pretty far ahead of the times. He even (eventually) had the guts to admit that he was wrong about his hatred towards Native Americans. He was the living epitome of the belief that every man should be judged on his own merits, rather than his ethnicity. This is the kind of man the GOP needs to model itself after and embrace. The fact that he's being quietly ignored by his political party shows the lack of morality and conviction the GOP leaders have these days.

Try not to serve in any more branches of government on your way through the parking lot.
