Because directed energy is in no way the wave of the future for weapons.

I heard a story once, from someone who was in a position to know what he was talking about (no guarantee he wasn't just shiattin' me, though) about the ABL when it was still in its original testing phase in a KC-135.

The laser and its chemical tanks and electronics pretty much filled the body of the -135, and it had a big-ass mirror and quartz window somewhere up near the front, so it would fire through the roof. Until, after a few flights, the pilots found out what it was, and that it was pointing right towards them, and they made the project rip it all out and turn it around.

Well, I thought it was funny, anyway.

I'm sure it's being held in storage by top men.
TOP MEN.

If it had been a Navy project, it would be handled by bottoms.

It's because they have made a smaller, cheaper one, or two or 10.

It was a research platform, but I still hope it ends up at WPAFB someday.

I never sleep, I don't know why. I had a roommate and I drove her nuts, I mean really nuts, they had to take her away in an ambulance and everything. But she's okay now, but she had to transfer to an easier school, but I don't know if that had anything to do with being my fault. But listen, if you ever need to talk or you need help studying just let me know, 'cause I'm just a couple doors down from you guys and I never sleep, okay?

The "boneyard" and all its cousins make me so sad.

747s should not be allowed to be left in a boneyard. Neither should F-16s for that matter.

Sell them to aficionados.

The difference is in hitting a bullet with a bullet or hitting a bullet with a flashlight.

/Assuming you have a flashlight of doom, the latter is much easier and effective.

In the 16 years this chemical laser was being developed, solid state lasers matched then exceeded its capacity. Plus, the plane couldn't carry enough of the chemicals for more than a few shots and the chemicals were highly toxic.

Article then went on to say ". At least, the Pentagon is now using the experience to develop drones with lasers.". So in reality the program didn't die. The program existed in order to develop the technology of lasers shooting down things. We are now using this technology. It's like saying the Manhattan nuclear project was shut down after they invested the Nuclear Bomb. Totally misleading.

I've worked with ordnance defeating technology for a few decades now, the only area that laser excel in this application is the cool factor.

Maybe because an airborne laser platform can be hit with an easier to make and much cheaper ground based laser?

that or paint the missiles with a sticky paint and throw some soot on it so it can't be seen with radar. (one time use and all) 20 bucks to defeat a 5 billion dollar boondoggle.

I did some work with Boeing-SVS on this thing. Sad to see it shutdown. It probably is for the best though as solid state lasers have matched the output of this thing (and certainly surpassed the output duration).

Agreed, but this thing did pave the way for the current generation of large-scale laser weaponry, and taught the scientists involved a lot.

I don't know what's wrong. I tried twice to post the picture of her, Daily, and two other gals in swimwear in Valley Girl, but it they were both tossed.
Maybe you can go directly to it. Meyrink is on the left (her right), with little Daily on the right (her left).
