I think it's more likely that they promised to maintain the ship and have instead allowed it to slowly be consumed by rust.

Sorry, Sasquatch just stopped by, and told me to take them offline. He wouldn't sign a photo release.

That's nothing, I've got a dash cam video of chasing F15s around in a foo fighter, I can't show it to you because apple owns the image format from the alien recorder.

None of those photos represent what the ship looked like in 1974. Of course, I can't really say that as I wasn't on that ship at that time so what do i know.

"They'd like us to remove photos of the non-public parts" is not the same as "classified". I'd say it's because they don't want people to see the rusted out mess below decks. It's a PR thing.

It's either that, or they sold exclusive photo rights to some publication or cable channel as part of their fundraising. Have run into that a couple times in the past.

Thanks for the link Pete! Looks like the Navy I was in.

I toured the Queen Mary while it was being converted into a tourist trap. The tour went through restored and un-restored areas to give people a feel of the work involved.

I was just at the Intrepid last month with my nephews. Went to go see the space shuttle which was awesome.

But what surprised me was the Intrepid's score card on the hanger deck. Holy fark, that ship kicked ass around the world like it was going out of style.

Not in all that bad of shape for spaces that haven't been maintained in 40 odd years, although those photographed were probably all above the waterline. I've pulled flakes of rust the size of dinner plates off of bulkheads on active ships when I was in the Navy.

Be interested in seeing the spaces down below (more humidity/condensation).

I spent almost 4 years on the JFK crawling around shaft alleys, pump rooms, and the main spaces. I would pick the below deck stuff anytime over the touristy stuff on the hangar bay and flight deck. Working in a 140 degree mainspace in the Persian Gulf was something you really have to experience to properly appreciate.
I heard a 30+ ton propeller cavitate in the open air when we were going through massive waves that broke on the flight deck in the middle of a hurricane, that was memorable. Especially when I was just 30 feet away as deep you as get in the aft shaft alleys. We ended up pulling 7 people out of that hurricane after their cargo ship sank in the storm without any lives lost.

Any scorecard from a Fast Carrier Task Force CV is pretty impressive:

Here's the USS Yorktown (CV-10) in Charleston, SC:

i450.photobucket.com

And here's the USS Lexington (CV-16) in Corpus Christi, TX:

i450.photobucket.com

And for what it's worth, the Intrepid is an interesting case study in what happens when a warship museum is more concerned about turnstile numbers than historic preservation. They've made a lot of irreversible changes to the structure of the ship. The rear hangar deck looks nothing like a ship; it looks like any museum space you'd see on land, and the aft gallery deck (between the hangar and flight decks, where pilots would be briefed prior to missions) has been gutted, glass installed all along the aft bulkhead, and turned into a large restaurant.

Just doublechecked and yes I have been onboard the USS Intrepid. I toured it back when we hit New York City during Fleet Week 1996 (or 1997 not sure anymore).
It was "less than exciting" after serving on an active duty carrier for almost two years at that point, and being confined to the upper levels for this one. I mainly wanted to see Central (the main hub where they control engineering things) and the Oil Lab but those sections were all off limits of course, But admittedly my perspective was more than bit a jaded.

The Intrepid is cool, but if you happen to be driving there on a Sunday morning, do NOT park on West 43rd even if it looks like there's on-street parking available and the only sign says "no parking M-F".

itsatrap.jpeg

Bloomberg's thieving minions will ticket you anyway and the only way you get out of it is to show photographic proof that there's no other no-parking sign up for the entire block.

Some museums consider it a safety issue. Pictures of areas not on tour can encourage people to get off the tour route and go exploring, and even though there may be locked doors and other things keeping tourists from wandering off the route, you can't stop everyone. And a lot of unrestored spaces have all sorts of potentially nasty things. Asbestos, lead paint, or (in the case of the battleship Texas and the cruiser Olympia), if you get down far enough you might find a corroded hull plate and go sliding through into several feet of mud. So maybe the museum staff is erring on the side of not having a discussion with their insurance provider.
