So, he disagrees with the Republican party, agrees with Obama and the Democrats, but still is willing to spend $100 million to defeat Obama because... why?
Just straight up racism?

I'm *puts index finger and thumb really close* this close to thinking that he has realized that his party is almost gone off the deep end.

I think that there are two things at work here.

David Koch is socially liberal. There was a time that the "traditional values" were paid only lip service by both parties. The religious, social undertones may be really really ugly to him.

Second, I think even the rich are noticing all this cutting of government does NOT help out business. First of all, Governments actually put money back into society. Second of all, business best customer is the Government.. The Austerity going on en Europe is NOT helping anything.

Raise taxes and cut defense spending? I think he must be getting senile. He showed up at the wrong convention.

This just further illustrates that just because someone has a bunch of money that doesn't mean everyone should listen to them anymore than the homeless gent orating about the evils of floride in the drinking water. Likewise while I respect the ability if many athletes and entertainers, just because the can put a ball in a hoop or sing a song rather well doesn't mean that they know how to bolster the economy or bring peace to the Middle East.

Money should not equal speech and corporations are not people,

The best way to kill someone in their sleep and leave little to no forensic evidence behind, even in the unlikely event of an investigation of what will appear to be death from natural causes such as sleep apnea, is by piping nitrogen gas (available in cylinders in most welding shops) into the room while they sleep, displacing the oxygen in the room. They will asphyxiate without their brain stem detecting anything is anomalous in their blood oxygen level.

Use this information only for good.

The GOP has achieved much for Koch, but now that the train is leaving the tracks, he's cutting loose the Far Right extremists that they previously wooed, in a shallow attempt to win elections. In the end, the GOP support for the Tea Party types has been basically lip service, the folks in power (Koch, et al) are really only interested in economic issues when it comes right down to it.

It would be great to see Koch and others like him switch sides and open their checkbooks for the Dems, while cutting off Romney and all the GOP candidates for Congress and Senate.

So how bad does it half to be when your own party's zealots begin abandoning ship because of the extremist culture in the GOP?

Also, a part of the austerity plans that nobody is talking about is tax increases. When Republicans and Libertarians talk about "austerity," they mean "cutting everything and giving more money to rich people." It's kind of sad how many poor people are okay with that.

2012-08-31 04:58:49 AM
he disagrees with the GOP's stance on gay marriage and believes the U.S. needs to consider raising taxes to balance the budget.

Anybody who thinks we don't need austerity measures is a moron.

This is not a contradiction, but most people seem to believe that it is.

He's bankrolling the GOP, funding this lavish party and has enough money to support the next 20 GOP presidential candidates. He can say what ever he wants and conservatives will still blow him six ways from Sunday.

Koch: "I support interracial, illegal immigrant, gay, interspecies marriage and raise the Capital Gains tax in order to fund these weddings"
GOP: "Thank you sir. I'd lie to withdraw another $50 million"

Well, if he really does think Obama needs to be gone, but can't trust the Republicans in power, why doesn't he put his billions towards a third party candidate?

Oh, wait...that would be socialism.

Well I see two possibilities here..
a. He's lying - the brothers have gotten a lot of bad PR lately and per gaps trying to combat that.
b. He feels the party platform doesn't really matter as he will change it one he finishes buying the party. Much like renovateing a new house.

What possible motive could an anti-gubbmint, anti-tax, Randian, money-is-speech billionaire, who has gotten a lot of negative publicity, have to suddenly change his tune, now that the GOP convention is over, the candidate nominated, and the general election begun? Gosh I wonder.

I'm sure he's totally sincere on all of it, though, and would remain so after the election.

fickle floridian: Anybody who thinks we don't need austerity measures is a moron.

Austerity measures don't work. And not even because they're bad economic policy. It's great for the lenders who have a program that intentionally puts a nation into perpetual debt so that all their money goes to them instead of the country's own people. It's what the first world has been doing to the third world for a long time. European countries with austerity are such a big deal because now it seems that instead of the first-third hierarchy, it's now free game to cannibalize countries that were previously left alone.
Austerity is basically the theft of the rich from the people.

I'm a little surprised that he gives some lip service to tax hikes, but I suspect he's ok with tax hikes on other people not oil companies, private equity firms or millionaires. He's fine with gay marriage, but more fine with stripping gays of their rights if it the person who does it gives him a him a tax cut and the right to dump toxic chemicals into the Mississippi since the free market will fix it anyway.

He stressed, though, that "I'm a big fan of the military" and said "I think we've got to preserve our military, no question about it. And I'm not exactly an expert on how much military we need, so I have to yield to [Mitt Romney's opinion].

Bad news, Dave. Romney doesn't know shiat either. He thinks setting a budget before assessing needs is a wise course, and his VP pick essentially told our Generals that they don't know what they're doing because they didn't ask for more money.

He probably knows that he can loophole his way out of any tax increases. With across the board government spending cuts, Koch Industries is bound to lose some contracts.
