Eirik: You got that backward: Anything he ever flew became cool.

All of us combined (fark members) will never be as cool as Neil Armstrong.

Yup, though Armstrong never flew high enough with the X-15 to get his wings. He'd have to wait until Gemini 8 for his first flight into space. X-15 works on the same basic principal as Spaceshipone & Spaceshiptwo though. Still the fastest manned aircraft ever and Armstrong has the third fastest flight with the X-15.

Minimum altitude for official astronaut status is 50 miles in the US, 100 km elsewhere. The X-15 and SpaceShip One have met both standards.

TFA says he only got 207,000 feet in the X-15, still not in space but closer than I'll probably ever get. But the X-15 was a spacecraft complete with attitude control thrusters so I'd count it as 3 space and 7 air craft. And one bad ass guy. Though from what I've read about the F-104 it was more likely to kill him than the rest of them.

John Buck 41: Serious question. Why isn't 'aircraft' pluralized with an S?

Same reason sheep doesn't. Aircraft, like sheep, is already plural, so it doesn't need an S.
