(WTOP)   Love Diet Pepsi, but hate how aspartame loses its sweetness so quickly and has such high susceptibility to heat? No worries, the company is testing acesulfame-potassium as a replacement. Mmmmm, acesulfame-potassium   (wtop.com) divider line 108

Acesulfame potassium + aspartame has been used in Diet Pepsi's flavored sodas, like their Vanilla and Lime variants. It's also the sweetening combo used in Coke Zero, Diet Dr Pepper, and pretty much every other diet soda that isn't plain Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi.

Coke and Pepsi learned after the New Coke fiasco that you don't fark around with the formula on a core product, even if the new formula is preferred by taste-testers. Once the blindfold is off, consumers apply an irrational attachment to the old product and throw a fit at the change.

If they are going to make such a change at this point, they are wise to 1) announce it ahead of time, and 2) announce that they aren't changing the flavoring formula.

"It'll still taste the same, but will last longer if stored in a warm place" is a good way to get around the irrational response.

Diet drinks are goddam disgusting. I question the judgment of anybody who drinks them regularly. And I'm not even talking about any health concerns. They just taste like shiat (well, not actual shiat, but you know, bad).

Start drinking them on a regular basis and you soon don't taste a difference. After I was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes back in high school in 2003, I started drinking Diet Pepsi and Diet Dr. Pepper pretty often because I found their "Diet" variants tasted very close to their normal pop. Now, when I drink the occasional regular pop, I think it tastes bad.

/Can't stand Diet Coke unless I'm eating a meal though, otherwise that stuff really does taste like shiat.

Well that's awful, because Coke Zero sucks compared to Diet Coke. Diet Pepsi is my favorite, but maybe that will have to change if they resort to this without an option to not have ace-k.

I drink them, but that's because I grew up in the house of a life-long diabetic, and we didn't have juices or teas because they were not good for my father, and so once we got out of kiddie-stages, we often had diet coke around because he could drink it.

1) The aspartame gives you cancer argument has been debunked more than the "Obama is a Kenyan" argument.

2) I'm a Type 1 Diabetic and my doctors recommend I drink diet pop over pretty much any other drink besides water.

3) Caffeinated water costs more than soda, so I drink diet pop. It also has the same caloric content as water (ZERO).

4) Diet pop only correlates with higher weights because people who drink it think they can "make up" those calories in other ways and end up over eating.

5) Whatever, I'll drink what I want ... :-p

JerseyTim: Who loves Diet Pepsi?

My aunt. She would drink that shiat obsessively while chain smoking Winstons, she even did this while going through chemo and radiation, and it was the only soda she ever kept in her house. I remember going with her to walmart and the first thing she would do was to grab a 20oz diet pepsi in the bottle. Then she'd just keep shopping and at the checkout hand the cashier the empty bottle.

/It was one of those odd but endearing things she did/probably still does even though she's missing a kidney and bladder now.

I started drinking diet soda a few years ago when I was on a weight loss kick. It was farking HORRIBLE at the start, but after awhile, I got used to it and now I cannot drink regular soda. It's just too sugary. It coats your frigging teeth for hours afterward.

My dad hates diet sodas, and swears he can taste the difference between diet and regular, so one day I decided to secretly put him to the test.

I waited till he went out to get some lumber and I emptied all of his bottles of Dr. Pepper and replaced them with Diet Coke.

He comes home, grabs a bottle from the fridge, and heads up to the roof. I hear some hammering, which suddenly stops, a muffled "What the...", then silence for about a good minute.

I grab one of the bottles out of the fridge and walk outside and it goes like this:

Me: How's it goin' up there?
Dad: Wha-oh fine-hey does this Dr. Pepper taste funny to you?
Me: Nope. Why?
Dad: I could swear this is diet ... and not even Dr. Pepper, more like Coke or something.
Me: No, it tastes fine to me. (takes ladder)
Dad: Oh No ... you are not doing that again!
Me: Enjoy your Dr. Pepper Dad-you can come down when you've fixed the roof!

I then proceeded to throw on dad's Led Zeppelin records, smoke up his "hidden" weed stash, and drink my Diet Coke in its Dr. Pepper bottle while mom blew me in his recliner.

I can barely taste the difference in Diet Dr. Pepper (My almost exclusive soda intake) vs the regular. But that is the only diet soda that's true for me. EVERY other diet soda has that nasty aftertaste that makes it undrinkable. I assumed after switching to Diet Dr. a few years ago that would change eventually, but nope, that's definitely not the case

Fiasco? If you looked at coke made in the early 80s the ingredients started as:Carbonated water, sugar... They couldn't just switch to High fructose corn syrup and have nobody notice. Unless they made crappy new coke and then brought back coke classic a little later with the switch. Coke classic isn't. The real classic stuff had sugar.

And diet anything is just chemical crap making people more fat.

Frankly I hope they not only go Ace-K but ditch the godsbedamned aspartame altogether, or if they MUST do a combo with another sweetener go with an Ace-K/sugar or Ace-K/Splenda mix--then I might actually be able to not have to give the Usual Reminder of what diet drinks I can have to my diabetic relatives and friends. Hell, it might even mean I can actually get something besides tea at a restaurant if I'm actually trying to "be good" :D

(The "Usual Reminder", of note: "Y'all know I'm an aspartame-sensitive migraneur, so the diet drinks I CAN have consist of Pepsi One, Diet Coke with Splenda, and most RC products and specialty drinks a la Ale-8-1 and Cheerwine. Regular diet Coke and Pepsi will make me hate life the next day so I cannot has. Please make sure there's something I can drink. :D")

/no, aspartame will NOT give you cancer, but there is a non-negligible population--folks who are aspartame-sensitive migraneurs--who cannot has.
//No, not just claiming this, actually diagnosed by a real neurologist after a food elimination trial pretty much knocked out the weirdness with not only headaches but auras, puking, and weird changes in temperature sensation that are likely an aura themselves
///have done food trials with Ace-K, it doesn't throw my body into the same misery that aspartame does, or at least nowhere to that degree...Splenda is still my friend when dealing with diabetics, though
////it is goddamn farking impossible to find migraneur-safe non-sugar fountain drinks

I think Coke Zero is spicy; I kind of like it. But I have diet sodas very, very rarely, probably haven't had one in months. Regulars never. Strangely reading this makes me want a diet soda, which is odd, considering what a diet soda is-doesn't seem like it should be that appetizing.
