You have to get even with it.
It's a moral imperative.

The technologies developed are not useless.

Directed-energy weapons are the future of warfare, because ultimately nothing hits a target faster than light. If you miss with a missile, you may not have time to fire another. If a laser misses, you've got plenty of time against even a hypersonic target.

And it's not at all like "hitting a bullet with a flashlight"- a laser is a wallop off energy that transfers itself into the first solid object it touches.

You're right AND there are A-10s out there too!

Heh I always wanted to be a fighter jock growing up...but the A-10 will always be my favorite plane. If i ever get rich and famous I would love to fly in one.

The A-10, for when you absolutely have to fark the shiat up of some poor dumb-ass on the ground who pissed you off (Fart of DEATH FTW, baby!)(that sound is rather distinctive and unforgettable).

The NAVY has those awesome Phalanx that I believe are similar to that gun. They are affectionately called R2 Units. We were out at sea and witnessed some test firings. Frickin AWESOME!!!

A GAU-8 and an M61 are different weapons. One is 20mm and the other is 30mm.

RoyBatty: 747s should not be allowed to be left in a boneyard. Neither should F-16s for that matter.

Some of those -16s are 30 years old.

the_innkeeper: If you would like to try to pack all of the radar gear that a CIWS needs in order to track and successfully engage a target into the belly of a plane, and have it flying close enough to the launch site to be within range when the missile is fired, and have a steady enough platform to not shake the shiat out of your targetting solution, be my guest.

As much as I love me some Meyrink, I can't get past her in this role...

I know. However, the AC meets most of your requirements:
If you would like to try to pack all of the radar gear that a CIWS needs - check
in order to track and successfully engage a target into the belly of a plane, - check
and have it flying close enough to the launch site to be within range - check
when the missile is fired, and have a steady enough platform to not shake the shiat out of your targetting solution - check
