FTA/After the explosion, he sat in the parking lot, still holding his cigarette.

Burns leaned over Alvarado. "Don't go out, Jose," Burns told him. "Don't go out."
I'm not sure which of the above sentences are funnier.

I came to post the same thing. It's like the writer thinks they are writing a novel, not reporting news.

Granted I tried to read it backwards for some reason but I still don't think these paragraphs are congruent. It's like a movie where everything is shown out of sequence.

It is the weekend, and some shmuck thought he could get away with changing the setting on his authoring software from "News Article" to "Classic Novel".

I expect the injured men to sue the person for bumping into the gas pipe and the cigarette company for failing to put warnings on the packages and cigs clearly stating that lit product is a possible source of ignition.

Not sure if serious, but what I've learned from myth-busters is conditions have to be just right. The article obfuscates the facts, but it sounded like they were outside the building, and an open flame (probably pilot light) inside is more likely to have ignited the leak. They would have been overwhelmed with the sulfur smell at concentrations high enough to be ignited by a cigarette.

Even given that, I still wouldn't tempt fate by investigating a suspected gas leak with a lit cigarette.

Looks like Mythbusters is going to claim a few more victims before anyone realizes that "conditions just right" are a statistical certainty when iterated over time and space.

/and nothing of value will be lost

They were outside on the sidewalk and the cigarettes lit the gas? No way, didn't happen. Something else lit it.

Nice one, TheOtherDub, I didn't think of Pat Mustard.
So do you suppose the explosion was heard at the North Pole?

On the bright side, according to the saying, this man should stay warm for the rest of his life.

2012-09-01 11:21:37 AM
Both men were flown to Tampa General Hospital. Alvarado was in critical condition late Friday night; the other man's condition was not available.

I'm guessing "crispy".

Haven't these guys ever seen a movie? You're supposed to walk AWAY from the massive explosion, preferably in slow motion. It's the only way to stay safe.

"Natural gas does not ignite by itself; a mixture of gas combined with air must occur before it is flammable. In addition, an ignition source that has a temperature greater than 1100 degrees must be present. Possible ignition sources include pilot lights, matches, cigarette lighters, highway flares, as well as sparks from tools, doorbells, cell phones, flashlights, heating systems, garage door openers, electric motors, switches, and vehicle engines."

If you suspect a natural gas leak:
Immediately leave the premises or building.
Do not start a vehicle if it is in an attached building (garage or carport).
Do not open an automatic garage door.
Do not use anything that could cause a possible ignition source (e.g. matches, open flames, lighters, cigarettes, et. al.)
Do not turn any electrical switches on or off.
Do not use any telephone, including cellular phones, in the home or building.

From my local natural gas provider. I know Mythbusters did an episode on gasoline, proving it is not the liquid that ignites, but the fumes, but I have not seen one on natural gas (however, I may have missed it). But as you say, Natural gas + flame/spark = candidate for Darwin award.

Cig will ignite gas in air. Go turn on a camping stove or gas bbq, I bet you a dollar and your eyebrows you can get it to light Flick it for best results.
