"In 1923 there were no government benefits for immigrants except one: Freedom!" - Rick Santorum

Famine killed 7 million people during the great depression.

So why don't you go f*ck yourself.

Wow.

Frequently, when adding up the death toll of communist regimes conservatives chalk up famine deaths to communism. So by that logic we can say at least 7 million were killed during the great depression as a direct result of capitalism. This is fun!

Mitt is currently standing up for what he believes in. Mitt Romney believes in Mitt Romney as president. Thus all actions he takes and everything he says regardless if they contradict any previous statement or action are logically consistent with Mitt's core belief that he is destine to be president.

The funny thing is that when I read Romney's quote about needing an American for really big stuff, I wondered... only if a Russian has shown proof of concept?

Point taken that my post seem to be disjointed from the quote. Maybe I should explain better:
Government benefits have their necessary place. It seems quite evident to me that a government that is unwilling or unable to keep 7 million people (out of a population of ~120m) from dying from famine is utterly worthless to its citizens, no matter what sort of freedom it allows. The Depression is roughly contemporaneous to the timeframe Santorum was referring to, one which he seems to find preferable to current times.

Well, he hasn't changed the national polls much, but it seems that he's losing ground in the state polls that are more indicative of how the electoral college will go.

To be fair, he didn't win it for his potential. He simply won it for not being Bush. For the rest of the world, that was enough.

My daughter watches a cartoon starring Franklin the turtle. I didn't know if I was watching the GOP primary or a rerun where Franklin thought he did something awesome, but really just disappointed all his friends.

Good point and true. However, the Nobel Prize committee was explicit on why they gave it to him. They said it was for what he would do not for what he is done. They were basically correct (e.g., OBL, Libya and ending Iraq War).
