(Deadspin)   I don't know what's worse about this football play: that the guy ran 58 yards in the wrong direction or that his opponents tackled him before he could score a safety (video)   (deadspin.com) divider line 28

C. The officials for not blowing the play dead. The ball is dead as soon as the kicking team recovers a muffed punt.

The bar has been set high. This could be the fail of the season right here, already.

That's Joe Beninati, who I've never heard call a football game before. I've only heard him call NHL games. I wouldn't expect him to know an obscure football rule. The refs, on the other hand...

I dunno, I don't blame 'em for wanting to watch that one play out.

I bet he gets to do a lot more running this week.

It was a muffed punt. There was never going to be a safety.

I'm only surprised the Jets weren't involved somehow.

Gulper Eel: I'm only surprised the Jets weren't involved somehow.

But then that would mean the Jets were somehow close to scoring something other than a field goal this year.

Hey, their offense can't score, but you might see a pick-6 from Revis.

He probably just did it to get on Sportscenter since that game wasn't getting too much attention otherwise.

If only someone had marshalled him in the right direction

He thinks he has scored a touchdown. He has scored a saftey.

you cannot advance a muffed punt, nothing about running a muffed punt the other way.

This is what I'm thinking. They'll let you go backwards on a muffed punt

Neither. The worst thing about this video is that it is on Deadspin. No click for you

Once the ball is touched by the punting team the play is dead as long as no one on the receiving team touches it first.

Once the ball is touched by the punting team the play is dead as long as no one on the receiving team touches it first.

This is both wrong and not the subject.

First off, the ball is not dead if the punting team touches it. It becomes 'illegal touching' and the receiving team can pick up the ball and try to advance it. The worst thing that happens at that point is the receiving team gets the ball at the spot of the touch. They can't lose possession, they can't lose field position.

Second, a muff, by definition is when the receiving team touches the ball first.. I'm not positive if the play is whistled dead on a muff if the punting team goes backwards with it, but I think the rule is you can't advance, not that you can't go backwards or advance.

On the plus side, he didn't get shot by the National Guard

There was ONE person on the field with common sense - his team-mate who ran over and grabbed him by the jersey after the play to keep him from celebrating/trash-talking and trotted him back accross the field - and you can just hear him saying "dude - you went the wrong way" as they returned to the correct sideline.

On the other plus side, they all deserved their participation trophies for the night.

Funniest play I can remember whether or not the play was dead or not.

I'm going with E. The tardmitter and whoever greenlit this crap...both who thought there was actually the possibility of a safety on that play.
