The only real question is, how many articles reporting this will utter "If you're not the customer, you're the product?"

did subby read the article? I must have missed where it says facebook gives out your contact info.

Facebook has ads?

So businesses that have your phone and email can use that to get your facebook ID. I wonder if anyone will use this in mass to build up a facebookID/phone/email list..

Um, nowhere in the article does it say they're giving any info to the advertisers. In fact, it says the opposite, subtard.

1.) Is it possible to dethrone Facebook?
2.) Would a clone replace Facebook or would it be different?
3.) Have we grown to where we do not need Facebook?

The only way Facebook will go away is if the competing product works with Facebook and you can import friends.

The Windows Live Microsoft account has some stuff that's comparable, and you can sort of import contacts from Facebook, but it's far from perfect and not as good as Facebook.

As much as I dislike Facebook, they are not "selling" your details as such.
This is how I understand it to work...
- A company has your email address.
- Facebook has your email address. And age, home address, gender and a whole bunch of other details.
- Company wants to market to 24 year old employed females in London
- Company gives Facebook it's mailing list and adverts/emails
- Any 24 year old employed females in London will get those adverts/emails

It's more of a match-making process not the wholesale selling of contact details.

Good thing I've never given them a phone number, and my email address is a throwaway for spam.

That being written, time to delete the facebook I think.

Yep. It's outlived its usefulness to me.

If you must use Facebook for whatever (family, work, etc) be sure to replace all your personal data with nonsense. Use a throwaway email address from Gmail or Yahoo. Upload stock photos.

The website bubble/death spiral

1. Create website
2. Run reasonably ethically.
3. Get lots of users
4. Float company on stock market/sell to idiots
5. Owners want money from investment, so start desperately chasing income by whatever means.
6. Users go elsewhere due to getting pissed off at means to make money.
7. Owners get even more desperate
8. More users leave
9. Repeat 7 + 8 until dead

Apparently not enough because there seem to be a lot of people dumb enough to still have facebook accounts.

Let me see if I can cover all the bases for you:

"I don't use Facebook because I don't believe in just handing over my private info to advertisers. Besides, everyone knows it's really just a data mining tool for the CIA/FBI/NSA/Illuminati."

"I have real friends in the real world, and don't need virtual ones."

"If you're not the customer, you're the product."

"I knew their stock would crash after their IPO, which is why I didn't buy into it like all the other investing noobs. I might pick up some shares when they're going for about tree-fiddy."

"Mark Zuckerburg is an idiot who doesn't know the first thing about running a large company. He should step down and allow someone with real world business experience to take his place."

"Mark Zuckerburg is a savvy businessman who played his hand perfectly, and you just mad, bro."

"Facebook is nothing more than a soapbox for attention whores. I had an account for two weeks but I deactivated it and never looked back because I'm deeper than that, man."

"Facebook is a great tool for keeping up with distant family/planning events/checking to see how fat my exgirlfriend got."

"Social networking is done and nobody should try to outcompete Facebook because they've already reached critical mass."

"Facebook will go the way of MySpace/Friendster/Livejournal/Geocities once something better comes along."

"Facebook has always had a weak business model and the picture only looks bleaker as more users switch to mobile."

"Facebook is a profitable company that needs to find new and innovative revenue streams."

I think I may have missed a few so someone please feel free to help me out.

All of you idiots defending facebook just don't get it, that much is clear. I don't care if they're selling or sharing my PII or just using it as some folks have proposed for "matchmaking" with advertisers, I don't want them doing ANYTHING with my info. And if they are going to use MY info to make money, then I want a cut. Bottom line, PII should not be used for anything other than identifying a user when that specific user needs a password reset or some similar tech-support related function. If that king asshat Zuckerberg wants to make money, he should grow the fark up and go get a real job like the rest of us.

This. I am so glad I suspended mine. I need to go back and download all my photos before I delete the whole thing. I am a MUCH happier and healthier person without it. Seriously. Since dropping Facebook, I've dropped 28 lbs because I'm focusing that FB time into workout time.

Fark Facebook. I'm gettin' SEXAY!

Here lately, I've been getting spam with the names of Facebook friends in the "from" and the e-mail listed isn't theirs.

Honestly, I got tired of FB changing my personal email to a Facebook email, even though I continually changed it back to my Gmail. When they kept making my profile available to everyone, despite my privacy settings, it became too much. I said adios to Facebook and haven't looked back.
