Martini suffered from Parkinson's disease and died at his residence in Milan, where he had lived since 2008, when the disease forced him to leave Jerusalem

It probably wasn't all THAT surprising.....or sudden.

>Martini suffered from Parkinson's disease

I don't think his fans were as shaken as he was.

Window seat, please.

This is a big loss. Martini was a brilliant scholar and theologically progressive, in other words: an endangered species in the Catholic hierarchy.

He was actually one of the good ones.

Perhaps, in his honour, the Milanese should rechristen the awkwardly-named negroni cocktail the "Cardinal Martini". It's bright red and everything.

Meh - It left me medium dry.

reminds me of that scene from fletch

Dr. Dolan: You know, it's a shame about Ed.
Fletch: Oh, it was. Yeah, it was really a shame. To go so suddenly like that.
Dr. Dolan: Ahh, he was dying for years.
Fletch: Sure, but... the end was really... very sudden.
Dr. Dolan: He was in intensive care for eight weeks!
Fletch: Yeah, but I mean the very end, when he actually died. That was extremely sudden.

That reminds of the joke about Cardinal Sicola being a finalist for pope.

Nice headline.

There's gotta be a joke in there about him being dirty, but It's early.

K, I'm going to slightly thread jack:

A martini should be made of good gin, a tiny splash of good vermouth, shaken, and served ice child with blue cheese stuffed olives.

"ice child" should be "ice cold". Stupid swype.

Okay, I liked the headline.

Loosing a cardinal with the balls to tell the Pope that he's wrong is a sad thing.

Even after his retirement, Martini raised "subtle though crucial objections" to the Church's opposition to all cases of assisted fertility, distribution of condoms to AIDS victims, and so-called right-to-die cases, Time magazine reported in 2007.

He "politely challenged" the pope's strong condemnation of an Italian government proposal to legalize civil unions for homosexual partners and voiced support for the ordination of women as deacons, Time reported.

Are we sure this guy was actually Catholic? I wish they'd made him Pope.

Now, that is just a quality headline. +1

I hear eggs benedict is a good cure for a martini hangover.

I LOL'd

Also, sounds like this was the sort of guy I wish there were more of in that godforsaken institution.
Bummer he kicked the bucket instead of that evil farking Pope asshat.

So in other words, he wasn't actually Catholic. He was in reality a true follower of Christ.
