Sexual bondage contract? I mean, I've heard of a "play contract" where both partners outline their limits and expectations for a D/s relationship (Yes, there really are people out there who live it as a lifestyle with their partner.), but it's in no way legally valid, and it's in no way an absolute contract which is binding in any way outside of the relationship.

Pretty much, most people who play do so under the principle of "Safe (As possible), Sane, and Consensual". Most people I know won't even play if they're drunk, or under the influence. It would make sense if you were worried about your partner later charging you with assault. I can imagine that if she really loved the guy she was doing this with, and expected things to get especially kinky it could be to protect him against third party accusations of abuse. Preventing nosy busy-bodies from hurting them legally.
Other than that, I got nothing.

It could just as easily be learned behavior if, say, she came from an abusive household. Those who grow up being beaten or seeing their parent beaten by the other parent tend to internalize a belief that physical punishment and affection are inseparably intertwined. It could be any multitude of reasons really. That's why I'm curious.

Well, as I also pointed out, there are other reasons as well. It's not up to you or I to determine what those reasons were (even though I'm so curious), but for those involved in this whole legal mess, and I get the feeling it isn't going to be easy. It's possible she liked it. It's possible he threatened/extorted her. It's possible she had severe psychological issues. When it comes to human behavior and motivations, the sky's pretty much the limit.
