(WTOP)   Love Diet Pepsi, but hate how aspartame loses its sweetness so quickly and has such high susceptibility to heat? No worries, the company is testing acesulfame-potassium as a replacement. Mmmmm, acesulfame-potassium   (wtop.com) divider line 17

Acesulfame potassium + aspartame has been used in Diet Pepsi's flavored sodas, like their Vanilla and Lime variants. It's also the sweetening combo used in Coke Zero, Diet Dr Pepper, and pretty much every other diet soda that isn't plain Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi.

Coke and Pepsi learned after the New Coke fiasco that you don't fark around with the formula on a core product, even if the new formula is preferred by taste-testers. Once the blindfold is off, consumers apply an irrational attachment to the old product and throw a fit at the change.

If they are going to make such a change at this point, they are wise to 1) announce it ahead of time, and 2) announce that they aren't changing the flavoring formula.

"It'll still taste the same, but will last longer if stored in a warm place" is a good way to get around the irrational response.

Or, make a new name like Diet Pepsi smooth, or something like that to market beside regular Diet Pepsi.

That's what makes me INSANE about soft-drink makers: They use ACE-K specifically BECAUSE it has that "diet" taste, they even Blend it with Splenda when they use that as the main sweetener, even though spenda is basically indistinguishable on the palate from sugar when used alone.

It's a big deal to me because A) I'm "allegric" to aspartame-which is to say it gives me horrible abdominal cramps, and its apparently a genetic condition because at least my sister reacts the same way. and B) when i lived in the Midwest I could buy "Diet RC" -(NOT Diet Rite -which uses the Sucralose Ace-k Mix) which only had splenda and was farking delicous

(Diet coke with Splenda doesn;t seem to exist anymore and it was a blend as well, and for watever reason I farking hate Pepsi One which I think they'll replace with this)

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: . I now prefer regular iced tea with a bit of lemon, and think sweet tea tastes like cough medicine.

Growing up the only tea made around around my house and my grandma's house was hot tea with cream and sugar or sweet lemon tea from a can, holy shiat one brand had a top that you had to get off with a can opener and my sister stepped on the cut off top once. She damn near sliced her foot in half. We never had anything other than hot tea after that. I still associate hot tea with George Carlin, cause when dad wasn't terrorizing everyone in the house he was kinda awesome and he'd have tea parties with me and my sister where we'd listen to old records. Also how come you have the association that cold sweet tea equals cough syrup? I only have that with dr.pepper and anything cherry, even real cherries sadly but that's the price for abusing one too many bottle of robitussin.

My wife left a couple of cases of Diet Pepsi in the un air conditioned breezeway this summer. It tastes horrible compared to something you buy straight out of the store cooler.

I started drinking diet soda a few years ago when I was on a weight loss kick. It was farking HORRIBLE at the start, but after awhile, I got used to it and now I cannot drink regular soda. It's just too sugary. It coats your frigging teeth for hours afterward.

1) The aspartame gives you cancer argument has been debunked more than the "Obama is a Kenyan" argument.

2) I'm a Type 1 Diabetic and my doctors recommend I drink diet pop over pretty much any other drink besides water.

3) Caffeinated water costs more than soda, so I drink diet pop. It also has the same caloric content as water (ZERO).

4) Diet pop only correlates with higher weights because people who drink it think they can "make up" those calories in other ways and end up over eating.

5) Whatever, I'll drink what I want ... :-p

Yeah, I'm technically a bit overweight, but I drink a lot of diet soda. I'd be farking obese if I drank the regular stuff.

JerseyTim: Who loves Diet Pepsi?

My aunt. She would drink that shiat obsessively while chain smoking Winstons, she even did this while going through chemo and radiation, and it was the only soda she ever kept in her house. I remember going with her to walmart and the first thing she would do was to grab a 20oz diet pepsi in the bottle. Then she'd just keep shopping and at the checkout hand the cashier the empty bottle.

/It was one of those odd but endearing things she did/probably still does even though she's missing a kidney and bladder now.

Smelly Pirate Hooker: Diet drinks are goddam disgusting. I question the judgment of anybody who drinks them regularly. And I'm not even talking about any health concerns. They just taste like shiat (well, not actual shiat, but you know, bad).

I drink them, but that's because I grew up in the house of a life-long diabetic, and we didn't have juices or teas because they were not good for my father, and so once we got out of kiddie-stages, we often had diet coke around because he could drink it.

Well that's awful, because Coke Zero sucks compared to Diet Coke. Diet Pepsi is my favorite, but maybe that will have to change if they resort to this without an option to not have ace-k.
