almost back-to-back two home run games. he hit one in the first tonight, then hit a 400-ft shot to dead center field.

He shouldn't have been tossed. Bucknor saw the helmet was near him and I guess figured Bryce threw it at him.

C.B. Bucknor's the worst ump in baseball.

the word is that Harper is hitting his head into his locker *before* games because ... ??? I don't know.

Or when, on Wednesday Harper showed Johnson an injury on the top of his head from bouncing around. "I don't want to know" what happened, Johnson said. "At least I know he's not tired. He's running into things."

PTI ripped him pretty good today for his consistent ranking as the worst. Also brought up that "do you think Jeter gets tossed for the same thing"

I like Bryce Harper...yeah, he lacks maturity compared to a lot of other players but he's 19 years old, he plays the game hard and honestly, he was safe on that play. I could understand if the umpire had pulled him aside and told him to watch where the helmet bounces but to eject him was a bit much...lucky for the Nats it was the 9th inning and they were winning in large part to the two homers he hit earlier in the game. For all of the flak Harper gets a lot of it is underserved...a guy hustles, wears his heart on his sleeve and people get pissed because he didn't jog to first and then jog to the dugout.

I'm with the "don't throw your helmet" crowd. Also, who cares? It was the 9th inning and the Nationals already had basically won.

I don't know if I would have called him safe, even as a Nats fan. But Bryce was clearly pissed off about missing a relatively meatball pitch. He was more mad about hitting into an out (two with the double play) than mad about the call.

After seeing it again he wasn't safe. Either way tossing him for that was pretty lame on the part of the umpire.

Shiat, Trout should be AL MVP with how he's carried that team offensively, defensively, and just how their season was going before he joined the team.

The problem here I'm assuming is that the MLB has instituted a policy where if someone throws equipment, it's an equipment violation, the umpire notes it and submits it to the league, and the player is fined. Ump may warn the player in the game. But current protocol is not to throw them up.

Bucknor(universally regarded as terrible) thought Harper was showing him up, in disagreement with the call. Harper didn't even look at him. Probably didn't even disagree with the call, was just disappointed in himself.

Only way to avoid it all together is not to throw stuff, but then again, the thing we like about Harper is the fire, right?

I hate mentioning politics in a sports thread... but it's absolutely perfect that Harper is in Washington. When he does something "meh," he's treated as if he's the f*cking devil.

What does this have to do with Philly?

2012-08-31 09:02:04 AM
Pirates fan here. I watched him go thru the minors in Hagerstown and Harrisburg. I'd have to say that I am a fan of his. He plays hard all the time and I can't count how many times I said "wow" after something he did.

I hope he keeps doing what he's doing. The maturity will come. It's fun to watch him develop. We have too many JRolls and Hanleys out there who become complacent. I don't think he'll ever be questioned for lack of hustle.

So throw a helmet, bust a bat and blow a kiss to the pitcher, it's all good.

ps. this is worst umpiring year I've seen.

Go bucs.

bleh. whatever team the nats were playing when this happened.

cb bucknor sucks, is the point of my headline. he really thinks people come to watch him work. there are others that are bad (names in this thread) but they are bad because they suck. bucknow is bad because he always finds a way to make it about him.

when schilling was with the Snakes, I recall an incident where Bucknor was working home and either ejected Schilling or or they had some words (pretty sure which one happened) because Curt kept asking for new balls. bucknor evidently felt that was showing him up, boom.

"I shouldn't have done it, but I don't like hitting into double plays," said Harper, 19. "I just need to stop getting mad and live with it. I just need to grow up in that mentality a little bit and try not to bash stuff in. I've always done it my whole life. Things need to change."
-------------------------------------------------------

When asked for a timeline when he plans to grow up, Bryce responded "That's a clown question bro."

So, you think the ump is a douchbag, who gives a fark what you think. You probably think the Cowgirls are 'merica's team and Romney has already told people what his plan is to save the middle class.

Ryan Braun is never winning an MVP again. They'll give him token Silver Sluggers, at best.

If the Buccos make the playoffs, The Cutch is almost guaranteed MVP.

I know, but the thread is dying, and I took a shot. It is unfortunate, but he will have to be satisfied with All-Stars and SSs, no matter how good his numbers will continue to be. It's shame as a Brewers fan.

//It was neat having the football and baseball MVPs in the same season. At least Rodgers will continue to rack them up.

he should win MVP, whether the Angels make the playoffs or not. I hate how people feel they must give the MVP only to a player on a team that makes the playoffs. True, the Angels have other stars, like Pujols and Trumbo and Weaver; Trout's value to them is on par with Miguel Cabrera's value to the Tigers, if not exceeds it. Better chance Cabrera gets the MVP, tho, if the Tigers make the playoffs.

Uh... not going to the postseason? The Giants are 4.5 games up on the Dodgers.

I know, I know, everyone won't shut up about how amazing the Dodgers are because they made a big trade. Maybe they should work on not having Josh Beckett as their #2 starter (if Billingsley is out.)

If Billingsley comes back, maybe they should work on not having Chad Billingsley as their #2 starter.
