Three for three? I can't even remember the other two movies he directed... I'm sure they were terrible. I'm sure because everything he's been in that didn't have matt or jay and silent bob in it was garbage.

His two films, Gone Baby Gone and The Town both have a 94% on rotten tomatoes. I suggest you watch both. They are excellent.

I'm one of the few that doesn't mind him as an actor, and The Town and GBG are really, really good films.

I didn't dislike The Town but I don't see it as good as everyone says it is. GBG was pretty damn impressive though. Hollywood needs to make these types of stories - personal, intimate, realistic characters with personal stories in a backdrop of bigger events.

Who the f*ck am I kidding. I'll leave this here to remind us why we're on the road to the 2505 blockbuster "Ass".

I really really liked The Town. Good script, good acting, well executed action scenes... just all around a really well made film. I was blown away by Gone Baby Gone though. Affleck has always struck me as a pretty sharp guy, despite some of the shiatty movies he acted in for the money.

This scene alone.

gameshowhost: Appeal? Did you even watch it? It's a really well-done film.

Yeah, saw it. Masshole living abroad, know it made lots of money/was well-received; also know GBG wasn't liked by everyone and this film seemed much more popular. But GBG was dark and interesting to me with an ending that had me and my brother (a cop) arguing for weeks, and The Town just seemed like another bank heist flick. And if I remember I guess I didn't buy Affleck's acting or the relationship.
But, hey, you convinced me - I'll watch again.

thamike: This scene alone.

ok, ok I'll watch again

The article says, "One of the key downfalls of Jimmy Carter's presidency, the crisis found 52 U.S. citizens captured by the Iranian government..." I thought the Carter presidency was just a key downfall in general.

CSB: My 3L year at Michigan State the 2 dorm movie channels each showed one movie on a loop for almost a semester. Channel 11 showed "The Town" and Channel 12 showed "Coming to America." I think I ended up seeing each film 10 times, I only got 10 channels because I wouldn't spring for a converter box. I thoroughly enjoyed both movies.

I think his next project should be a re-imagining of Gigli. Perhaps make it into a trilogy while he's at it.

It's amazing to me that 90 percent of the hatred for Ben Affleck comes from the fact that he was in an overexposed relationship almost 10 years ago.

Did he have some bad movies? Sure, everyone in Hollywood does.

What's worse is that he gets an INCREDIBLE amount of hate for Daredevil. It's almost Clooney-esque Batman levels, but here's the dirty little secret - outside of some sequences not dating too well for overuse of bullet time and wire work, it's a fun, watchable movie.

Seriously, why does Affleck catch all the shiat for Daredevil when Colin Farrell was clearly the worst thing about that movie?

I'd say the worst part was Elektra. Not Garner, I think she did a semi-decent job, although she wouldn't have been my casting choice. But the whole love story angle seemed an ill fit. And I don't think I'm the only one, considering that the Director's Cut excised that whole part, resulting in a vastly improved movie that's actually quite watchable.

Affleck is a bit limited in his range, especially when contrasted with his frequently collaborating soul mate, which is why he gets lumped in the Cage/Reeves category. All of which are a bit better than their reputation.

Great that he's doing a good job as a director, and I believe with age he'll be able to escape his squared-jaw leading man cliche a bit and actually surprise us with some decent acting.

/And, as others already said, Phantoms...

Agreed. To my surprise, he's capable. And he's with JG. So suck it.

Gone Baby Gone was great. After the last scene (last line, I should say) I think I probably just stared at the screen for ten minutes processing it all. I'll be seeing his new movie for certain. Affleck strikes me as a bit like Mel Gibson -- I don't mean that he's crazy, but while he's OK in front of the camera he's even better behind it.

/say what you will about Gibson (and who hasn't?) the man can direct.

What've I been telling you? You gotta do the safe picture. Then you can do the art picture. But then sometimes you gotta do the payback picture because your friend says you owe him.

And sometimes, you have to go back to the well.

Man, Gone Baby Gone. With that and Assassination of Jesse James, Casey Affleck just had a killer year of great performances. I hope he finds something as good again.

(Also, Dennis Lehane, author of GBG, has another great novel I love, The Given Day, set around the 1919 police strike in Boston. And there's a sequel coming out this fall!)

my wife burned through the entire series of Lehane books that Gone Baby Gone is from in about a months time and enjoyed them all

Agreed 100%.

I've been meaning to give The Town another look - my wife is new to this continent so while it looks like a good movie, it's impossible for her to understand the BAH-ston accent. But I thoroughly loved Gone Baby Gone - to the point where I'm sure I could come up with a flaw if I absolutely had to, but it would take me some time.

/I still think Silent Bob wrote many of the scenes in Good Will Hunting though. They just feel like his writing.

And isn't that saddest thing about Gibson, that he's being blacklisted for being accused of what Chris Brown actually DID and yet Brown is on MTV, videos, etc. And Gibson, who has ten billion times more talent, is basically referred to as a joke. Yes people, let's keep building up the shiatheads like Brown, Kardashian, Lohan, etc. who actually have DONE horrible things. Aaargh.

And Affleck is good. People hate on the guy for some weird reasons but he's been in some awesome movies and is proving to be a great director (if this movie is good).
