Facts have a notorious liberal bias.

2012-08-30 06:21:34 PM
Why is the media hounding Romney about this? He already told them he is running a non-fact-check campaign.

2012-08-30 06:25:46 PM
Willful ignorance is much easier on the brain. Fact checkers interrupt this process, causing dissonance and great pain in the frontal cortex.

But as fact-checking has increased in the 2012 race, so has the backlash against it from the the conservative media,

That's odd. Both sides are bad, so why isn't the liberal media railing against the fact-checkers?

Obama doesn't need to deal with facts these days. All he has to say is "abortion rape birth control planned parenthood".

I've seen Rachel Maddow stick a fork in Politifact before. Specifically, she was miffed that the Dems 'Ryan will end medicare as we know it' was called pants-on-fire. I think her analysis is correct.

This is really not surprising. The GOp has for many years now been planting in their followers minds the idea that the press is unfairly biased. So getting those people to believe that these fact checkers are biased is easy. In fact, it is one of the primary reasons for the GOPs 'MSM is biased' campaign- to get the sheep to trust only what the GOP tells them.

I've also seen her complain about things called "mostly true" where they even admit that's not strictly the case if you actually, you know, read the evidence. She's not against fact checking, she's against bad fact-checking.

Actually, they do agree that it ends Medicare as we know it -- they disagree that it ends Medicare, period.

A thin line between Mostly True and Pants on Fire, it seems.

fusillade762: Facts have a notorious liberal bias.

Kind of a bizarre argument for a conservative blogger to make but these people are doing it with a straight face.

2012-08-30 08:52:50 PM
Facts are laws and policies. A simple political claim is easy to prove or disprove. But for a complex politcal claim like "This ends Medicare as we know it" or "This goes against the idea of welfare-to-work", it's much more a matter of personal judgement and anyone calling themselves a "fact-checker" should just stay away. The proper term would be "judge."

2012-08-30 08:53:03 PM
When even Fox News calls out a Republican candidate for lying, then it's tough to play the "liberal bias" card.

The collective freakout by the Democrats and the Press over this statement by Ryan shows how vulnerable Obama is this fall on his record.

"'I believe that if our government is there to support you ... this plant will be here for another hundred years.' That's what [Obama] said in 2008. Well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year. It is locked up and empty to this day. And that's how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight."

But surely nomination is not the answer!
-- I'm afraid nomination is the only answer, it is the opinion of the entire Republican Party that Mitt Romney is criminally insane!

Yep. It clearly has nothing to do with Ryan lying out his ass. Never mind that the plant Ryan mentioned was planned to shut down in June 2008 before Obama took office.

Damn that Obama and his time machine.

The plant

In 1918, General Motors bought a farm implement manufacturing plant in Janesville, a city of 60,000 near the Illinois border. Production of Chevrolets began there in 1923. Employment peaked at 7,100 in 1978, but a series of five layoffs occurred over the next 30 years.

By December 2008, when President George W. Bush authorized nearly $14 billion in loans to General Motors and Chrysler, both of which were near financial collapse, GM had already warned it might close the Janesville plant because of sagging sport-utility vehicle sales. The plant was effectively shut down on Dec. 23, 2008, when GM ceased production of SUVs there and laid off 1,200 workers. (Several dozen workers stayed on another four months to finish an order of small- to medium-duty trucks for Isuzu Motors.)

So, the plant closed while Bush was still in office, about a month before Obama was inaugurated.

So we have Obama's mouth writing a check that he wouldn't be able to cash. Why would he claim that the plant would be open for another 100 years?
Now, whether the plant is open or closed and when it closed are beyond minutiae. Not important. But Ryan put that trivial attack in his speech only because Obama made a foolish and trivial promise.

Must have been hard to get inside and produce all those medium-duty trucks in 2009 while the doors were closed. Obama made his promise before the factory was put in standby during his administration it would be open for 100 years.
