I read Swift's A Modest Proposal in high school. Our teacher had us read it without preface. Many in the class weren't astute enough to recognize it as satire. I'd imagine all those students are modern day tea party dittoheads who forward that spam mail.

well, to be fair, when their politicians tell them baldfaced lies in their primetime convention speeches, can you blame them?

Apparently not. I've had to tell people who I thought were smart that the dumb shiat they clicked on Facebook was nothing but scams and hoaxes. All it took was a simple Google search to confirm it was a hoax.

The ventromedial area of the prefrontal cortex of the brain -- a softball-sized lobe in the front of your head, just above your eyes -

A ha!!..... this explains why I'm such a cynical bastard. I hit myself in the head @ that same spot with an 8lb hammer while splitting firewood.

I knocked all the 'Gullibility' right out of me..........

Wait, so I'm *not* getting shipped off to the taxpayer-funded FEMA Gay Muslim Rape 'n' Marriage Camp the day after the election?

Guess I better unpack.

The ventromedial area of the prefrontal cortex of the brain -- a softball-sized lobe in the front of your head, just above your eyes -- appears to be responsible for allowing you to pause after hearing or reading something and consider whether it's true,

Is it the part that makes me stop and wonder how anything the size of a softball could sit "in the front of my head, just above my eyes" without actually taking up the entirety of the front of my brain? 'Cause that's big... A tennis ball, sure.. A baseball even. But a softball? That's about the size of the entire prefrontal cortex, right?

You're right, I think. The prefrontal cortex is the "thinking" part of the brain. The ventromedial lies directly behind the eyes and appears to be more the size of your fist.

One of my friends has gone off the deep end and is convinced that the end is near, Obama will start a civil war, the people on welfare will be the backbone of a new army(I find this unlikely, I am given to understand most people on welfare are the elderly or the physically lame) and video games are being used to train people for war. Stuff like that. I just humor him mostly. Arguing isn't worth my time.

Hurry folks. Bill Gates is testing out a new asynchronous Javascript and XML Internet Web script, and you know how rich multi-billionaire Bill Gates is. For a litmited time, everybody that clicks Funny on my post is guaranteed at least $5,000, but some of you will randomly receive a check in the mail for 50 times that -- yes, one million dollars!!!

Seriously, I just did it, and less than 10 minutes later the notification email arrived in my GMail and I was one of the lucky million dollar winners. It's so easy, just click the Funny button on my comment.

when my then 60 yr old brother discovered e-mail 5 years ago, we (his entire address book) was tortured with every conservative political rant, missing child alert, wildly inappropriate joke and every possible far-fetched interwebz bs story that existed.
countless attempts to get him to post addresses in the BCC: line, edit who he sent jokes to and forgodsake - plz do a little bit of verification work on the ridiculous stories that claim to be true BEFORE sending.
......
alas, nothing worked. lots of open apologies and still the same ol' stuff.
i've learned to just be entertained.

To paraphrase the response of a Republican when I linked the Florida drug-test-for-welfare results that showed the policy resulting in net losses, "the media and politics conspires to lie to me."

Even with hard evidence, they retreat into their narrative "truth." Failing that.., ItsaConspiracyTinfoilHat.jpg

Hoodwinked from birth, didn't stand a chance. Immersed into the insanity of the mind and soul numbing rites and rituals of the RC Church (as were my Moms people for god knows how many generations back) and educated to learn what my local governments public school system wanted me to think. On top of that was misconceptions galore I gleaned from my babysitter The TV and many years of clueless classmates and friends giving their input.

By the time I graduated HS a farking huge amount of what I was told life was going to be had all changed. Those black & white filmstrips from the 1950's were no longer applicable. Family life as we were shown on TV had nothing to do with reality. And every politician since before I was born lied almost every time they opened their mouths. I was Hoodwinked, baby. How about you?

/anything you want, we got it right here in the USA

You do realize that Boomers, like myself, are becoming eligible for Social Security. All of us have spent significant amounts of our life either designing, developing or playing video games, and, of course, developing system software. Most of us are perfectly capable of defending our right to get back some of the money we've paid into the system over the years. Please don't use the term 'welfare'.

Who do you think wrote the system software behind most of Nasa's projects? Who do you think wrote the BIOS for Intel and Motorola microprocessors? Embedded real-time systems?

Your friend may well have gone off the deep end, but then again....

Just kidding.

The parents I once knew to be highly educated and sharp as tacks now seem to get most of their news via chain email and forward all that crap to me. This article asplains that pretty well.

Brain damage? Not surprising.

However, I attribute it more to apathy. It's easier to believe what you've been told than to investigate, learn, and come to your own conclusions.

A lot of people have convinced themselves that ALL media, is lying to them except for FOX News, and Rush Limbaugh, who tell the unvarnished truth.

Sad, but very true. Now we have science to prove they are brain damaged.
